Things to look out during pvp
also, what kind of options do you use on the combat? (ie: stop autoattacking? autotargetting?) I feel like sometimes i totally have a wrong target…
Turning off auto target is a must. Melee-assist has only caused issues for me so you might want to disable that as well. Make sure team colors are at least activated for the enemy.
EDIT: And at the risk of causing a flame-fest, I’d also like to point out that venom share really isn’t a viable build in most situations.
If you want to continue play thief I suggest switching to a burst build such as this one. (copy-paste)

1) Never listen to anybody saying: “you must play this way if not you’re doing it wrong”
2) Play every profession for some time, to learn : animation, skills and trait
3) Watch youtube combo rotation guide ( mesmer-thief-warrior-engineer ), to learn what to do exactly in those situation, also watch streaming videos from tPvP
4) Try every single trait for the thief along with all possible runes , watching the buffs they give; you may the perfect build for you in this way
5) Map Awareness! Keep in mind the enemy team composition!
6) Always keep one “OH kitten” utility ready to be used, before engaging any battle and avoid 1vs2 situations if you can
7) in sPvP, always try to ress as many allies as possible, leave a capping point if you must but save your allies, you can get those pts back by killing the closest enemy..and of course the more the merrier
8) Always try to have fun! If you lose multiple times to the same profession, try to avoid it for as long as you don’t come up with a counter.
Cheers!

It’s usually a terrible idea to go for the res as a thief unless your stealth aoe is up. (and even then it’s dangerous) Even with the tankiest build possible when not moving they’re still squishier than just about any other class even if that class is using their squishiest build. With a gigantic amount of burst it’s usually easier to rally with a kill, or just hang back and provide pressure while your teammates handle it.
As for getting the point back, I’d much rather kill a back point guardian before he captures a point than res a far off ally. It can take quite a while to take that point back. If it’s just a roamer nabbing the point I agree though.
Ah, and one more thing I forgot to add before in my post targeting the OP. Use your shortbow often. Don’t ever engage anyone in melee unless you can down them quickly and safely. If it’s a team fight let your teammates handle the stomp. It’s kind of difficult to tell what your exact issue is, but this may very well be why you feel like your targeting the wrong people and constantly watching out for a doom scenario. Thief just isn’t designed to take a hit. >.> Probably a great idea to practice ledge porting with Infiltrator’s Arrow as well, it’s one of the unique advantages that make thieves awesome.
