Please stop using that as an excuse. Yes, we get it, it is not entirely about 1v1s. Rotations, good team compositions etc are all major elements that matter in pvp, but so are 1v1s.

1v1s happen more often than not, especially when contesting a node, and there has been numerous times I had to +1 a team mate because he couldn’t win a mirror matchup (or even a favourable one) on the side nodes.

I think we can all agree that a role model of having good rotations and being strong mechanically in 1v1s would be The Abjured. Which was also how they won wts (rotated to force 1v1s in their favour as orng’s lineup was heavily dependant on combo strat).

Thank you.

TLDR; 1v1s matter so if you want to improve your pvp games make sure to practice 1v1 and not just rotations. (Rotations are still very important however)

1v1 ability is just a portion of what counts and is also directly linked to raw mechanical ability and knowledge of counterplay, both of which greatly impact your team fighting capabilities as well, not just your 1v1s.

I’m probably the worst ele in the NA ESL scene when it comes to winning 1v1s (the 160-200 ping doesn’t help), but it doesn’t mean I contribute any less than other eles in the NA ESL scene.

Likewise when I play mesmer (which I do for most pugquest tournaments and I also played mesmer in round 1 of the most recent AG when we had to sub someone for that round) – I am absolutely atrocious at 1v1ing and lose 1v1s vs most players of my level, but I still get by.

Not trying to demean anyone bad at 1v1s. Bottom line is that if you’re good at 1v1 you’re more likely to perform better with your team than if you were not.

Yes, 1 v 1s matter, but every class doesn’t need to be perfectly balanced to win them to be good at PvP. The best example of this would be the thief, such as Toker in your Abjured example. He won MVP in the WTS, not by winning 1 v 1s, but by rotating to the right places and +1 at all the right times.

So let’s break down this false polarization:
1v1s are not the be all and end all determination for whether a class is OP or underpowered.

But at the same time

- 1v1s matter for PvP and are still important to winning games.

This is pretty staw mannish. I don’t know anybody who claims 1v1 has no role in spvp that has a clue. Who cares what ignorant people say they say all sorts of outlandish things.

All depend on the role.
For example I’m a Close Holder. I stay all the time in close and go in mid only if really needed and I’m shure that there’s no one that will come to steal my point.

I play Necro MM in a personal build that work really good to bunker and be a good 1vs1 build. That’s why my role is to fight and kill who come to the close and survive if more than one comes, waiting a team member to come to help.

But there’s still a member of my team focused on team fight support, that will be totally useless in 1vs1 but in team fight is the best of all.

1vs1 happen frequently but if you have 1 team member focused on that kind of fights you’re ok and there’s no need to be all focused on that, is better to be more team fight focused than 1vs1 focused.

The sPvP focus to hold poits and fight in team to do that. 1vs1 is a thing that come after the teamwork balance.

Except for thieves because Anet decided that thieves shouldn’t be able to fight any class in 1v1 (given same skill level).

1v1 matters and they also don’t matter.

A thief may not excel in 1v1, but in teamfights, they can end it as fast as soon as they appear to the fight.

D/D ele excels in 1v1. However, A second d/d ele appearing to that 1v1 fight would not do much. Their damage isn’t as bursty as thief are, so they most that a second d/d ele will add is making the objectives more defensible and eventually win the battle.
