I’ve been thinking about joining or creating a team for a while now. I have a problem:

I honestly don’t know how good I am at this game. I’m better than average. I can win many1v1s, I don’t do silly rotations, I don’t blow major cooldowns in silly situations (like 2v1 lich forming, etc). I have a decent knowledge of each classes skills, high damage, defensive, and so on.

My problem is this: Although I think I’m decent at this game, I feel there is no easy way of judging who would be a good match for me skillwise. This is due in large part to the leaderboard system. My peak solo queue ranking was 6th, peak team queue was like 50. Have I been close to the 6th, or 50th best player in North America? Hell no.

In other games, for example, I have a rating I can trust (for the most part). If I’m playing online chess, I know that someone within a 100 rating point difference of me will be close to my skill level and most of the time we’ll have a good game. If I was going to form a “chess team” I’d just get some people close to my rating and we’d try and improve together. This same principle goes for other games with decently trustworthy MMRs.

Imagine how much easier it would be to find a group to tPvP with in HotM if you could just say “LF4M 1800-2000 MMR”. No weird percentile leaderboard system to go look people up, and wonder if they are a good player who hasn’t played a single game in ages, or a person with a jacked ranking due to playing 1 game a week, etc.

If Arenanet wants to see competitive teams forming, and sticking together, I really think that the first thing they should do is make it so people can find others of similar skill easily. And that comes through a trustworthy leaderboard/MMR system.

I think this would be a good step in the right direction, but this would only be really effective for pug groups forming up in map chat. The reason I would like to see this happen would be to show the solo q heroes who the real heroes are when they get paired up or against them in solo q. Right now, you can not tell who is good at the game and who is not. Say a team won ToL, they got their legendaries, but still nothing to show for being the best team in that tournament. As for my experience, my team got into the finals of ToG, regardless of how some of the brackets might have been easier than others, its still a huge achievement to be in the finals of a tournament, but yet the only people that can somewhat show that they qualified are the 2 teams that placed first and second with the new armor that can be mistaken for the “just about” same armor skin in the reward track. There is no titles in this game that indicate a great (excuse the automated tournament ones that are not available anymore) player, there is no ladder that indicates a great player, and there is no rewards for being a great player. SO ANET! why do we want to be a great player? Sure this question can be somewhat answered by the recent WTS tournament coming up, but that’s only for players that can go or won the tournament, even though there are many other great players deserving of that trip. Otherwise, if you can’t go because of age or scheduling issues, or did not win the WTS qualifier, there is really no in game reason to be a great player. The main reason we still have great players around is because they still believe in the spvp scene, and enjoy the combat mechanics over other games that are out atm. This has caused a void between great players, good players, and bad players. The weeklies are just a farm for Nos, Backpack, … etc… there is no competition unless backpack is on the other team against Nos. EU has been getting better lately, as in more teams, more competition, and more teams striving to reach the same level as some of the best teams EU. NA has superpug teams (a few exceptions), as in they get put together right before a tournament, it is not NA’s fault for this, its really ANETs fault for creating a very casual game that lacks up hill progression.

excuse my bad english, writing this at 2 am.
