isn’t it sad….? why play another class when u can just spam 2 or use a macro that 5-f1-1’s for ya.
None of the classes are hard it just turns out thief seems to be funner than the rest.
Hey I play a ranger, don’t be downing lol. If I’m at the top of my game, time everything perfectly and just flawless combat a thief I can sometimes get them to 75% health. Doesn’t the class sound tempting? lol
Thieves are indeed fun, I’m playing one in that screenshot, not that u can tell from that perspective. However thieves are way to easy to play atm for to much reward, and next to no risk. So why wouldn’t u play one? I always play rouge types in pretty much every RPG i play, but i feel inclined atm to play S/D as its the only melee weapon set that isn’t yet deemed overpowered and overpopulated.
Also, lmao at marcus, its so true its sad. If you run 3 traps and manage not to die to basilisk venom before it expires u can take them to 50% hp before they finally stomp u. Progress….
At least you’re honest about the class Swick unlike a lot of thief players. I played one for a bit just to see and they are very strong for not a great ton of effort.
And you watch out, if you see me coming in tournaments just consider me a easy 10 glory points lol.
Actually, that’s an interesting point Marcus. I got into a 1v1 with a thief at treb in 8v8 the other day while playing my ranger. Played well, dodged/evaded everything, kept up the pressure while he was in stealth etc, while he just spammed restealths and dodged nothing at all. I was literally 100% the entire fight, then I ran out of energy and evades right before he went down. Boom, I’m at 3k as he goes down. Had to run around the corner and wait for heal cooldown before I could stomp. That’s a pretty forgiving class. You can play like absolute kitten and still kill someone. They’re not really a problem in 5v5 though, so maybe play some 5v5.
Yeah I know what you mean. Naaaah the class isn’t unbalanced, just seems everyone is making one for some odd reason, maybe looks. /sarcasm

Because posting anecdotal screenshots means something right?
I am anti-censorship, for it doesn’t make sense to pander to a minority.
The best counter you could get has 3 thieves in it Coffeebot? Trying to deny 8vs8 is not full of thieves makes you look a little silly. :-)
They are like flies on kitten when I play my Ele. Clink clink clink clink clink clink clink.
Well, since there are a lot of 8×8 games running all the time it has a high probability to sometimes have a weird amount of single class, but in my experience its not that usual to get more thieves, its either mesmers or guardians. So while I’m here lets put some random screenshot that does not prove anything:
I would also like to post a screenshot that doesn’t prove anything :

I would also like to present you with this :

Excuse me for being blunt, but it’s sad how stupid people are on the forums. If you notice in the picture majority of the makeup are Thieves. We know sPvP is broken especially hot join. I’m sure they’re working on it, in fact I’ve heard Anet is trying to make it Moba style game play.
80 ~ Thief/Guardian
LoL Lukin – 390 26 kills – nothing wrong with that screen shot either ;-)
it’s like when factions came out and everyone in Random Arenas had Burst of Aggression, Shadow Prison Assassin where anyone can just press 123456 and win. then people got better and lol random arenas.
@ lurkin
Lemme guess
Bunker ele
Bunker guardian
Bunker bomb kit engineer
Anti bunker necro
If you arent playing a thief, you have to go tanky to survive., because any non thief glass cannon will get 1 shot by thieves. That or roll a mesmer.
I’m not trying to say that thieves aren’t FOTM or anything, I’m just saying that one or two or 500 screen shots don’t prove anything beyond your poor luck.
I had someone in my guild today claim that the team with the most thieves in it always won, so I played 5 games and won 20% of them… and my team always had more thieves than the other one.

@Velk yea I think people should take a look at what the guildwars 1 counterpart is.
Given this dude didn’t bring res to ra, and probably wasn’t the optimal build at the time and I don’t have any of my own, it’s a decent video of a sin spiking targets. While it doesn’t show what guildwars 1 pvp is about it shows what a sin could do in a few seconds.

It was for the most part a joke about the popularity of the thief class. The funny thing about my screenshot in particular is that the only other classes there are Mesmer’s and Ele’s. The other two FoTM classes. The only thing thats missing is a guardian and honestly without the block bug he prolly wouldn’t be played as much as a bunker ele/engie anyway.
Well no actually I do not play any bunker because in my opinion they are the least fun classes in any game (that does not have healers since there is nothing more boring than healing). Thief is not my main, I use it for spvp and rarely in the first map of tpvp to steal boss. My main class is necromancer, and not anti bunker, but a condition mixed with power for spvp and generic condition for tpvp (because cleansing DoTs from allies is a useful skill to have). Another random picture that proves nothing, but with a necro perspective:
P.S. I also do not think that any other “glass” build is somehow inferior to thief – you just need to avoid its primary burst by stunbreaking the basilisk venom and dodging. Also that mystical 1.5 sec is a long time to react to something, or maybe most of you have never played FPS games, where you need to react in milliseconds, not second…

I decided to jump into SPVP after spending most of my time in WvW. I was doing great for a while. Until I also realized the amount of Thieves and Mesmers around. I play every class fairly often, and run multiple builds all the time..But I really think the “Thief and Mesmer mentality”, as I’m choosing to call it. Isn’t “Lol Thief is so powerful, let’s play it.”
It’s people mentality. “Omg it Stealths and uses weapons that assassins use, I’m going to be it. Stealthstealthstealthstealth”
Or
“Oh my god, it can make clones of itself. Clonecloneclone” It’s not that they’re over powered, it’s that their mechanics can get severely annoying if you get more than 2 or 3 of the above described people on one team at one time.
I was running a scepter/focus Guardian build with some condition damage, and doing great because the other team didn’t seem to have great condition removal. But every time I got someone close to being downed, they simply stealthed away never to be seen again. And then their Assassin, err, excuse me, “Thief” friend jumped in and repeated the same stealthy approach.
So it’s not like thieves and mesmers are OP, they just appeal to the people that go “Omg I’m like a ninja” or “Clones are going to confuse people.” But then you get 4 mesmers on a team, and they all have their clones/phantasms out.
I’m not complaining that they’re OP, or whatever, but that’s generally the mentality of the people I’ve seen. The thieves I fought didn’t intelligently use their skills, (Except stealthing to run away, I suppose.) but it just got slightly annoying trying to find out where the stealthed thief went, or which of the 15 mesmers on screen is actually a player. Especially when they have have AOE stealth.
I never had a problem with a lone thief or mesmer against me, one on one, (When I’m any class.) If they beat me, they’re close to death themself a good amount of the time, so I don’t think they’re OP. They’d be just as annoying as 4 guardians with spirit weapons, or 4 charr with Warband support, or 4 greatsword warriors. What they’re doing is unintentionally forming a “Gimmick” team build, because Thieves and Mesmers are just “Cool” and appeal to a lot of people.
I was having fun for a while, but during the 5 hours I played on various servers, I didn’t fight a single engineer, Elementalist, or Guardian. And only 1 Necromancer. And 2 rangers. Literally everything else was Warrior, Thief, and Mesmer. Bad luck? Maybe. Did it kind of ruin my fun? A bit. I like SPVP, the whole pick up and play, hotjoin stuff. But I think I’m going to take a huge break from it, maybe only play with friends or my guild, because playing with tons of thief and mesmer randoms gets boring when they all run super similar builds.
I just hope it doesn’t end up like PVP in tons of other games I’ve played, where it ends up as “Assassins/rogues/stalkers/whatever they’re called” reign.

Haha this is so true!
Its not like people haven’t worked out already that a thieves burst is insane. Just look at all the threads about them with 17k-20k crits. What’s even funnier is all the people who play thieves trying to defend their class, “you should of dodged the stealthed thief! L2P!”
8v8 doesn’t have a meta. It’s just random players.
That said I agree that Thieves are a little too effective in the hands of bad players. They can get further than most with very little effort.
Hot Join is full of Thieves you say. Sounds like a great place to break faces with my Warrior. I run an S/? condition survival build. Thieves may as well holding pillows when they try to HS me down. Haven’t run into backstabbers but I imagine all they’d need is a good Fear bomb.

Good ol’ Shadow Prison. Assassins were a stupid profession to include. A class that is based around killing someone with a three second spike? Yeah, nothing can go wrong there. Flash forward a year, and they are just crappy Warriors, which themselves are not too great. You don’t put Thief, Assassin or Rogue style classes in the game if your concept of them is something that deals burst damage but is squishy. That never works, especially if there’s a stealth mechanic. Never. You never, ever balance a profession or even a single move to the attacker. “Well, you can kill this guy in one hit but if you don’t do X you might die.” It’s unfair to the defender. Attacks of consequence should always be subject to the defender. And this doesn’t mean dodging a barely telegraphed move out of stealth in a fraction of a second. Honestly. You’d think after Factions, they’d understand this a little better.

That’s pretty much the same as a backstab thief now-a-days the only difference? That game had a healing class to counter the spike….GW2? not so much.
in gw2 each class has self sufficient heal… which is why healers ware removed, as they are atrocious to play and, abominations in playstyle, forcing to look at skillbars/healthbars not enjoy the game graphicaly and in other ways.

… You still dont know that steal if used from stealth cannot continue with backstab… thief always always backstabs while beeing visible.
If you didnt see thief coming, you deserve to die, what if you dont see HB warrior charging at u, isnt that guaranteed death too, or burst engineer with granade kit huh ?
If you saw thief, you could avoid its damage(though i agree its a bit too hight atm),
just like you could avoid a warrior. Diffrence ? range at which combo is innitiated.
Thief starts at 900- range warrior can start at 600 range plus takes 1-1.5 seconds to reach target. and 1.5 seconds to dish out all damage. Diffrence is… around 1.5 seconds of time plus thief is singular hits(blind/aeagis) more effective against thief then against warrior with big number of hits.
