Toughness vs burst
What milo said.
Anet wanted offense > defense. If you want to be a tank get the soldier amulet and create a build with easy access to protection. A high armor target with protection will cut a thief’s opener from 18k (on a 2k armor no protection) to 8k (on 3k armor with protection). With soldiers amulet you should be around 20k hp. It makes you such a bad target to go on, especially for thieves which aim to kill someone in an opener and lose their strength the longer fights go on.
To complain about Thief damage and not point out the obvious flaw, they can attack you multiple times while stealthed and still in combat, is a waste of forum space.
Remove stealth while doing or receiving damage and thieves will be a class that actually requires skill to play. Currently though, a thief can dish out damage for 12/15 second while stealthed.
You are not getting 3 shotted if you had retaliation up against a burst thief
You obviously do not know how retaliation works.
It doesn’t reduce incoming damage at all.
It reflects a set amount of damage that scales on your power. So it’s pretty useless for combating several big punches like a backstab build uses.
Power double dipping isn’t a flaw… it’s a design choice.
The point of GW is FAST PACED PvP. By inhibiting healing and making toughness a remedial stat you put a timer on any given encounter. It gives value to choices made in combat.

Fast paced pvp is fine. 2 second TTK from a stealth isn’t. Sorry.
Never seen so much complaining in my life. Learn to play against each class and you’ll find something to counter them with. Opportunity cost comes with every class, especially glass cannon thieves who have 15k hp. Yes there are broken parts in the game, but you are ignorant if you think Thieves are the only class that benefit. Stop QQ’n and learn to counter.
Next example – Elementalist Tank/bunker build vs Warrior burst build:
Toughness: 2204
Armor: 3124
Health: 12305
http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/6txkpxe2/gw027.jpg
Incomming damage from a Warrior vs Elementalist bunker/tank build:
- 1x single skill – Bladetrail: ~9k dmg (900 range skill)
http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/axlln8wc/gw022.jpg
- incomming dmg from 100B: ~1200dmg each hit
As you can see the armor and toughness values are very high, HP is a bit low but this doesnt matter in this case since we will talk about incomming dmg against a tank build and the toppic is about toughness/armor values vs burst. At 50% health the used runes for this build trigger additional protection for some seconds by the way. In addition the traits at 50% health trigger Armor of Earth and at 25% another Shield, called Arcane Shield. ……didnt at all to avoid a fast death.
@The original name of the thread was “Your game is broken: toughness vs burst” and changed by admin/mod. Actually this is not just a comparison with toughness vs burst, this thread is about that the games pvp mechanic has issues.

one thing i have totally noticed is in this game high defense dosent counter high offense.
all the blast combos with the exception of the area frose armor and area healing, are pretty much offensive. all the weapon procs are offensive.
and you can raise crit chance all the way to 80% but never get any ability to reduce crit chance.
when i run out with full toughness peopel tell me, your a noob get more hp.
when i get hp they tell me “you need more toughness”
there is a power+crit and a power+ condition armor sets and talisman but you cant find a vitality+toughness or vitality+toughness+healing talisman.
I get bursted down a LOT as a guardian, and i have been a decent player in too many former pvp games just to think , well perhaps im jus a scrub and need to l2p.
the reason people are playing these glass cannon thieves and glass cannon wars is because they work. notice you dont see glass cannon necros, guardians eles running all over the place.
Know what would be funny? If Gw2 had this crazy idea to allow thieves the ability to have incredible burst. How much? Clearly enough to make a kittenLOAD of people angry and qq.
A thief’s burst has yet to majorly influence a tPvP match for me. Have I been killed in the absurdly short amount of time that everyone relentlessly complains on and on about? Too many times to count. However, I don’t complain.
To everyone complaining,
Perhaps thieves are not broken (there is nothing wrong with them). It has been stated before in this forum (I apologize i can not remember who to cite), but this is how the thief profession in Gw2 has been designed. In other words, it can not, and should not, be compared to a thief/rogue in a similar game.
The amount of whining about this dilemma is over whelming, and I’m sorry to say, but it seems like it is falling on deaf ears, and for very good reasons. The majority of players fail to acknowledge the big picture, and remain so very short sited when it comes to interpreting what this game is about.

This game has no gear advantages in SPvP unlike many other games….
I have more examples about incomming damage from Warriors vs Elementalist and high toughness, btw the incomming dmg in the first example with just a normal swing of the greatsword against 2200 toughness is impressive aswell with up to 2k+ hits…..new example:
Elementalist Tank
Toughness: 2015
Armor: 2985
Health: 13305
Incomming damage from Warrior, in this case different oponnents:
- Kill Shot: 4036 dmg
http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/u69fzcbj/tankelevswarr.jpg
- 100B : 2870 dmg (one of the single hits which were more thank 1k of course)
http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/tua4q41h/gw039.jpg
The build is of course not optimal, but I guess everyone here knows what low dmg an Elementalist tank is doing.
Tank elementalist playing without a single stun break, pretty pro, lol. This game isn’t like other MMOs where attacks instantly hit, many of the big hitting abilities hit for as much as they do because they are so easy to evade.
Pointing out only the damage they do to a target who is sitting in their attacks is only evaluating half of the equation.
Good morning Seether, these are test builds to record toughness vs incomming dmg.

Yeah and its pretty meaningless data. I run with about 2200 armor on my engi, and I got hit by a kill shot for 9k the other day. Did I complain on the forums about how much damage it did? No, I got mad at myself for getting hit by an attack that has such a long wind up and vowed to not let it happen again.
You are free to add screenshots with usefull informations. Meaningless is if you moan only and if you think eveyone shares your opinion. Lets get back to the toppic please. Thank you.
