So, I’ve discussed this with some other players, so I figured I’d go ahead and throw it here and see what people thought about it, see if it would take us anywhere. My suggestion is pretty straight forward, it’d be really cool if they allowed us to use any town cloths we’ve acquired as PvP armor as well. I think it’d just make things a little more fun. A few backing key points, if you will:

- In s/tPvP lore’s not as much of a big deal. (Which is the main reason they don’t want “town cloths” in PvE).
- It’s just fun, more options is good.
- Light/Medium armor have some terrible choices for helms in low-mid tier ranks, and it’d be nice to have some more options so we’re not forced to wear face masks and face stickers or go helmless.
- It’d increase sales on town cloths, and encourage more unique style, such as the flying helm for engineers.
- We already have blue and pink backpacks, I don’t think you have to worry about anyone looing “too ridiculous”. Not to mention the skimpy females wearing a metal bra and metal panties and calling it a day.
- I said “Please.”

Please let us have a way to wear towncloths in s/tPvP. It’d be fun, and increase sales. :}

Devs were afraid that town clothes would obscure PvP by making classes unrecognizable.

When everybody and their mother plays an Asura, nothing is visually recognizable solely based on their character model. Weapon switches are virtually invisible to the eye until abilities are actually used. Same goes with everything else — the addition of town clothes would not change the amount of ambiguity that already exists.

The coding required to make town clothes work would be significant to prevent players running around naked/unrecognisable.

What could work is if the head/hand and shoulder slots could be toggled to town clothes… like they can be made invisible currently.

This would be a great idea, unfortunate for us a-net probably wont want to do it.

This is the only screen I have from beta wearing town clothes in a match. If they didnt do it after beta then it was probably for the best. Although I’d love it if we could!

they could give you a combat armor copy when you get the town clothe version. They could just copy the model and code it as wearable armor

They could handle this a few ways mechanically. One, when you purchase, give you a skin and a town clothing. Alternatively, buying town clothing could go into your “rewards” (achievement box) allowing you to take skins as you please once you’ve bought the item. From there they’d have “Use for PVP” or “Use as Town Cloths” options, either would be easier than making town cloths somehow dynamic. (At least, I would think.)

Its not like classes sticking out REALLY matters, couple reasons why:
- You can mostly just tell class by animations
- Classes have a class symbol by their portrait.
- Achevement and gem store armor has enough that’s usable amongst all classes, to potentially look alike.
- (Look at Caed and Tany) All medium, all heavy and all light can look exactly the same, so there’s already the ability to look alike as it is.
- Half the time, mid combat, too much particle spam is even happening to really see what the enemy is wearing depending on who’s fighting.

Well lets look at it this way. The release of Jubilee Masks, Horns of the Dragon, Zephyrite Helms, Achievement Armour and Toxic Gloves/Shoulders etc has already shown Anet is willing to produce cross-armour type gear in spvp for these slots

Directly allowing the use of town clothes in PvP or any combat situation may sound trivial, but its quite a complicated problem with how the inventory and equipment are structured. That being said, a version of this isn’t off the table. The amount of work for the gain just isn’t something the PvP team has bandwidth to tackle anytime soon. Keep the suggestions coming!

Can’t someone just make “PvP Town Clothes” skins?

Hey Evan – on another note: how does ANet determine how much money tPvP is making them from the Gem Store? For example, how do they know players are buying finishers for the sake of PvP and not PvE, or skins for the sake of PvP and not PvE?

Yeah I forget sometimes there’s a PvE game too.. and you could make the same argument for head/shoulders/hands there!

Maybe with a bit of convincing they could make something we could benefit from too

Town cloths are fun for people, AND there is money to be made because there are a lot of town cloths already buyable, but doesn’t serve a good purpose. I know engineers would buy the flight-helmet and the list goes on from there. So its income for them and more fun for the players. Plus you also have to realize there are different teams that work on PvP. To add this it wouldn’t shut down the whole group of people that work on PvP. :P

Initially, one of the easiest ways to determine who to target first is by looking at their armor.

If we introduce town clothing, we’d have elementalists running around in giant hulking suits of armor and warriors running around in skimpy/provocative clothing.
People would be able to mask their class from a distance and it would cause problems in matches.
This really will be something which many people (like me) will complain about if implemented.

Maybe keep this out of the tournament system but add a setting to the custom arena which allows town clothing?

Ok, i agree but still believe there are far more important issues to attend to in PvP but if they have the man-power for the job without compromising or delaying the PvP much needed changes then sure!

Although I play an Asura Thief (everything looks terrible on an Asura for some reason… especially medium armor.) Ill keep buyng gems every now and then for a new finisher or skins.

Btw I love the new dagger skins I was gonna buy 2 of them! but after seeing an Asura with one equipped…. it is almost unnoticeable o.O’ … Obviously i didn’t buy gems for that…

Why do you hate Asuras so much?! even the racial gear looks bad…

What if town clothes overrides nakedness in spvp?

That would allow people to show off their TC helm/shoulders/gloves, AND for some of the more ‘gifted’ players to troll matches half naked as the mad king…

“Just”. People keep using that word… :P The answer is no, we can’t just make pvp town clothes. Our goals are not to split the game even more with separate equipment.

But…you’ve already done this. I don’t know the numbers off-hand, but I’d venture to guess there is already in excess of 500 weapons and armor that are PvP-only, yet share the same skin as something in PvE.

The game has approximately 2.3 metric f*tons (scientific term) of PVP weapons and armor that are all named “PVP blahblahblah”, and it’s the same skin as the stuff on the PVE side. If the goal was not to split the game “even more”, then why did the team make an entirely separate set, yet identical-looking, set of PVP weapons and armor to begin with?

Help us understand the logic here: why was it acceptable to make PVP-only versions of the last ~500 items, but not acceptable to make PVP-only versions of town clothes?

Seriously… there are far more important stuff to attend and to spend time and resources on.

But what if getting town clothes IS rewarding? Unless you mean the satisfaction of winning.

The problem is that town clothes are not rewarding at all. The PvE players very rarely use town clothes, only using them to do the daily when it is up. PvP players would have absolutely no use for townclothes.

Here are some ideas for rewards in pvp that players may actually like.

1. Finishers awarded based on things players do in ranked matches that are based on their skill level. Such as no one on your team dies during a match. You do this 5 times you get a finisher.

2. Armor Skins- Some really high level armor skins are mostly out of reach for many pvpers. Then again offering high level ones in easy ways could be bad. We’d have the same result as with ranked match armor.

3. PvE Armor Skins- do something similar that you have going on with badges and WvW to sPvP. Not the same armors of course.

4. PvE experience- I know many pvpers i talk to absolutely hate the leveling. What if we give them exp to use in PvE. We could see a huge increase in WvWers.

5. Special Emotes- anything. Most f2p games I’ve played have emotes, and they usually sell pretty decently

6. Medals- Map completion players can get a special medal next to their name. Why not take this a step further in PvP.

7. Titles- self explanatory

The key thing here is award them based on player skill level, not how long they play. So make up challenges that are not incredibly easy to do, but also don’t require you to do a ton of grinding (like with the finisher example).

I find the skins and if you could fight in town clothes take away from the fantasy realism.

I would have no problem though having this on a toggle on or toggle off basis for custom arena

But a serious hard fantasy fighting mode you should be able to look at someone and have a rough idea both what class they are and what type of that class they are in a serious fighting mode just like you would back in history for the non magical parts and in hard fantasy for the magical parts. Of course you would have to study to recognize what armor set and weapon combos do but that why I say serious for the player who wants to put study into fighting.

If your unfamiliar with term hard fantasy it similar to hard science fiction look it up.
