I am new to Guild Wars 2 and the forums and I really enjoy the PvP aspect as well as the Heart of Thorns PvE. My only problem is once every 10(?) games I get matched against someone much better than anyone else. Yesterday I was playing unranked with people Deer level as that is my rank and a thief on the enemy team was dominating everyone… I whispered him and asked him how he is so good and he told me he is Dragon, I then checked the wiki and that is the best rank… Why am I playing against him? It is just plain unfun as there is nothing you can do, thankfully something positive came out of it as he agreed to help me get better at my main class, thief but most of the time it isn’t fun at all and you just wish for the game to be over.
Earlier I had another experience where a Mesmer and Thief both had the Phoenix finisher, I got sick of it and left as I was getting killed as soon as a slight trace of me was seen. I noticed that it is when there is one person who is Deer and then the other person joins their party they can play freely on the other person’s rank which isn’t really fair. My suggestion is that the party gets put into the higher ranking persons rank, since then it only ruins 1 persons game (other person in the party) rather than up to 8 people.

So often are people complaining about how unranked forces them to play with/vs bad players but I think the bigger issue is that unranked forces new players to play against experienced players. I don’t know how Anet didn’t think it would be frusturating and deter players from continuing to PvP. Unranked matchmaking is horrible yet you read their response to its dislike in other threads and they seem oblivious as hell.

… I still want tengu.

Question: were you playing unrank or hotjoin? And second question, did you win all of your 10 games or not?

Fyi: to play unranked, you actually have to click on the unranked button which isn’t the same as clicking on “play now”

I think unranked is based on your current win/lose ratio and performance against higher “MMR” players. So if you have a winning streak of like 5-6 matches then be prepared to face of against a team that has atleast one player with higher MMR than you. Yesterday I had a 12 matches winning streak and finally I ended it by meeting a Spanish 3-man guild team that whipped the floor with my whole random team.

If you happen to get bad matchups all the time then I beleave you are unlucky, some high ranked players loose a lot and when they do they may end up in matches with lower ranked players.

Also as a beginner class I think thief is the worst option but don’t give up, you will be dragon one day to and have more experience of the game and will be able to fight them all
