The grass -IS- greener ...
The thief is much more effective at lower skill levels than other classes, I’m glad you have found a class you enjoy playing and are finding success.
Thief is easy to play, so if you’re skilled, you’ll do even better.
That said, I still find them to be mostly for 8v8 farming, we rarely run with one now in 5v5 since they offer so little compared to other classes, and we typically beat any team with 2 or more thieves.
I’m really tired of people justifying the thief’s ridiculous burst potential with “oh, they’re just a low skill-floor class”.
The “low skill-floor” characters in fighting games are also far-and-away the most often played in higher echelons of tournaments. When it takes you more effort to do just a little bit better, the trade-off is simply not worth it.
Zyrusticae, a huge portion of the thieves perceived effectiveness is based on people running bad builds (largely glass cannon) in hot join. Thieves do not have the same impact in TPvP (although they are still great roamers) since they get rocked by tanky builds.
That doesn’t even matter, because glass cannon builds should still be viable and should not be hard-countered to the point where they become completely useless when a thief is on the field.
I Just think thief has more solid build to it thats more natural to use I dont think thiefs are op though.
I dont like this design that arenanet have gone for where you have to switch weapons or attunments constantly in order to play, this a deliberate design and horrible to play with as your watching your bars more than the screen and just gimmicky and requires lots of effort especially eles and their attunments, where as thiefs this is not necessary in order to get the best out and so it just feels nicer to play with in general.

But that’s just it, I hardly EVER see thieves, or at least not more than one, in the final round of the tPvP brackets I run. Not saying they aren’t there, but every team that’s ever beat my team has had no more than 1 of any class. At high end, I just don’t see any of the complaints panning out, and I while I understand how people hate on thieves, because they do in every game they are in, they simply aren’t that good at you get to higher end play, from my experience.
I could care less really if they get nerfed because I don’t play as one, but I don’t think anything severe to their damage output is justified.
I’m sure I’m wasting my breath, most of this board has made up their mind, but still, I think if you play enough 3rd round tPvP you’ll see what I mean. Thieves best real contribution to high end play is mobility, not their damage output.
I experienced it the other way round. Starting out as a thief and then falling in love with the engineer profession.
Now I play my engineer when I want to have fun and my thief when I want to secure success.
It’s possible to achieve the same results, but it feels like triple the effort on the engineer, while on my thief (venom share pet build) I don’t even have to respec to change my role and everything is just so forgiving…
On the other hand, I cannot say the same for the warrior – for me it’s even harder to play warrior than engineer, despite all the peeps claiming it would be easy mode.
It might come down to preference, playstyle and some professions (e.g. engi) suffering from bugs.

Well, I rarely encounter a team in 3rd round, that doesn’t run a thief or doesn’t run a double something (even engineers^^), so it might be just you. This is not meant to imply thief would be op or something, just that I cannot confirm your statistic.

anet said they are gonna balance around Tpvp (not spvp and NOT WVWVW)
so unless your copmlaint about pvp involves tpvp…shove it where the sun dont shine please

how does thiefs mobility not offer anything in tpvp? … shortbow 5 is so strong that thief pretty much becomes a mandatory at khylo
2 thief’s might be overkill, duoing any class seems kind of a weak spot in the meta game right now
what people do not yet have figured out is that thief isn’t the 1v1/2v2 miracle they think it is but rather the king of joining previously fair matchups, making them uneven and then drop and ultimately finish those up in a matter of seconds
and before the enemy even gets finished thief is already on it’s way to the next point

technically Tpvp and Spvp is the same thing just with a smaller setting if anything Spvp should be 5v5 because it’s more structured.

Luckily most tournament teams are running with either 2 mesmers and 2 guardians plus 1 of the other, huh. I cant even remember a game where the premade team didnt have 1 of both, while i certainly cant say the same for eles, necros and rangers. That is just as valid an observation as the OP playing a Thief and being amazed at its potential when picked up half an hour ago.
But ofcourse your personal experience will wildly differ. I wonder in what unrelated way you will downplay this. Maybe that i have bad eyesight and my eyes need to learn 2 play?

Keep seeing people “claiming” that A-net said they are going to balance the game around Spvp, yet everytime they are asked to provide the link, they do not. I have faith that A-net has more intelligence then a monkey.

You ’’MUST’’ have a tanky built guardian or warrior. You ’’MUST’’ have a mesmer the other members are a toss up just don’t bring a necro either.

the only thing i say is that just cuz something is hard to beat as a noob or as a unorganized group, doesnt exactly hold true for competetent players or coordinated groups.
now this doesnt absolve or “downplay” the possiblity that theya re simply OP in some way, its meant to show that its possible that them being OP might not be entirely true, at least not in every way these forums claim.
however i know a thief in hotjoin spvp and a thief in premade tpvp are VERY different ballgames, suddenly countering that thief is extremely viable way and there OPness seems vastly lessened.
if your seeing a lot of tpvp thieves, its probably cuz people try to apply there findings of hotjoin spvp to tpvp, not too mention that tpvp can be pugged too
They didn’t claim to balance around tpvp, in fact they specifically stated that they will not do that but rather “balance the game as a whole” meaning w^3 and pve aswell
everyone just hopes that people with a functioning brain at anet will win the argument
i wouldn’t be too certain tho, 8v8 pretty much showed there are forces at work far beyond rationality

I know they didn’t claim they are going to balance around tpvp/spvp. People just like to make stuff up and throw it around like they have some magical A-net quote in their pocket that is opposite of what 99% of the community has actually seen them state.
They did say they would balance around all 3.
