True MMR Hell
OK, I’ve been playing 11 hours straight and have 27 straight stompings to show for it. Kitten it, I’m staying until I can log with a win.
The matchmaking is clearly not working correctly.
A real competitive system would make it harder to win if you won and easier if you lost. ANET chooses to favor players by doing the opposite.
The problem here most likely is that you push yourself to keep playing for insane amounts of time, which doesn’t help you at all. You get more and more kittened, more and more unfocused and it’s all gonna go south even further. Take a break, take it easy. Since you apparently have a problem with one of your hands, did you consider getting one of those one-handed mouse-keyboard-hybrids? Might help you, too.
We’ve made these suggestions multiple times now. Unfortunately she seems unwilling to listen and is adamant about grinding away at PvP, in order to get the legendary backpack.
I’m actually concerned that it’s having a bad impact on her health, as she said she plays until she’s nauseous and has a headache, whilst dedicating full-time work hours to playing it.
Wrong. You want a system that will give you advantage. A system that makes it harder when you win forces you to have skill to advance.
The current system makes it easier on you when you win. That’s simply illogical.
I don’t want a system, that favours me, because it is boring (i know, what i’m talking about). I don’t mind, if it would become harder the further i progress. But it has to work in both directions. Losing games should mean losing progress, which would make it automatically easier. Losing is never rewarded in a competitive system.
The problem is, Anet tried to combine a competive system which kinda ranks players regading their skill and a grindable system, which doesn’t work out well in the end. It should be one or the other, not both, otherwise it results in the mess we currently have.
The fact that threads where people systems to change making the rewards easier even exists would be quite a culture shock to many. Some games have prestige items reserved for the truly great and that’s how it should be. Maybe give special multi colored patterned dyes for hitting legendary and different dyes for hitting different Legendary tiers? Like entry level Legendary would give electro pink and electro green tiger stripped pattern dye, Legendary Prestige 2 would give carnage orange with shadow abyss tiger pattern, (usually the best tiger colors but depends on the armor’s texture), etc.
That wasn’t the deal. The wings were allegedly for everyone.
That wasn’t the deal. The wings were allegedly for everyone.
Did they say “Everyone gets a pair of wings for entering a ranked game.”, or was it more like “Everyone can have a shot at getting the wings.”?
The wings are for everyone, they just might take longer if you’re less skilled.
You said earlier that your effort is wasted if you can’t get it done in the next season. That’s untrue. There were people who suspected that would be the case, but Arenanet devs confirmed that you’ll still be able to complete The Ascension even next year. Ticket prices for ‘last year’s’ items will likely increase, but from the sounds of it you’ve already earned enough tickets to buy all of those items now. So you can still get the Ascension, even if your only progress is going Amber > Emerald for the next three seasons.
So stop beating yourself up over it, and please please stop getting mad at other players over your own issues. Your anger management issues are likely impairing your ability to play as much as your issues with your hand. Take a deep breath, take a break, smile, congratulate the teams that beat you, and go in with a different attitude rather than crying for nerfs and demanding that systems be overhauled to suit your specific needs. You’ll get your wings, even if it takes you longer than you thought you have.
Ithilwen, I think you’re taking this joke of a game mode way too seriously.
Do like me, do your dailies with a brain dead class then move on. There’s nothing interesting in spvp anyway. Like, really nothing but frustration and aoe/cc from 2134762347862 range ( and pewpewrangers or aa rifle warriors dying to reflect).
Chopping seasoned wood is a lot better for your mental health and your e-wallet. Believe me. And craft Light of Dwayna with the money. It’s way prettier than the Ascension.
I think it’s time to just stop worrying about the wings.
Like what do you want them for practically speaking?
I finally got a win.. It cost me 38 straight losses and roughly 14 1/2 hours of game play.
The system is not working. The purpose of matchmaking is to provide fair matches. This match making is expressly designed to make unfair matches and it shows.
Why? Because I’ve been pounded so hard trying that it’s a point of principal. I started playing back in S1 in good faith. It has been hell ever since. How can I take that hard a thrashing and walk away with nothing to show for it?
I no longer believe the season has anything to do with competition. Competition requires fair matchups. But I’m not going to walk away with my tail between my legs after taking that much pounding.
If you think any of the seasons have been about fair matchmaking, I don’t know what to say. You are playing in a league where one team is stacked so that it can win before the game even starts. I’m still surprised anyone plays.
Go do overwatch or something more fun and maybe ANET will hire someone to handle the matchmaking soon.
Honestly, with the abysmal player base I think the system in place is near the best that anet can pull off, and I’m sure they know it. I’m all for people dropping leagues and losing tickets and stuff, but can we really afford that when we need people to grind up leagues, feel good about themselves, and feel a sense of progression?
We might need to tune matchmaking because these “MMR hell” posts show up more and more, and it’s obviously bothering a lot of people. We need to get people that are on maybe a 3+ loss streak to be then given an incredibly easy game with a stacked team of their own maybe.
Who cares if OP is not taking the issue into his own hands by getting better and instead blaming the game? We just need more players to play and are content with their performance. With every post like this, I’m sure hundreds of others are feeling the same and it really is justified from both sides.

Aren’t you inexperienced with warrior?
Playing the class effectively still requires proficiency.
You don’t see my jumping on scrapper so I can faceroll my way with an autoplay hammer spamming class. It’s just not gonna play out that way for me XD
Oh Ross, don’t play yourself down or the absurdness of scrapper. You could probably switch to it and roll your face across most people. I know sometimes I switch to hammer scrapper instead of power shatter mesmer and it’s a complete faceroll, then I weep salty mesmer tears for an hour.
Ithil, you can still get the wings even if it takes you more than 4 seasons so long as they keep the format, it just might be more expensive from what I heard. Needless to say I doubt you won’t get them.
No you can’t, on wiki it says available only during 2016 pvp seasons.
yes you will be able to, anet have already confimed there will be ways for people to obtain the backpack after season 4 has finished by other means
so don’t worry – it might be more expensive but you will get it after this year is over
You guy’s do realize your just as “Bad” as the Op. i would go so far as to say the Op is better. You see you are being carried by passives, and are to foolish to realize that little fact instead you claim “Skill”. kind of pathetic if you ask me.
Everybody is being carried by passives. Therefore no one is really being carried by passives.
I got outplayed, I concede defeat.

In retrospect, I can see how it might be because it sounds like I’m exaggerating and I’m pointing the finger, but this is what I believe. People shouldn’t have to go through a loss streak of 25-30 no matter how unwilling they are to improve. There should be some safety system to ensure that there is an incredibly high chance of winning a match after a loss streak.
Above all, we just need players to play the game without being discouraged so that anet can implement some better, less grindy system.

As to posting a video of my gameplay… Not a chance in the ninth circle of hell. I did that last season and got told in game that I should just go kill myself among other things.
This community told me I was garbage in game for weeks after posting a video last season… no chance folks.
I don’t blame you. It’s pretty dumb people ask for this simply because they want to abuse you and it’s literally not even a fair way of showing your strengths and/or weaknesses because it’d be one or two matches at most, which massively depends on your team as well as you, is dependant on the opposition too and not only that, you’re human and you could be having a few off moments. None of which these are taken into account by the slaters who ask for such video. They purely want to pick at you and not actually discuss the problem as it stands.
As for match making this season, I’ve personally found it to be slightly better. Last season I didn’t find my feet until I hit Ruby and I went on a crazy winning streak while sadly my husband was stuck at a 20+ loss rate in Sapphire which didn’t make it fun for him at all, nor competitive. I have previously said that I was hellishly grinding at a 50/50 win/loss ratio for ever (it seemed) and then all of a sudden, I was winning and it didn’t stop until almost the end of Ruby. Did I suddenly get better? Or, was it matchmaking luck?
I also agree with you that it has been shown that one team will always have the advantage in the initial algorithm set up and I agree that this is unfair regardless of how well you consider yourself to be as a player.

I don’t think it’s really possible for them to put a feature in to do that, other than to just give you an automatic win for losing. I think the only way they could really do something about keeping less skilled players from constant losing streaks, is if there were a 15v15, objective based mode or something. This isn’t a thought out idea or anything, just a random example.
5v5 requires every team member to pull their weight, but larger teams could mean you can get away with a couple of less skilled players on your team.
I don’t think GW2 has been designed for that to work too well though. The closest thing we have to that, is WvW. Not to mention the playerbase in PvP is probably way too small now, to be seperating people into even more game modes.

Were the responses to your video posts honest or vicious? If honest and they said you was terrible then i would take those comments and advice.
Yes ANET has said one side is favored over the other but they also said the difference is a lot smaller than last season so the weaker team can pull off a win.
From what i remember you have been a mesmer main for a long time now and played Mesmer in Season 1 when it was OP and in season 2 when it was OP and yet every post of yours has been complaints about you losing game after game.
It seems really hard to believe that a person with your amount of experience on what was arguably one of the most OP classes in S1 and S2 is having this much “bad luck”
No doubt some people may have just said rude things, but she did receive a lot of good feedback on where she’s going wrong. For instance, a lot of us pointed out how she hesitates too much when deciding where to go, doesen’t use skills like Portal, which could easily allow quick travel between two points, or disengaging easier etc.
The number one biggest weakness we saw from the footage, was that she clicks on her skills to use them and sometimes had a habit of turning her character with the keys, instead of moving the mouse to quickly look around. She claimed that she clicks on skills, because she can’t use her left hand well, because of an injury and can’t press buttons fast enough because of it.
Taking all this into account, playing Mesmer will be causing her to lose games, or require her to be carried by her team mates. This is why I’ve suggested her using a more sustainable class, like Engi instead of something that requires you to be very dexterous.
Okay this is interesting. I too click on 6-0 skills because I have a rare skin disorder (Epidermolysis Bullosa) which makes my hands scarred and over considerable time have formed mittens (basically playing with two fists). Although my situation will be massively different, I wouldn’t suggest playing engineer, because that can be very button-mashy and trying to reach for F5 is pretty difficult at the best of times, but is made much worse if the OP is going to be mouse clicking (luckily I click all my function keys 99% of the time with my left hand; still not the same as mouse buttons using an MMO mouse, but much better).
Perhaps the way I play may also help the OP. After first playing the game, I struggled very much with moving and fighting. Once I realized I could move my character by holding down my two mouse keys, a new world opened up to me.
Now I mainly use the mouse for movement (alternating between WASD when I can and when necessary), and most of the time skills 6-0. In PvP when things get really hectic, this can alter but if you get used to it, you can play and I guarantee none of you would know you’re playing me unless you knew me and that’s not me being up myself or saying I’m the best player in the world, because I’m not, but not one person has ever commented on slow skills or slow reaction or weird movements.
I did get to almost the end of Ruby last season playing D/F elementalist (auramancer). I am used to ele anyway but I really really enjoy playing this in PvP and most of my success this season comes from playing auramancer ele.
I do hope this helps in some way.
[edit] Though my query from last season still stands: why the majority of team mates fail to do the most simplest of tasks during a PvP match, for example communicate, call target, rotate properly, look behind them (for example, one match recently I was capping tranquility and an ally came to watch over me, completely failed to notice enemies coming in behind her even though I targeted them and we didn’t get the cap. There are some even SIMPLER rules and obvious choices people fail to do during a PvP match and it quite literally baffles me how they are even there.

It sounds like you could probably be one of the most helpful to Ithilwen, given that you’re having to deal with a disadvantage too (sorry to hear about your condition by the way). Do you find playing Ele to be comfortable? I don’t think ithilwen has tried playing it.
Also you’re right, team mates do make some really daft decisions. The amount of times I’ve seen people follow another team mate to close at start, or just running into a 3v1 is mind blowing at times. Also found those charming folk, that don’t communicate at any point before (after you’ve initiated a team convo) or during a game, seemingly in their own little world, to only then insult the team at the end of the game before leaving. But I digress.
Ithilwen is very attached to Mesmer. She tried Warrior earlier, but I’m not sure if she’s switched back to Mesmer. I’m not sure how much joy she’ll find sticking with Mesmer in PvP. Would you recommend she tries D/F Ele?
Best part of PvP for me is turning it off. In the beginning, it was like they said 50/50 algorithm. Now its season 2 all over again. I know I’m not great. Scrubs cant teach scrubs to git gud, can they? I mean, when do see the Yankees play against the Woodchucks over and over and over again. Personally get rid of ranked and let the pros have their own tournament. I will claw my way to ruby and won’t do this again the next year. Lesson learned.
@Ithilwen
You cant really blame the mmr when youre such a weak player due to your arm/hand. In every season, you bring up thread after thread about mmr hell, when in fact you arent in mmr hell. The game is created in the way that you need 2 functional arms/hands to play it, it doesnt consider damaged arms/hands. It probably works well for you in pve but pvp is alot different. I think you just have to realise that theres no way for anet or mm to make it better for you under your circumstances. Also…try scrapper, why even try warrior with your arm/hand, its a real bad choice. Go scrapper that have one skill bar basically with alot of sustain. The class can carry you a tiny bit but dont expect wonders.
This is the rudest most insensitive ignorant statement ever. Google Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa and then come back with the same statement: “[I] need two functional arms/hands to play”. I play perfectly fine, probably better than average. The OPs ability to play and be good at PvP has nothing to do with her disability on the whole. You also need a brain and it seems most PvPers don’t have one of those including you. Utter nonsense.
Besides, there are countless people with even worse disabilities than me and they play with adaptations such as foot pedals, voice commands and so on. Don’t be so absent minded. I am utterly disgusted with your ignorance.

Thank you, this is light relief from the post I just read (and responded to!). Yes, I find ele very comfortable to be honest since Tempest came in and auramancer became a meta build. I wouldn’t have so easily achieved Champ Magus without it (all achieved last Season). Before auramancer I literally didn’t like how ele felt in PvP, in so far as I could mash buttons and win a fight but have zero idea what I did, or what the opponent did. I like to know what I am doing. I feel a real help to the team in my heals on attunement swaps and “Wash The Pain Away”. The combo fields are easy to learn (unlike the gazillion the scrapper has: and I felt very comfy with Scrapper until the changes to slick shoes).
The only thing is when you get team mates who don’t understand how the auramancer helps them, or what the auramancer should be doing: for example I have to be always on the move, this means little in the way of stomps (better to cc, help the stomper), fairly high on rezzes when able to. If the team mates don’t fully understand my build it can go pretty wrong. I always tell them what I am and my strengths before the game starts and if they don’t listen, well, what can I do?
But, with only 4 function skills (albeit you’re changing all the time), I still think, with the ability to stay alive, auramancer could be a good one to try. But it all depends on her disability and to what degree. For example I am lucky in that I don’t have to look at the keyboard to find my function skills, and I have gotten very quick and used to the way I maneouvre my character and set off skills: to the degree that I can stay alive on point against 4 until my dead team mates come back (obviously dependant on quality and dps of opposition!).
Also you’re right, team mates do make some really daft decisions. The amount of times I’ve seen people follow another team mate to close at start, or just running into a 3v1 is mind blowing at times. Sadly, I am unsure what input I can give here. Warrior bores me really (although this isn’t to say you don’t need skill and an understanding of PvP, rotations, counters, etc etc) but, I would say Warrior is one of the most simplest to play, but it may not suit her playstyle.
I recommend she tries anything really and if she wants to try D/F ele, she is more than welcome to PM me for some advice on combos, when to disengage and how etc. Like I said I don’t claim to be the best player in the world, but I do feel most comfortable with ele and I think I am strongest at this class.

Ithilwen why don’t you try a 1 v 1 vs a legendary player to see if its really matchmaking that boosted them lol.
This wouldn’t prove anything. Firstly, PvP is a team game, secondly, who out of legendary do you choose? The one that’s been carried by premades of 4, or the one that is extraordinarily good? Third you clearly miss her point in that this will clearly be unbalanced and this is what she is saying; that the match making is unbalanced and you’re put against an unfair advantage. So a 1v1 wouldn’t display anything.
This is actually one of the biggest problems in PvP. People are so blind to what is happening across the map. They’re just interested in winning their 1v1s, often off point, not giving two hoots to the fact the enemy has all 3 points and your team is dead. Until people accept its a team effort and act accordingly, solo PvP is a gamble.
Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. But don’t waste forum space adding stupid comments like this.

It shows the disgusting difference in skill Ithilwen has with an upper division player. She has been making threads throughout the seasons about how she is stuck because “MMR HELL!!!!” and how the game favors certain players, then she finally posted a video of her playing and its as bad as you can imagine. I very well know the game is not balanced on 1 v 1, but it will clearly show the skill gap. Anything in a 5 v 5 would just result in “ahhh my team was so bad why can’t I grind out games oh woe is me.”

That’s very kind of you Celine. Ok Ithilwen, how about trying out Tempest and use the D/F Aura Share build. Celine’s offered to give you some pointers on it, if you message her in-game.
You might find more success with Ele/Tempest, as it might be less awkward for you to play. Try it out and see how things go.
In any situation where there is a winner and a loser this is going to happen.
If matchmaking was fair and balanced players would be matched into matches against those of a similar level where they have an even chance of winning. Clearly if such long losing sequences are happening this is not the case with the system. I would say given the population issues that the best system is the S1 system.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro

This.
I’m having a 10 loss streak since today and lost 2 tiers in Ruby. MMR is awfull and so is ANET at fixing things.

It still doesn’t mean much though imo, because PvP is a team game and 1v1s don’t count for all the other things you need to focus on in a PvP match. It’ll show whether she can beat whoever in this 1v1 but that doesn’t really display what is happening in a match.

Yeh, I’d be more than happy to. @Ithilwen, just message me if you read this and fancy having a look at the auramancer. I know it may not be what you want to do, but the offer is there. Plus any tips on key-binds or ways to maveouvre your character too, I’d be more than willing to share.
Believe me… taping my hand to my mouse so I could achieve the Halloween jumping puzzle for me and my husband (LOL) I can definitely hope to offer ways around things :P

I’ll queue with you anytime you like. I’ve already gotten the wings and have an alt that I run a mean LB ranger on. With a little planning and practice I bet we could break your slump and boost that MMR. Invite me in game anytime you like. I am very competitive, but just play for fun, so don’t worry about losses or anything.

OP make a thread talking about how broken the MMR system is (something which has been discussed in dozens of posts) and gets attacked for having a disability. This is everything wrong with the PVP community. The number of “get good” post is just sad.
ITT: Proof that people get kitten about everything these days.
Yes, it sucks for Ithilwen that they have this disability and no one should suffer from such a thing, but as has been mentioned, most video games, especially MMOs, are built around having two hands. Try setting your controls up in a way that you only need one hand and can play as well as with two hands. Good luck, you’ll need it. It simply isn’t even possible for anet to cater towards their disability and as much as it sucks for them, they’ll have to accept this. And obviously, pushing yourself to do 11h+ marathons of GW2 PVP just to get a single win so desperately surely can’t be good for your health either.
Uhmmm just wanna ask:
So why wont you “get good” bandwagon people help the OP get her wings? You are skilled players right? I am sure you can carry her.
@OP
I for one am willing to help you get the wings, only If I am on though give me a msg, Really busy recently so I apologize if you do not see me OL frequently
Before this topic gets too derailed…
I think every rational individual can unanimously agree that the disabled are placed in very unfortunate circumstances that are beyond our understanding, and do require our support. I can’t imagine what these people have to go through each day, when life can be…so difficult in so many other ways.
On the other hand, it’s wrong to call out people and state that they are terrible human beings for pointing out that a disabled individual might have difficulty playing the game or should strive to improve. Especially when people have zero knowledge of the OP’s circumstances. Yes, it’s true that we should always consider the possibly extenuating conditions of a person behind the computer screen, but having a disability that will directly affect gw2 is very rare and something that we don’t assume online as compared to real life, because in real life such disabilities are usually made very visible or clear so that we can accommodate.
So, on behalf of people in this thread, please accept any apologies for any posts that may seem to have malice against you. On the other hand, please understand that we do not know of your condition, and guild wars 2 is a game that is optimally played with 2 hands. Playing too excessively long is unhealthy as well.
The best we can do is support you, but neither you or anyone else should feel entitled to do so. Feel free to add me if you want and we could que together (Aeroxe.8140). I’m on NA and have played in the competitive scene including esl proleague for quite some time. Best of luck.

What’s the point? We all know she is disabled, how come you guys expect more from her? why not just support her or team up with her?
You guys are should have a more understandable persona esp with people in need.
You are skilled right? (atleast that’s what I would like to think) I bet you can carry her? or maybe not?
You know, people charge for carrying. If she wants a carry, what is she willing to offer in return? I’m not a charity.
I typically admire the stoic types more, I’m more willing to help those who help themselves. I might be more sympathetic if she didn’t already have a reputation of being abusive towards her own teammates and enemies.
Which is apparently ok, because she’s disabled. So she gets a free pass when she’s rude, but other people aren’t allowed to be rude back.

It’s fair to point out things like this because if not, there’s no way to see what went wrong and comment on how to do it better. For example

Why stay to cap the point if you’re going to abandon it anyway? Then not watch the map for swords to which a person could have returned to hold the point. Of course if you didnt care to hold it, you shouldn’t have wasted time capping it in the first place.
This goes to the core of rotations and asking where you should be, and what you should be doing during a match. Simple things like these are the difference between winning and loosing a match. They’ll even cost you the game if hardcore pvp’rs have set out to carry said person to get their backpiece XD
Can we all just carry Ithilwen? Sure. That doesnt mean you can’t point out some simple things for him to think about while playing (some of us have PvP’d with Ithilwen back in the OMFG all mes team days too, btw ;D )

The h? really charge? WOW. as if you guys are really THAT GOOD?
dude, are you disabled? If not, its best to understand why she is rude or anything. You will never understand that if you are or were never disabled in your life.
Coming from the health field here, you have no idea why people with illnesses act rude or whatever. It is hard to be in their shoes.
So you people without disabilities should be the bigger persons here. Is that really hard to do?

No no, it’s ok to be rude in private, doing it out in the open is asking for an infraction.
The trick is to not be baited.

Also, don’t be ableist and assume everyone you meet over the internet is neurotypical for start. People who are differently-abled shouldn’t be held to lesser societal standards than anyone else.

Technically, Stickers, Vickey is disabled for all you (or they) know, and perhaps their lashing out at this other so called disabled person is just their disability.
So if deep down we’re all really disabled, shouldn’t we all be free to act out and be rude as much as we want?
As the old saying goes, what’s good for the goose, is good for the gander :D

the best way is to team up with her on TS, and teach her from there. Nothing is gonna progress from these technicalities.
