Total Noob Question
I would go just with tournaments honestly. That’s how I learn on all of my alts, the way people play in Hotjoins you will never learn anything other than how to kill bad players.
Go to hotjoin. You will get murdered in tpvp and kitten off everyone around you. You can learn to play your class and fight others in hotjoin.

just play the braindead builds and win every single 1v1 provided the enemy isnt running the same buld

Above post provides a pretty efficient solution to your issue
Hmmm… well I have a warrior, a necro and a mesmer. I’m hoping to use each in WvW so would like to learn how to PvP with all of them. I’m not looking for facerolling braindead builds. I’m seeking to increase my own skills so that I can not only learn to survive better with my class, but also learn how to play against other classes. At the same time I would like to make the experience as positive as possible. I realize I’m going to lose a lot to begin with. I just don’t want to be subjected to name calling and threats on top of that. I’m not saying everyone is like that or going to do that. I guess I’m just afraid of that happening. Quite possibly why have stayed away from PvP thus far.
Go play some hot join and try out different builds (craft your own), all your weapon sets and different tactics. Yes, many players in hot join is awful, but you’ll get the basic idea and some training and learning from it. The best would be to find an empty server and ask a guildie or a friend if they could duel you while you test different builds and weapons.
That’s at least what I did, and it worked out pretty good for me
Just solo queue. You won’t become the best unless you play against them.

I would start in hot join and move on to solo queue. People get really kitten ed when someone who doesn’t know the profession, maps or tactics come around and screw up their stats… :/
I’d play some hotjoin before going to tournaments just to get the feel of things first. In a tourney as soon as people realize who the ‘weak links’ are, you might as well be wearing a stomp me sign.
That plus the super fast pace of tournies can make it hard to learn what other classes are doing, unless you are already familiar with other classes abilities/mechanics things can be over too quickly to understand what’s going on. At least that’s how I felt at first, back when thieves were running the ever-fantastic backstab builds at launch
I want to focus more on WvW, however, I’m terribad any time I get into small skirmishes. So, would like to work on my PvP skills.
This is why I got into PvP, and while I haven’t actually been back much to WvW, it has definitely worked in that I don’t freak out in PvP nearly as much now.
If you care about not annoying others, stick with hotjoin until you are comfortable with your classes. Both solo and team queues are now overfilled with players who have no idea what they are doing, but it’s your call if you want to contribute to that or not.
OK, thanks for the advice everyone. I notice no one advised using the training NPCs. Is there any specific reason for that?
Does the HoT join work the same way as solo/tournament? Are the maps the same?
The training NPCs are, well, NPCs. They’re pretty stupid. I sometimes use them when I am completely new to a class before going to hotjoin, but that’s about it.
Put it this way: if you can beat the NPCs it doesn’t mean anything. If you can’t beat them, you need a lot more practice.
Hot join has the same maps as solo queue. You can go into the browser and pick a match/map you want to play on, or just click the button top left and it will choose one for you.
Thanks Qaelyn!
