After reading blog post by Jonathan Sharp i gotta admit for couple of minutes i felt extremely frustrated and disapointed. No rankings, no spectator mode, no new game modes, well altogether nothing community have been begging for. Except for one thing: private servers.

It seems many of us (and some are too young) to remember old glory days when competitive gaming was handled through IRC (“LF 5on5 mid-high!11”) and match results were posted to sites like Clanbase and they handled the rankings. (See for example: Enemy territory 2on2 ladder). Hell, Even national cups were done this way!

My question is when server renting comes available what stops us from creating our own ranking system? It seems Arenanet have put sPvP on very low priority so we as community need to step up and create our own scene.

Only thing i see we lack after renting server is possible is spectator mode. For any electronic sport its ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to have live audience.

Anyway, this was just my 50cents and sorry for crappy english. It is my third language but hopefuly point was made.

Thoughts, comments?

Näin on.

you can get a live audience Via twitch, though if you see the viewing numbers its only regulary around 400-900. if you want a good amount of viewes on a single stream you will need some solid advertising and PR before doing this, once you have done a succesfull ’’live’’ tournement then the next one will be much easier.

you could do some PR on popular sites such as mmochampion, curse, tiwtch itself, forums. and as much as people hate him, Athene is good at PR ing tournements it may be worth getting into contact with him for some advice on how he went about it for his charity scheme (which raised over $1m btw).

all in all, you need viewers thats my main point and theres variations on how to go about getting them.

ofcourse if your going this big then sites like MMOchampion/curse you would either need to persuade them to let you advertise free of charge or pay them.

ofcourse with twich comes the problem of ‘’follow X player’’ or do you take away one player from each side and you (the organiser) runs around with a char commentating. lots od details to think about, live tourneys wont be easy with GW2.

I am still trying to understand why people are crying out for the community so much when most of said mmo communities are so immature/bad that they make me tear my hair out.

No surprise that Anet is taking their time to make a good choice.

Great idea OP.

At least with custom arenas, we can do it all ourselves (although spectator at the least would be helpful here—then you don’t have to worry about getting low-res streams from some participants’ PoV).

I remember the good old’ days before competitive rankings.
It Wasn’t even that lOng ago that to play in a “league” or tournament setting you had to go outside the community anyway.

Console gamers still have to use this system anyway so NBD I guess.

Player ranking systems and tournaments are already in the works for the launch of private servers. Dragon Arena http://arena.dragonseason.com/index.php/tournaments/teams was setup before the game launched I believe, because a lot of people thought the game would launch with private servers.

I am actually much happier to have private servers first over a ladder system by arena net. With private servers teams will have a much easier time practicing with other teams, evaluating their own team members etc and I think that private ladders will sort things out decently until arena net gets one working.

I am just hoping that private servers are something that is closer to being weeks away rather than months away.
