True MMR Hell
In any situation where there is a winner and a loser this is going to happen.
If matchmaking was fair and balanced players would be matched into matches against those of a similar level where they have an even chance of winning. Clearly if such long losing sequences are happening this is not the case with the system. I would say given the population issues that the best system is the S1 system.
This.
I’m having a 10 loss streak since today and lost 2 tiers in Ruby. MMR is awfull and so is ANET at fixing things.
It’s the safety nets. If you’re having that tough of a time then you don’t belong in that division.
This may be true on some level, but not really in GW2 given how each MMR is to some extent separated from one-another. Low MMR legendary exists in a completely different world than high MMR legendary. A play that wins 95% of their games on the way to Legendary will likely never face a player that wins 40% of their games to Legendary, and a player that wins 60% of their games should ideally never play with either.
Don’t get me wrong – Ruby is currently an absolute hellhole thanks to the complete lack of skill necessary to get there. Putting together a handful of winstreaks throughout the season only takes volume, not skill. Pure luck will eventually get a character to Ruby.
The problem is when the following happens:
Player A is roughly a “3” on a scale of 1-10 in skill, but has been carried to Ruby through luck or volume due to the lack of tier loss. Player B is roughly a “6,” and player C is an “8.”
All three are in Ruby, where there are no more safety nets, and due to a relative lack of people within their individual pip ranges, the acceptable MMR spread widens. What this means is that the 3, the 6 and the 8 all end up in the same game.
However, on pure happenstance, the game also matches two 4’s, one 5, and two more 6’s, a 7 and an 8 in the game. After team placement, the teams are as follows:
3, 4, 4, 5, 6 against 6, 6, 7, 8, 8. The matchmaking algorithm weights the team like this intentionally (for some reason) to intentionally benefit the better players that have higher MMR, so as to increase their arbitrary ranking. Now, Player B, who is a 6 and is arguably better than average, can either be randomly placed on either team. However, looking at the skill levels, it’s pretty easy to see which team will win from the very beginning. That means that despite Player B being above average, he will undoubted lose this game purely based on what team the system randomly places him on.
In reality, most games are sorted closer to 4, 4, kitten against 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, but the same problem exists – the average player within that game can either randomly win or lose, while the lower MMR player will almost certainly lose the majority of their games purely by design, and the higher MMR player will win most of their games, again by design.
Evidence of this has flooded this forum since the beginning of the season. Ithilwen is likely on the low-end of the skill spectrum (no offense), which increases his chances of being placed on the losing team, as 1’s and 2’s simply don’t get placed on the higher teams. Meanwhile, people with extremely high MMR’s will almost always be placed on the HIGHER level team. This is only problematic at the extremes, as the 1’s and 2’s and 9’s and 10’s are at the edges of the bell curve. However, the 3’s and 8’s will still see substantial failures or successes purely based on chance.
People are assuming that the current system attempts to push you towards a 50% win/loss ratio, where this is simply untrue. It will push the AVERAGE player towards 50/50. The 4’s, the 5’s and the 6’s will see close to 50% ratios, but the extremes will see the extreme ratios, because the system is designed to place them on specific teams.
Tell me – how does a person reasonably raise their MMR if 75% or more of their games have them on the team that is supposed to lose? How do you string together wins to increase your MMR when your ENTIRE TEAM is worse than the other teams WORST PLAYER?
Unfortunately, Anet didn’t want to make the teams even this season, in ANY respect. In season 1, the average would be the same on each team, even if one team had four 9’s and a 1 against 5 7’s. In season 3, one team is loaded up with the 5 best players by design, and the game is often decided before it even begins. Sure, the games may not be the 500-100 blowouts of Season 2 (just kidding, they still usually are), but that doesn’t make them competitive.
Anet erroneously believes that the score at the end of the game is indicative of how close a match is, or how enjoyable it was. I’ve seen numerous games end this season at 500-400, or 500-350 that were in reality a MASSIVE blowout that was decided extremely early on. Remember, a 500-250 game can be achieved by a team holding two points all game and merely allowing the other team to hold their lone point uncontested all game – and that’s without taking points from kills or lords into account.
The largest blowouts ALWAYS occur on maps where the primary method of scoring is capture points (Kyhlo, Foefire), where the closer maps are almost always on Niflhel or Temple, which have point-burst mechanics to close gaps.
A better team on the right map will almost always steamroll their opponents into a humiliating defeat. A better team on a more ebb-and-flow friendly map will still typically win but with a smaller margin – NOT because it was a better game, but because the map mechanics allow for points to be scored through alternate means. You don’t have to kill a player to get 25 points from Svanir.
This season offers games no more competitive than those in season 2, just with less “blowouts” purely on a score basis. This season offers teams no more evenly matched than season 1 or 2, and instead favors one side by design.
I’m sorry, but literally every aspect of the season 3 algorithm has been an utter failure. The absolute average player sits on a 50/50 win ratio and makes no progress. The high-end player wins 90% of his games because the teams are stacked in his favor, meaning he progresses extremely quickly. The low-end player loses the majority of his games to players that clearly outclass him with little possibility of netting consecutive wins, let alone streaks.
And the 4’s and the 6’s? They just have zero control over their fates. The 6’s will usually win, but will still have too many games where they can do nothing. The 4’s will usually lose, but will still have the occasional game where they go up against the 1’s and 2’s and absolutely dominate – but still can’t progress in the long run.
This rant is going nowhere, and nobody that needs to listen will.
Yeah I know how he describes himself.
Yeah being on TS and playing matches is a great way to teach things. It’s not the only way though!
What? I’m confused now. Isn’t Ithilwen a girl? Do you know them IRL? Not trying to sound condescending or anything, that’s a genuine question lol.
Anyway, perhaps Ithilwen’s found some success with the Ele/Tempest aura share build. I think that class and setup might work out better for Ithilwen, rather than Mesmer.
The frustrating thing is getting a insane streak and breaking into ruby super fast getting halfway and getting trapped with halfwits. I was t3 ruby and now i cant win a game to save my life. Not for lack of trying. Here’s what put me over the edge today, 3 matches 3 revs, 3 thieves, and then 3 rangers……wtf. if i manage to get on a streak despite all that i get fed to ppl in diamond….i had a match vs a diamond premade in ruby…. mind u one of them was Caed which if anyone keeps up with pro league hes competed in. We won the game but it wasnt easy and i cant help but think we werent supposed to. In my mind i should already have been in diamond and probably close to legy now but nope stuck in t1 ruby. This is frustrating. I just want to both have fun, and get rewarded of which im getting neither.
Fact of the matter is, mmos and high speed combat games such as GW2’s system aren’t and will never be balanced around players with inherent disabilities, might sound harsh but that’s just how it is.
Until GW2 turns into a turn based combat system like pokemon, Itilwen will continue to struggle in pvp until her condition gets better.
Fact you are a terrible human being.
He wasn’t even throwing insults. He pretty much stated the facts. The game assumes that u are not onehanded. Simply taking a look at the very basic control setup confirms this.
There is nothing wrong with a game beginning with a standard the developers decide on. If it caters to litterally everybody else with some kind of handicapit becomes a mekitteniwhen is unlucky, But the thing is she is ’’nerfed’’ in her own sense. the fact she even kittening got to saphire onehanded is admirable. The fact she actualy beats some players while playing with one hand bassically is pretty kittening incredible. She does what us players use as smack talk: ie ‘’I can beat you with one hand tied to my back.’’
She does it appearantly. And that is as far as one can go. She made it to saphire with a handicap. And that is something she has to accept. But to have the game cater to somebody who is pretty much not equipped to play the game litterally is simply asking too much. While A-net has thier duties to Ensure to make gameplay enjoyable. It’s also our responsibility as humans cabapable of rational tought and desicion making to accept the consequences. But not only does she seemingly not accept the consequences she even refuses to take advice and make the adjustments.
Or to even take a break. Knowing the stress it causes her. She continues on. Unwilling to accept advice. Like how can u complain about a matchmaking system that simply doesn’t account for onehanded players? It’s akin to a blind person getting angry that he can’t get make it to the top 100 leaderboard in a shooter. It’s absurd.
The customer isn’t Always the Queen in this case. Rather Both are Kings and Queens. We however are lannisters finnancially supporting robert baratheon.
So you are upset that Ithelwen won’t take your sage advice on internet gaming forums? And this somehow makes it ok to slander and dehumanize them because they refuse to bend to your opinion? Sad.
Darknicrofia.2604, has gone out of his way to drag Ithelwen into unrelated posts trying to publicly slander this individual because apparently his feelings were hurt by her posts. It is sad how many come to be apologists for such sleazy behavior. You seem to be awfully bothered by someone having a different opinion than you, it reeks of insecurity. Get some self esteem and some dignity, getting this emotional because someone has a different opinion than you in a videogame forum isn’t healthy as you seem to care so much about. Perhaps take some of your own advice and take a break before getting blinded by your hurt feelings.
Give me a break man. You simply show again how some posters here do not bother to read. No I simply reffered to Dark’s post about how the game simply isn’t build around people with her handicap. It’s a fact and I agree with it. However if u want argue that that in itself is akin to me condoning insulting other posters. Then you should take a good look at yourself. It shows how fragile your mind is. Why the hell should I care about wheter she took my advice or not? It’s as you said an internet gaming forums. U do like to go all pseudo Freud on me eh? Please don’t because u couldn’t be more wrong.
A game simply cannot cater to everybody and thier handicaps. They’re will Always be a demographic left out. Hence the different genres, difficulties and game system(which will affect controle settings). She with her handicap decided to play this game, atleast accept the consequences. She’s also partly responsiable for this fiasco.
Blame the victim mentality, good one. I stand by my statement, you are a crappy human being if you think it’s ok to slander an individual because they disagree with you on a videogame forum. Grow up and stop acting like a toddler that didn’t get his way.
It shows the disgusting difference in skill Ithilwen has with an upper division player. She has been making threads throughout the seasons about how she is stuck because “MMR HELL!!!!” and how the game favors certain players, then she finally posted a video of her playing and its as bad as you can imagine. I very well know the game is not balanced on 1 v 1, but it will clearly show the skill gap. Anything in a 5 v 5 would just result in “ahhh my team was so bad why can’t I grind out games oh woe is me.”
It still doesn’t mean much though imo, because PvP is a team game and 1v1s don’t count for all the other things you need to focus on in a PvP match. It’ll show whether she can beat whoever in this 1v1 but that doesn’t really display what is happening in a match.

What’s the point? We all know she is disabled, how come you guys expect more from her? why not just support her or team up with her?
You guys are should have a more understandable persona esp with people in need.
You are skilled right? (atleast that’s what I would like to think) I bet you can carry her? or maybe not?
I was literally just asked to provide the video. Whoever can carry that is truly Legendary.

You know, people charge for carrying. If she wants a carry, what is she willing to offer in return? I’m not a charity.
I typically admire the stoic types more, I’m more willing to help those who help themselves. I might be more sympathetic if she didn’t already have a reputation of being abusive towards her own teammates and enemies.
Which is apparently ok, because she’s disabled. So she gets a free pass when she’s rude, but other people aren’t allowed to be rude back.
The h? really charge? WOW. as if you guys are really THAT GOOD?
dude, are you disabled? If not, its best to understand why she is rude or anything. You will never understand that if you are or were never disabled in your life.
Coming from the health field here, you have no idea why people with illnesses act rude or whatever. It is hard to be in their shoes.
So you people without disabilities should be the bigger persons here. Is that really hard to do?
Also, don’t be ableist and assume everyone you meet over the internet is neurotypical for start. People who are differently-abled shouldn’t be held to lesser societal standards than anyone else.
We are not holding them to different social standards, Ithilwen posted her opinions on the MMR system, that is all. People didn’t agree with her so decided that her posts made them insecure and felt the need to make comments about how bad she is in posts she is not even posting in, and therefore has no avenue to defend. This is just vicious and sad, the fact you condone it and try and make profit off it is just sad.

I expect far, far more from a player who wants to get the wings so badly.
Why would skilled players carry her? We aren’t under any obligation to, and if anything, she should be dropping, not climbing.

Thanks, will watch it now and try to offer any support I can with what little knowledge I have of Ilthiwen’s disability and taking my own into account.
It does strike me as a shame though if people saying she abuses team members is true. Yes we all get peed off from time to time but being rude most certainly won’t help her circumstances and or team morale. But, I’ve no evidence she does this (yet) aside from forum members telling me so.
I also agree that people do have to have a sense of perspective. Getting to the end of Ruby last season made me feel pretty awesome. To even get to rank 80 in PvP last year felt awesome because I know how bad it was for me trying to play PvE when I first started… 3 day jumping puzzle anyone? LOL… BUT when I figured out my keybinds and the ways in which I could move my character and do skills at the same time life got a lot more easy and a heck of a lot more fun.
I am competitive in PvP and I’d love to get to legendary, but if I got to Diamond and felt that was my cap because of my disability, ye, it sucks, but its life. However, I don’t know this is the case yet and I’m not sure how I could tell properly, but let’s see.

Okay, watched the video footage. I’m not going to comment on actual play of either mesmer or PvP because people have already offered constructive criticism.
What I noticed was a lot of camera movements, which by and large must be to do with her disability and massive credit to her a) not dying, and b) getting to Sapphire!
If I may add a couple of tips using my own playstyle taking my own disability into account. Remember I am playing with 2 fists (not one hand so still completely different).
1) I think it would help if she set a keybind for ‘nearest target’, I have mine set to “C” and I click it to select a target, ctrl U to call target, T to take target and TAB to go through targets (so if there’s a minion necro, I’d click C and TAB to find the necro. It is quick enough and hopefully others will call target too.
2) For things like blinking, I think it would help to “lock ground target to maximum skill range”. This gave me a brand new lease of life when aiming for Champion Shadow, to help get my thief around fast with SB 5. AND with mesmer blinking. It helps when getting onto shortcut walls and so on.
3) If she’s not yet done so I really think an MMO mouse would help very much. If she learned to move her character holding the two mouse buttons down (right mouse to just look around, two mouse buttons to run etc) she could do this and click skills at the same time, or at least I am sure much easier. [Edit] We’ve found out an MMO mouse is in use so I’d like a little more info on how she uses the mouse to be in a position to comment and/or help.
It seemed for me she has chosen mesmer to try and hide behind clones, and hell, why not! I did that for some time while getting used to PvP and if people are not good at finding the real mesmer, it can work. But on the face of it not all skills were utilized well and I do think she did very well, and moving slower could’ve actually helped her in that clones move slower too thus giving the enemy a harder time finding the real her (albeit she is using signets and you should be able to tell from that)…
I still think a sustain build like ele, with a team of understanding people around her should help and for her to try and stay calm when others make mistakes because after all, we’re not all perfect and it is kitten ed hard when you have a disability trying to strive to be a good PvPer but solo queue is always going to be a huge gamble.
People have offered to queue with you Ithilwen, my husband and I would offer to do so as well and I 100% would be happy to help with any builds that may suit you more, or indeed show you my ele. We are on EU servers.
This thread has massively changed from what was initially in discussion, but I genuinely hope Ithilwen takes this as positive because there are enough people here trying to help. If we can’t together get Ithilwen out of any loss streaks, then we can discuss MMR hell again
[edit] Also, my quick “look behind me” key is set to V (changed it from its original ‘dodge’ key. This is essential (for me) when running off points to aid elsewhere to check a decap behind, and other situations.

Whoever blames MMR, ANet, God, Jesus, Mickey Mouse, Obama, etc. post a video of your gameplay so we can see why those factors are to blame but not YOU!

Make profit? Are you serious? This is how the game works! Arah paths sold for 3-6 gold depending on paths. Fractal 50s used to be like 10-20G. People sell raid clear instances for 2-5G. Certain raid boss clears for 100G and the Eternal title for a whole carry for 300G. Map completion is also easily worth at least 300G
An entire carry from amber to legendary sounds like somewhere in the ranges of 500+.
And if she’s looking for 1 on 1 tutoring, the market rate is $20 an hour, or however much equivalent that is in gold.

She can’t press “C” and “V” in the heat of battle with any sort of consistency since those keys are typically reached with the left hand.
What can she do with the left hand? I mean, what buttons can she press?
Considering she is playing with basically only 1 hand I can say the pov is not really bad.
Or At least I know a lot of people who play worst with 2 hands

Good point, my bad. Can she set it on her mouse? I can’t use an MMO mouse so I’m not sure how they work in that regard. I’m also unsure to what extent she cannot use her left hand.

I understand the point the thread owner is trying to make. You guys going to ruby and diamonds easily is not because you are better, you just lucky.
I remember most of the team mate’s name that are bad player, I have one who would always capped home (regardless if team wanted them elsewhere) they would stand there doing nothing until enemy killed them and then they will be standing at spawn for ages before moving. Even when they decide to come out and play, they would hit a wall on they way out and they will be forever just running face hitting the wall, that is one of them, and then there’s this other guy who after he down a player, he’d ran away to a far point to die at a zerg, leaving that down player to rez and then cap the point that he did not capped on purpose, this person is on my team all the time and i’ve try to reason with them, until i have to blocked them hoping block would stop them from ever turning up in my team ever again. I have like thousand more cases like this, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
now why am i telling you this?
well, i usually start my day pvp on a loosing streak (yes go ahead and think i am bad, bla bla) usually those people (above) are on my team, and then on the odd chance, i get some players i’ve never played with before, that will be my winning match.
The weird thing is, immediately after one won match, the following one thousand match until i miraculously get good players again would be those (above described players) that i have to tolerate on a daily basis. i only need to pass this one more tier to get my wings. which I do not think is ever gonna happen.
those aren’t good matching, its troll matching. pre selected purposely made you lost match system.
My question is: how come we arent being match with people we have won games with? and why when i won a game i get back those players that are always in loosing match with?

We already have stated in another thread that lower mmr always have a disadvantage bc they face higher mmr most of the time. I mean, if youre in the lowest of the lowest you will always face higher mmr players due to season 3 mm setup. It leads to losing streaks and then youre stuck there forever. In Ithilwens video it didnt look like she had the lowest of the lowest mmr tho. In the very lowest 5 man cap 1 node together.
sanctuary, if your not there, you wouldn’t understand.
sanctuary, if your not there, you wouldn’t understand.
I do understand tho, im agreeing with you. The system is set up in that way that if you have average to lower mmr you will have a harder time to climb bc of how the mm is created right now. You will most of the time face people with higher mmr. If you have low mmr it will be even harder. The system sucks. Season 1 was more fair.

Anyway, perhaps Ithilwen’s found some success with the Ele/Tempest aura share build. I think that class and setup might work out better for Ithilwen, rather than Mesmer.
I’m not sure what Ithilwens rules are when it comes to answering that question, he’s usually pretty open about it, but then I don’t want to risk an infraction divulging his story for him.
I can say I don’t know him IRL, but have known him via the game for a long while now :). Nice enough guy, not a troll, I find his threads highly entertaining and various aspects of him fascinating XD
I do agree it has some degree of luck, but also determination and experimenting with builds and classes that work for you.
I’ll stress again that solo queue is a gamble, and I’ve seen and witnessed some sights in PvP and I’ve also learned a LOT and am still learning and I very much enjoy it.
