Thoughts on Dueling
Tbh i hardly see duels in full 5v5 servers. Usually if someone is looking for duels empty servers with 2 or max 3 ppl in are the way to go. Why do you think some ppl join almost empty servers? Usually cos they wanna duel. I do it all the time when i hot join, i don’t care about glory anyway and running around taking points is just boring and quite stupid. And no, this is not sanctioned by anet, and i don’t see why it should be.
Duels are plain stupid and meaningless in guild wars…still can’t get why people are doing it, if you want to duel go metin2, in a real match noone is going to duel 1vs1 for more than let’s say 5 secs or you’re just wasting your time..

I am in a multi-realm dueling guild, we organize 1v1 and 2v2+ duels in a secluded place in a borderlands, mainly in tier 3 currently (members from CD, FA, IoJ and formerly TC)
Why do people duel? Maybe for the same reason why people like dungeons, or crafting, or capturing keeps. Its fun for them? Fighting is core part of the game and people enjoy dueling their friends on a fair match without interruptions, to test their skills or to coach them.
The game doesnt offer us a proper dueling system, so thats why you have players dueling, or coaching their friends in some sPVP maps or in our case.. in a world vs world map. People might get mad at us but sadly we dont have options, we paid for the game and we have every right to have fun just as much as you do.
Please keep an open mind and realize that people have different tastes than you do, there is no reason to think of us as “stupid”.
Cheers

Duels are important because they teach you the nuances of fighting specific classes.
For example, if you’re having trouble beating, say, Rangers in sPvP, the best way to improve as a player is to find someone that plays Ranger and duel them 50-100 times. Keep dueling until you’re winning at least half the time. Ask the person how to counter the things you’re having the most trouble with. Try out different builds to see what works and what doesn’t.
While it may be true that you don’t see a huge amount of 1v1s in actual games, the knowledge you get about how to counter specific classes from dueling makes you a much better player in team fights.

The best way to learn how to beat a certain class is playing it imo…playing a class is the best way to learn how to counter, because you can see when you are in troubles and why and use it to you advantage while playing vs it…well btw this is just my opinion, but it worked for me ^^

Without a doubt the best way to learn to counter a class is to fight it. Dueling is a GREAT way to help you get better at fighting classes. In other games, if I have problems countering 1 specific class, I just duel a competent player until my my muscle memory is where it needs to be. Calling dueling stupid may be, in fact, stupid.
Edit: your argument that the best way to learn to counter a class is by playing it is like saying the best way to learn to hit a curve ball is to become a pitcher and learn to throw the curve ball. It’s just not the best way, period.
Precisely, but people dont understand that. I dont know why people are against adding more features, the same thing happens when someone suggests a LFG tool, it would improve quality of life immensely
Blame ANET for not giving us ranked SoloQue.
ANET is hurting itself by being stubborn about this issue:
1. Ppl love to do it, it is stupid of ANET to not provide its customers mode they would love to play.
2. Having ranked 1v1 que is great (I would say necessary) piece of data for proper balancing system. Proper balancing system should start with balancing dmg on each class so that they get fair representation in top ranks (essentially you make class pay for all the perks it has via dmg tweaks). Once dmg on the class is adjusted so it is balanced in 1v1, then AOE aspects of skills and combo fields should be adjusted (diminishing returns) so that the class is blanced in 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 settings.
3. It would contribute to the popularity of the game. 1v1 matches (dm) are easy to understand/watch and they could contribute to the popularity of the game streams. Expecting people to understand 5v5 stream while ppl do not even have chance to watch and understand 1v1 of different classes is stupid (given how much stuff gets thrown around in 5v5 battle viewers are probably going ‘wtf just happened, I am turning this kitten off’).
I agree with both sides of the argument (finding a near full 5v5 server full of duelers is annoying and not having an option to duel is equally as annoying). Most of the 5v5s I join are duelers, usually its 1v1 or 2 lots of 1v1 and the others are spectating. After my 3rd attempt at getting into a 5v5 me and my friend just give up and end up dueling in the last server we got into. Then some random comes along and ganks me or him for the fun of it.
I want to test my spec specifically against a certain class or build and I can’t. To do that I have to either go into an empty server with a friend, or find that class and build in a random hot join game.
Sometimes I want to test my spec against 2 or 3 others in certain specs (e.g. 1 bunker with 1 roamer/spiker) and I can’t without doing the above. And usually if I’m hot joining its 1 v 8 not 1 v 2

After watching the live steam, I just hope that paid custom arenas are not the solution for dueling… people wont pay to duel their friends, they will continue to use spvp maps or wvwvw for it.
Please arenanet, we want to duel our friends, test builds, coach buddies. Dont put a price tag on that.
I joined a hotjoin with a low pop, I was running a glass cannon necro wells build. I saw a guy on my team losing a fight 1v1, I jump in and kill the opposition, that’s when I noticed all these other guys standing above watching. They all jump down to kill me, I killed all 4 of them. They all left the match.
I’ve noticed a lot of guilds using 5v5 servers as dueling servers. I think Anet should play off this interest and give a dedicated venue to dueling. But not just that, guilds also grab 5v5 servers to practice 2v2, and 3v3 deathmatch.
The pvp population also isn’t enough to consistently find real 5v5 pickup games if you want to play that only. People also jump out of the 5v5 rotation on Raid of the Capricorn, so you might consider allowing people to select the maps in their rotation for hotjoin. That would also give you an idea of which maps are not popular, etc.
Im not sure why Anet didn’t just let you challenge people in your party to a duel. And you 2 can fight anywhere at any time.
Or maybe they don’t want you speccing for duels and don’t want you occupied with it. The empty rooms are more than enough, and while I agree that dueling helps you learn how to beat your opponent it doesn’t mean it needs to be included. I already see too many 1v1 specced fails in games and there isn’t even a 1v1 feature. Not to mention spvp itself isn’t conducive to 1v1’s, and isn’t made to be played with the “kill or be killed” mind set. In real matches there are other options then to just die in a 1v1 situation.
most online mmorpgs are designed around team play, but that doesnt change the fact that many of us prefer to roam solo. I hate running in big groups, the zergs are boring and I feel like I dont make any difference.
People play wvwvw or spvp because they like fighting, and I can assure you that most of our memorable experiences were epic 1v1 or 1v2 or 1v3 fights.
Its okay if you are not interested in duels, its not for you but it means a big deal for many of us, I dont like PVE in this game that much but I wouldt mind if they add more dungeons.
Dueling is fine. People who are against it probably are just bitter from WoW days of being defeated in duels.
Or maybe they don’t want you speccing for duels and don’t want you occupied with it.
The problem with that outlook would be that guilds using 5v5 servers as duel servers is getting in the way of players who actually want to play 5v5.

No, no it isn’t. Go join another room.
Anet doesn’t want the nerf crys that come from 1 v 1 dueling. Just look at WvW where random 1 on 1 happens. First thing people do is come to the forums and QQ it up.
I’d like to have dueling though, I don’t care about the whiners, Anet shouldn’t either.

It’s good to hear that you find it easy to find 5v5 games, but when I’m online there aren’t many near full 10 man servers. Lots of 2/10 and 3/10, and 16 man zergs.
