Thief Conundrum
Playing thief in ranked pvp should be bannable offence.
Playing thief in ranked pvp should be bannable offence.
That’s like saying being bad should be bannable. Ego check.
Play rogue on WoW or assassin in Blade and Soul. Problem solved.
Hi folks,
I could use some advice. I like playing thief, but don’t wanna get banned for tanking my MMR. What should I do?
Focus on decaps and helping your team get outnumbered fights. If you constantly pull players back from the enemy team to tend to a node, then the team will benefit from the reduced pressure.
Tell them that if they were serious about league rankings they would have put together their group ahead of time.
Play thief anyway and have fun.
Be amazed when you don’t get banned.

OP has a very valid point.
There are only a few players who can make thief work and chances are he’s actually hurting his team. This isn’t saying he’s a bad player just the class sucks.
Unfortunately you prolly should play a different class
The proper way to play a thief is to reroll noob.
Thief has been on the decline for a very long time(or all other classes were on the incline perhapse), they were actually quite bad even prior to the expansion but I think good players and groups were pulling them along well enough that thief seemed decent for their mobility.
For a while all classes were getting damage buffs and getting ani-burst traits, like passive procing endure pain, the rangers version of endure pain(whatever its called), necros auto shadowform, engies shrinking potion, ele’s rock form thing + like 20 other skills, guardians multiple skills, etc. so it was inevitable that thief was going to become completely obsolete at some point.
I think arena net was trying to make spvp more accessible to new players which is fine by me and most people who are 100% spvpers (we like fresh meat) however it just got out of hand, and even more odd was that they started buffing survivability in general without ever going back to address the traits for passive invulnerability so now pretty much every class hits similar to a thief, but does it with aoe or range, and has more cc and way more survivability while doing all of that, so thief really doesn’t bring much to the table and is actually kind of a liability.
In the end thief is my favorite class by far and I enjoy the play style, I have played thief pretty much exclusively from beta to now pretty much exclusively in spvp as well. If you are the same you may have to just suck it up and practice dying for 8months before its fixed. But don’t hold you breath because something will be broken with every step to make a fix unfortunately.

this situation sounds like Mesmers before Robert Gee’s trait revamp, and only few pro players were playing Mesmer and even they admitted it’s hurting the team if they play Mesmer instead of another class. The thief community used to tell Mesmers l2p, I guess they finally have a taste of their own medicine.

Mind Smack – Mesmer
Anyone who insults you over class pick is not, frankly, someone with anything to say worth listening to. If A-net listens to such people and bans you simply for playing a currently underpowered class (unlikely) then there are 2 possibilities. 1) It’s a mistake, contact their support and try to get things sorted out. 2) If that doesn’t work, A-net deserves the loss of support from another player, and you’re better off finding a less toxic environment to play in anyway.
To those of you insulting the OP for playing thief, you all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. They paid to play a game with an option of nine classes, not seven. Let them play what they like and eventually their MMR will sort out to a level they can play competitively at, UP class or no. If you hate the thought of running with a thief in your party that much, make a premade- if you want to win reliably you ought to be doing that anyway.

The problem back then we were countered while using a very specific build in a very specific game type while the thief was also using a very specific build.
After S/D was nerfed it wasn’t as nearly as bad as we all continued on about. Also it needs to be noted that while Thieves countered us our class itself could stand up to all the other meta classes.
Thieves cannot do that right now and even back then for a significant amount of time ONLY could stand up to mesmers.
So did it suck having to be baby sat by your team due to the thief hounding you? Yes, but guess what? Without that check and balance to mesmer mesmers always run rampant in the OP/Broken category.
So while it pains me to admit this…..Mesmers need a hard counter again.
Just run the Re-roll To Revenant build.
