I posted this in the Thief forum a few days ago but I feel that it would be better placed here. Right now, DH traps are flagrantly countering Thieves. A big part of this is how shadowstepping across DH traps actually triggers them, even if you’re going to the other side of them. Too often I have been blatantly wrecked and insta killed not by skill of the guards, but rather by shadowstepping ACROSS Test of Faith, just for the shadowstep pathing to think I walked through it. In the process, it triggers the traps twice and insta kills me.

This is a big problem for me and other thieves and needs to be toned downed. Shadowstepping should NOT trigger DH traps.

DH is just plan overpowered tbh, this season will have been the worst by far. Nothing will change it, they could of rebalanced the DH but chose not to.

I didn’t know this too. Guardians have been hard countering thieves since always but this is kinda too much and probably not intended. Must be the way that shadowsteps are coded and try to find a path between your initial and final point, triggering them on the way. Does it also happens with Lightning Flash from eles and Blink from mesmers?

Probably the same thing, but we don’t have to get in melee with the guardian if we have the right weapons.

all teleports do trigger them. And yes, this is frustrating. Teleport should be for example a good way to leave the trap area, but right now you do it at your own risks!

Thanks for this post. Also for the dh bow skill 5.
If you want to teleport, you are just knockdown and stay in the skill. That’s frustrating because teleport normally could leave you.

At one point I think that teleports need a counter (which isn’t another teleport) at the other hand telporters are most likely frail and are not a good matchup already against DH.

Tbh I think the whole Teleporting / Shadowstep mechanic need to be looked at. There are quite a few examples of games where teleporting works regardless of a “valid path”.

(The whole reason we teleport is to avoid the valid paths lol). But I think the coding is quite outdated and can use an upgrade

Maybe this effect was intended, maybe not. Either way, I think that it’s really frustrating and shouldn’t be the case. Especially since shadowsteps are a utility, and blowing one should be cause for escape, not cause for taking damage and/or being insta killed.

You can dodge while porting to avoid the damage, but regardless of that little trick, the damage still shouldn’t happen when you port out.

This also happens with guardian’s Ring of Warding (hammer circle wall). You get knocked down even as you port across it or out of it. It might have to do with “circular wall-type” skills. To my knowlede, this doesn’t happen if you port across linear walls like Line of warding, unsteady ground or spectral wall… thieves easily port across those walls with no problem. It’s pretty weird and pbviously unintended that you take damage or arr knocked down when porting across circular walls…

Cant’d do it while being disabled (which is the case usually due to CC spam coming from dh). It has been always a lose-lose situation: if you don’t port out – you die to aoe. If you port out – you die to multiple applications of the trap on your way.

In other seasons not everyone and their mother played DH so at least you could kind of just avoid them as thief or gank them together with other teammates but now there is like 6 DHs per match so you get no other choice but to fight them – and it is like fighting a war machine with multiple long and close range weapons, auto-detection, auto following missiles as a naked crippled man w/o any tools. Last patch Anet even took away the tiny wooden stick that naked man had – somehow they thought the crippled man is a threat with that stick to the war machine.

Why shouldn’t they though? They should be masters of traps actually lol. Oh and if we go with lore, why can’t thieves steal weapons… physically. Like literary disable weapon spells from enemy when they use steal.

Necros are not undead though, they just use undead powers. And no, you actually didn’t explain it. Because you take dmg from traps twice. Where is your explanation for it? I am guessing thieves run across the traps twice in a row for fun?

Also, lol lore: why don’t thieves steal entire gold from enemies?

Point is lore is bs and should never be used as balancing factor. So no, it doesn’t make sense that you activate traps (twice!!!!) when shs over them.

you take damage from ToF each time you cross the barrier, either by walking or by shadowstepping.

If you’re taking double damage from crossing the barrier once then you should submit a bug report

If we’re going “lore wise” then surely a thief, master of all things agile and dexterous, can hop over a one foot tall barrier or swords…

But to make my main point: who cares about lore? This is PvP, and this mechanic is unbalanced. Lore should not be apart of PvP – balance should.

Be careful what you ask for thief players as ANet will break you.

Shadowstep is not a teleport. And chances are, it never will be due to system/engine limitations to ensure the other parts of the action (i.e. Mug hits a target and does damage at the end of the action) doesn’t also break.

But that is all the game is about, They just gave that to DH for the class be in pair with other classes damage output, and if AOE the better.

I wish Anet made traps single target and alot of cleaves become single target as well, then define better aoe skills.

Theres to much damage splash in this game. meh it doesnt even help visually for who is observing the game.

what if thiefs moves so fast that they like go through solid objects?

They go through the fastest path possible why traversing physical space going from point A to point B in a straight line while avoidng DH traps.

Anet would have to answer but i imagine:

You can’t shadow step unharmed from a circular ward if you’re inside of it but you can if you’re outside of it even if it’s right in front lf you. The shadow step might try to look for a path where it’s possible to cross but if you’re surrounded by a ward then therr is no safe path to take.

Because that totally works when a DH JI and drops ToF on top of you…. or if it’s an empty point and there happens to be prepaid traps that you didn’t know about, and so on.

When playing thief it’s a gamble to enter an empty point if there are Dhs on other team if you don’t have dash and dodge onto the point

Amen brother. There’s also dragon’s maw which will cc you if you shadowstep out of it. Really wonky.

On the same note, engineer’s #2 downed skill for me only seems to activate half the time. The other half it just goes on cooldown for me.

Please fix these things ANet. Small details break the game.
