Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Vee Wee has made many PvP suggestions! Even though Vee Wee is a Guild Warts 2 critic, it’s always to help better the game! Vee Wee just wants Guild Warts 2 to be the best game it can be! Vee Wee is frandly like that! Here is a compilation of suggestions made by Vee Wee!

Test servers!
Test things before they go live! Balance changes! New maps! Vee Wee knows that obviously Arenanet tests new changes! But it’s too small scale! Invite people to sign up for your test servers! Invite top PvPers to test balance changes! Many of them just want to see the game get better and can offer useful input! You guys said that you want 2 weeks to collect feedback from the Ready Up videos! We can give you all the feedback you want on what it looks like! But if we can’t play it, all our feedback is essentially worthless! Something might look overpowered but it really isn’t! A change might look minor, but could have a big impact in an actual game!

A perfect example of this is Skyhammer! Internally you guys said it was great! Turns out it’s the most despised map in the short history of Guild Warts 2 maps! Speaking of Skyhammer…

Skyhammer!
We’ve all seen this before my frands! Skyhammer needs to change! It doesn’t necessarily have to go, but goshdarn it my frands it needs to change! And Arenanet taking your time to find the perfect solution is not helping! Make a change! If it doesn’t work out, make another change! Just do something! Not changing things means things don’t get changed! It’s so simple!

Split PvP/PvE/WvW skills!
You cannot balance for all 3 game modes! They are completely different and often use different abilities! Buffing something minor in PvP could have dire consequences in the other game modes! Please don’t say that this will confuse the players! We are not morans! We can figure it out! If you were so scared of confusing players, why did you even release the game! Vee Wee was confused as heck when the game first came out! But Vee Wee learned! And now Vee Wee is the #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

More communication in game!
The key to victory in any game mode is communication! If an enemy Thief is going to backcap our home point, I am not going to type it out while being trained by an enemy Necromancer! Take a look at this feature that Dota 2 has! It’s simple and quick and can be extremely useful! http://dota2.gamepedia.com/Chat_Wheel Vee Wee thinks this could be an excellent addition to Guild Warts 2 and not just PvP! PvE and WvW too!

Vee Wee thinks it would also be cool if you could combine some chat and skills! For example if Vee Wee is playing a Thief and Vee Wee’s teammate is down, Vee Wee could use Shadow Refuge and say in team chat at the same time, “Hey frand! I’m using Shadow Refuge! Don’t use any skills you thilly goothe!” Or maybe if Vee Wee is playing a Warrior and has Balanced Stance up, Vee Wee could stomp and at the same time in chat say, “Hey frands! I’m stab stomping!” Who here has been in a situation where multiple people started stomping with no one cleaving, and the bad guy ended up getting revived! Vee Wee has! Communication my frands!

Passive Skills
Vee Wee thinks passive skills like Shared Anguish, Incendiary Powder, Reaper’s Protection, Mirror of Anguish, etc should have a tell! Maybe an icon near your boons similar to the icon that Sigil of Doom grants you! Maybe classes could have an aura to show that these strong passive skills are off cooldown! Incendiary Powder could make an Engineer’s hands glow all fiery! Reaper’s Protection could surround the Necromancer with black smoke! This will help you keep track of your cooldowns, as well as let the enemy know so he can maybe counter these things! Too much randomness is not fun my frands! Wahoo!

Leavers!
Everybody knows 4v5s are not fun! Well there isn’t much you can do to stop a leaver! But you can make sure other people aren’t penalized for leaving! Vee Wee has an idea to combat leavers! First penalize all leavers with dishonored even if it was the first game they left! A first time offense can only be 5 minutes! But every subsequent time will add time to dishonored! Second set up leavers into 2 categories! We can call them early and late! If the game is a 4v5 or less within the first 3 minutes, then everybody is free to leave and join another game as soon as they leave with no effect on rank or leaderboard or whatever! After 3 minutes, you are free to leave and play another game but the outcome of the match will affect your rank and leaderboard status and whatever!

AFK Check
Queue times often go above 10 minutes! Have a ready up button before everybody gets ported into the match to prevent AFKs! If 10 people do not ready up in a set amount of time then everyone goes back into queue! So simple!

Balance Patches
Balance patches come out way too infrequently! A small change can have a profound effect in game! Not changing anything means nothing is changed! Don’t wait 6 months to shave off a few numbers on a skill! Do that biweekly! Or monthly! Half a year is too much! You’ll never balance perfectly so stop trying to make everything perfect! Make it good! If it’s not good, make it better! Keep making it better! And if you do this weekly, or biweekly, or monthly, your players will thank you for it! This 6 month process cannot continue my frands!

Pause Feature
A few weeks ago Vee Wee was watching a tournament on Blu’s stream! One person on the blue team disconnected and the casters were like, “Hey one guy on red team please AFK in spawn until blue guy comes back!” It was the saddest most ghettoest thing Vee Wee has ever seen! This needs to be addressed ASAP for the sake of esports! ESPORTS!

Match History
Vee Wee would like to see Vee Wee’s match history! How many kills Vee Wee got, the points, who else was in the game, etc! Great idea!

Voice Communication
This makes it so people not partied up can communicate too if the other communication suggestions aren’t to your liking Arenanet! Communication is key, and voice communication is the easiest form of it! Yes there will be naysayers to this Vee Wee knows! “But Vee Wee, people will just spam the mic! It will be thuper annoying!” Mute them you idiot! That’s my response!

Build Templates
Sometimes Vee Wee wants to play Vee Wee’s #1 Engi build NA! Vee Wee’s P/P condi build! Sometimes Vee Wee wants to play triple gadgets! It would be very convenient if Vee Wee could do this with a press of a button! Vee Wee is tired of changing all the traits, all the sigils, all the runes, all the weapons, all the amulets! Convenience is great!

Leavers!
Second set up leavers into 2 categories! We can call them early and late! If the game is a 4v5 or less within the first 3 minutes, then everybody is free to leave and join another game as soon as they leave with no effect on rank or leaderboard or whatever! After 3 minutes, you are free to leave and play another game but the outcome of the match will affect your rank and leaderboard status and whatever!

People will abuse such a system. They will cycle who is going to leave this time, and who next time.

What will happen in the following situation:
Person A has a disconnect in the first minute. Person B decides not to play 4vs5, and leaves the match right before person A reconnects to the game. So A is not the leaver anymore since he is back, is he now able to leave the game without a punishment too?
Person A might just have been unlucky to get a disconnect in the first minute, or he might not wanted to play against the opponents, and forcing a 4vs5 in the first minutes on purpose, with the intention to come back later.

Good questions my frand! I will try to explain it in more detail! My suggestion is basically the Dota 2 leaver system but on a smaller scale because Dota 2 games can last more than an hour and Guild Warts 2 matches last for a maximum of 15 minutes!

First a leaver is defined like this: If he gets booted out of the game for afk! If he gets unanimously reported as an autorun afk or repeated suicide whatever! If he disconnects from the game and doesn’t return in 3 minutes! As soon as someone is branded a leaver, they get the dishonored debuff and the match turns into either an early or late leaver match! If they want to try the 5v4 for stats they are free to do so! If they don’t want to play a 5v4, they can leave and immediately queue again!

This highly depends on the addition of a pause system! Maybe the “leaver” had automatic updates and takes longer than 3 minutes to reconnect! The leave time doesn’t go when the game is paused! I hope I answered your questions!

This could also lessen the toxicity that is all too common in PvP! Rude dude doodooheads may be afraid to be so unfrandly to other people for fear that they may get reported for leaving and get dishonored! A positive side effect of this system!

If I remember correct before april patch there was no rank 80 player so after patch many players were insta 80 but nevermind maybe you loaded first to hotm who knows ?

I created thread about voice communication yeasterday and people said that they dont need this (spaming 1111 on world bosses rly dont need it but www,pvp or fractals does and pug group can obtain much good from it ).
But what is the problem to talk with teamspeak group and let them created plugin to gw2 , it would work Anet only has to give us voice servers and they saved a lot of server space from megaserver .

Am I the only one that got really annoyed by the constant 3rd person talk?
Apart from that, some good suggestions.
I think the chat wheel thing is not needed.
For voice we have teamspeak, though you can’t really organize teams in sQ so a in game voice communication system would be good for soloQ
Build templates I’m a fan of, it’s been suggested before. It’s not a must IMO as with the new system it takes 30s to change your build, but it would be nice!
Match history – kills would be nice to see, everything else is a no for me. Even kills will probably get bugged and be incorrect, plus it’s really unnecessary.

Vee Wee basically wants a decent pvp infrastructure. We all do vee wee. We all do.

One of the biggest concerns though, and something i can’t even wrap my brain around solving, is stopping the potential abuse. Nobody likes to be barked at by their teammates. It’s one of the biggest problems with other big pvp games.

Other than that though. Communication needs to be easier. A chat wheel with set dialogue and being able to ping skills is a good start.

I like a lot of this. It all makes sense. I agree most of all with regularly shifting meta/skill split for balance suggestions. If both can’t happen, I feel strongly that it would behoove ArenaNet to pick one and aggressively pursue it. Keep the game from getting stale!

I beat you, fair and square in a 1v1 and downed you, thats it, I won the duel.
Now in this game, some kid gap closing on me while I was stomping and stuns me because I used my stability during the actual duel with the guy I just downed… Now I’m freaking dead… That’s utter nonsense and totally a reason as to why a lot of MMORPG PvPers stay away from GW2 PvP…. get rid of downed state and I have a feeling there would be a huge surge of Pvp players…

I have to agree with the response. It adds another layer to the game that most other games don’t have. It’s the most fun to play when you can get back up and turn things around when it looked as if you were dead. It promotes great team work too.

Some #2 skills truly are unfair, for example, ele mist form IMO is too good for a downed state skill. All classes should get the same downed state skills.
It’s not fair that ranger gets an interrupt and a 2nd healer (pet), it’s not fair that guardian gets AOE interrupt and push back while warrior gets only a single person interrupt.
It’s not fair that ele gets the kitten of complete avoidance of stomps + invulnerability + ability to move on point and contest it while mes gets a random, low range TP + 2s stealth and thief gets a decent range teleport.
Resurrecting is fine speed, maybe just a tiny mini little bit slower would be great.
Give each class the same downed state skills and it’s going to be better balanced.
For PvE it’s fine, for PvP I think it’s unfair.
Best thing to do would be to split PvE and PvP and redesing some of the PvP skills. It will make it so much easier to balance the game and give devs the option to do more with PvP, make it more interesting ect.

Not gonna open the whole downed state can of worms…I think it’s fine, to be honest, but that argument can go on forever.

Absolutely agree with chat wheel and skill pinging (like in Guild Wars 1). Even without the complicated stuff, simply saying “I’m using Shadow Refuge!” is enough, especially if it shows up as a chat bubble over the character as all chat does so you don’t even have to look at the chat window. And chat wheel is effective because there are a fairly limited number of things you have to say in a game…“going to far”, “enemy at home”, etc…
Not sure about voice communication, in general it’s good but my experience in games that offer it is that it’s more annoying than convenient, and makes people with microphones less likely to use the chat wheel or skill ping (if those also existed), which i’d actually prefer them to use…

Overall, I agree with pretty much all of the suggestions, and erratic writing style aside, they’re presented quite clearly as well, so ANET devs really have no excuse here.

Also anyone getting annoyed at Vee Wee’s mannerisms really needs to get out of the cave they’ve been hiding in…it’s been that way for a while and not going to change, and personally I find it hilarious

VeeWee has his sights set way high. Get used to how things are now, because change for the better is asking for too much.

That’s not being pessimistic, this is my favourite game and I still play, but facing facts; numbers are decent but certainly in decline, balance patches are getting smaller and less frequent, dev visibility is almost none-existent. There will continue to be updates to the game, but I’m honestly not hoping for actual improvements to the game.

New game mode = same old problems
Tiny ‘balance’ patches 6+ months apart = damage has already been done.

Your suggestions would certainly improve things, but lets get real, what you’re asking for is for GW2 to have a production/development team who both love what they do and both have the goal of making the best game possible, and that’s never going to happen. We’re a cash cow, and getting players to enjoy the game experience I’m assuming isn’t high on their priority list while they are still making enough money from recycling skins for gems.

There’s so much intelligence and plain old common sense in the OP’s suggestions! (Which makes reading his posts in what I imagine is his Vee Wee voice – high-pitched and frantic, like a Smurf on Shrooms – even funnier!) I agree with almost all of them so there’s no point in just repeating them, but I’ll just quote this ONE BIT that ANet really needs to take to heart:

Come on guys. Twice-annual balance changes just aren’t enough. Who are you afraid you’re gonna upset by trying to fix things? Are you worried someone’s gonna sue you because you nerfed his overpowered build and he lost some multi-million dollar first place prize at a tournament? What prize pool? What tournament? The pvp playerbase is tiny, you can only improve things if you start actively and regularly tweaking!

A bad necromancer always blames the corpse.

It also takes time. I think there are some small changes that could be done though:

  1. Make the Skyhammer dodgable.

And big changes

  1. Make certain areas remove stealth to prevent constant instant death
  2. Put this in its own arena so if you play on this map, it is because you WANT to play on this map. I stopped doing soloqueue because I’d queue up wanting to play shatter gs/staff mesmer and get this map where I’m not that great.

Split PvP/PvE/WvW skills!

  1. This just isn’t necessary. Most skills can work in all three game modes. There’s no reason for splitting every single skill in the game to make every single one powerful. Instead, just split ones that are super strong. For example, they said that they are nerfing Black Powder for thieves in the next patch. I think that’s a great skill to split for PvP and PvE.

Passive Skills

That’s a lot of new stuff. I’d be in for it though.

AFK Check

Even more than just this, make it so if you leave your character in the mists or anywhere for more than 5 minutes without moving, it will set you to away. Then when you move again, it would set you to being online. I hate whispering people who are away but don’t set that stuff.

Balance Patches

Definitely should be monthly.

Anything not mentioned I agree with or have nothing to add.

My problem with it in PvP is that it makes even a straight up 2v1 extremely lopsided in a way that has almost nothing to do with actual skill. Between the speed of rezzing and the delaying abilities in downed state, if you don’t drop both opponents at the same time, the downed one can be trivially rezzed before you could stomp them. Now they’re back to half HP and its a 2v1 again even though you rightfully outplayed both of them at least enough that you dropped one.

Heck I’ve had 3v1s where I’ve managed to drop two of them. In the end, even though I massively outplayed them, I have almost no chance to actually win that 3v1 all thanks to downed state.

This is very frustrating, but as much as I too sometimes hate being fed this line, it’s one of those things which represent the team-based nature of the game. If you had a proper team behind you those 2/3v1 situations wouldn’t appear or your team would have more breathing room on the other points if you were just trying to stall the other team at far point.

It only really happens in hotjoins, so you can just smacktalk them to get the frustration out and BM to death when you win on even numbers.

Agreed, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see downed state removed from PvP…. there is absolutely no reason such a system should be in a competitive game….

I beat you, fair and square in a 1v1 and downed you, thats it, I won the duel.
Now in this game, some kid gap closing on me while I was stomping and stuns me because I used my stability during the actual duel with the guy I just downed… Now I’m freaking dead… That’s utter nonsense and totally a reason as to why a lot of MMORPG PvPers stay away from GW2 PvP…. get rid of downed state and I have a feeling there would be a huge surge of Pvp players…

Imo downed state is one of the things that makes GW2 pvp interesting.
It opens the fights for a lot of nice plays and turn arounds in the actual teamfight.

I have to agree with the response. It adds another layer to the game that most other games don’t have. It’s the most fun to play when you can get back up and turn things around when it looked as if you were dead. It promotes great team work too.

It’s a unique system I agree, but it’s not a fair system…
If me and you are dueling on a point and it was a good fight and I downed but I’m a bit low on health ofc. Team mate of yours jumps by and ganks me while I’m were trying to actually finish you, now you win and I lose. That’s not fair. I should be able to immediately start focusing on the next guy thats about to hit me, instead i’m too busy trying to stomp you all while you are spamming attacks while your downed AND the other guy trying to rescue you…..

You can’t even have a fair 2v1 in this game… because of the sheer amount of work it takes 1 person to finish off someone completely (get him downed + finishing a stomp)

There’s a reason why this kind of system isn’t in other MMO PvP systems lol… its not a fair system…. If I kill you, I win, that should be the end of it. I shouldn’t have to kill you twice…

But to each their own, this system does make GW2 more unique but meh…there’s a reason why GW2 PvP is not as well recieved by most avid MMO pvp fans.. and this is one of the reasons why…

death is very forgiving in this game, specifically useful for rallying in PvE by casuals, but it has no part imo in a competitive scene…

Other MMO pvp’s have trinity, which requires ACTUAL teamwork.. here, you are not nearly as dependent on your team mates . Everyone has their own access to dodges/blocks/reflects/heals…

Ever play a healer that no one protects or peels for? Ever be on a DPS focused team against a team that has healers and no one focused targets? I really question if you ever had those experiences or if you are idealizing your past experiences.

It’s no different now in GW2. Good teams play as a team, bad teams don’t. And the difference between those 2 things is quite obvious in game.

What exactly am I dependent on my team for in GW2 PvP? I just hope they know when to dodge and time their stability and stay alive long enough to bash on the called target… thats it. lol, my indiviual success isn’t dependant on them…

And no, I’ve never played on a team where they didn’t protect the healer… thats not even called a team if you can’t focus fire or protect a primary teammate like a healer…

For the most part, in GW2 pvp, I feel like I’m just trying to survive on my own

Dunno how this thread got derailed into downed state, but GW2 needs a revive system exactly BECAUSE it lacks a trinity: getting a kill in a team fight doesn’t need the kind of team-coordination you have in other MMOs, where one person needs to snare the target, another person has to shut down the enemy’s healer, two people need to deal the spike damage, and your own healer needs to cleanse debuffs from them to make sure the damage lands. That kind of coordination just isn’t necessary to down someone in GW2, but when you’re dealing with stomps and revives it IS necessary, because different classes have varying access to stability, stealth, aoe healing, boon removal/corruption etc, so trying to get your teammate revived or stomp out an enemy is the ONLY time when every different profession in a team fight has a specific role only they can perform.

Oh and to the guy who downed 2 players 1v3: I’d say the downed state system worked exactly as intended there. The game would’ve been very unbalanced if it allowed a single player, however good, to carry a team in which your other 4 teammates were so useless that they couldn’t send 1 more person to help you while you were 1v3!

All the things are preaty cool (exept ’’Leavers’’ part > i will kittenstorm them so hard in the chat , that they will forced to ragequit and the rest of us get a free-no-leaderboard-loss-rating :P)

I want a new mechanic in team-que ,
where if a ’’new’’ player (less than 50 team-que games joins that mode -we dont know who is it) ,
a pop up box will show up with 2 commands :
a)A ‘’new player’’ have beedn detected . Choose this otpion and get zero-nil rewards at the end of the game + get istantly 0.5% leaderboard loss rating (if you win the match althought , the loss rating is neutrilized and you get 25% reward back )
b) Take your chances > current model

Edit: (Personal option for each player)

Edit 2 : Nvm … some ppl will push the ’’a’’ option then deliberty afk …. messsing the other 3 ….

I hope I’m not alone when I say that I quite enjoy Vee Wee’s constant use of third person and etc. It’s quite refreshing and funny especially in this spvp section where the mood isn’t exactly light. Have to say also that Vee Wee makes good points and I do agree in principle with all of them although I wonder whether the suggestions to leavers may harshly impact on people whose connections may not be the most stable :/

More communication in game!
The key to victory in any game mode is communication! If an enemy Thief is going to backcap our home point, I am not going to type it out while being trained by an enemy Necromancer! Take a look at this feature that Dota 2 has! It’s simple and quick and can be extremely useful! http://dota2.gamepedia.com/Chat_Wheel Vee Wee thinks this could be an excellent addition to Guild Warts 2 and not just PvP! PvE and WvW too!

This is an excellent suggestion and I truly believe it would improve PvP a LOT!

Removing downed state from pvp would make a lot of traits and a rune useless: there are people out there build to revive.

…and destroy more the teamwork.

And forcing people to go more bunker, since there would not be the “cleave the downed” problem.

I’m going to add skills as well : 3 signets,1 elixir,1 shout,1 manipulation,1 banner that I only see people use in coordinated 5 man squad/team :“shutting down even more diversity”.

+1 to basically all of these, though the high priority ones would be skyhammer, balance patches/passives, and possibly public test servers (though some games that have these do no better in terms of balancing, so it might not do a lot). In game voice chat would also be nice. The rest seem good but not as vital.

As for people leaving I dont think anything should change, you already get a debuff. But the 4v5’s that happen after should just end if theres a 100 point difference in score (or something like that), it is silly to force the other people to suffer along with the person who left.

Skyhammer should have every single area that people can be knocked off of fenced off. Reduce the number of Glass panels around each point and the Skyhammer.

Then, underneath all the remaining glass panels, add a second underlevel with jump pads at specific points so people can use the bottom floor to traverse the map in ways that aren’t otherwise possible; such as a shortcut from point A to C that the Hammer can’t touch.

Then, make the Skyhammer Blocked or Dodgeable like the Trebs on Khylo.

You now have a map that has interesting verticality, interesting ways to rotate, a counterplayable cannon, and multiple areas that players can confront each other and have an actual, real fight without resorting to cheesy knocks for instant kills. Where knocks are abused, players simply gain a way to rotate to other points without fear of the Hammer, so there’s a real tradeoff between denying enemies access to a fight to possibly losing other points.

You now have a place that is actually fun to fight in and around, promotes smart rotations, and isn’t the source of solo queue player’s ire and is possibly even team queue worthy again.

The problem is and remains the distinct lack of iteration on clearly flawed PVP maps, with the majority of content designers seemingly pushed on the non-stop Living Story train.

What Anet needs to realise is that there is only so much the community can do to grow the PVP scene in the face of poor map designs leading to blowout matches or unfun play (Skyhammer), a borked leaderboard that rewards not playing more than actually spamming games, and promise after promise that has so far failed to deliver.

Anet was announcing Leagues and/or leaderboard changes, new game modes, map improvements and a system to mitigate AFK/4v5 nigh on 1.5-2 years ago. There has been window after window for them to implement them: WvW seasons ending, Living Story Season 1 ending, the feature freezes leading up to the Feature packs, and their change in balance patch schedule from the once per month strategy in early 2013 to once per 6 months.

There is a saying that you need to spend money to make money. Strong PVP scenes are grown because they are tended to by the developer, and languish without it. If anything is a threat to the longevity of this game, it is the stoic apathy Anet has for actually reinvesting into their PVP infrastructure.

Re: Malthias’s Skyhammer suggestions, I really like them! Turn it a 2 or 3-level map, with features on all levels. Top level: mid point. Middle level: side points. Lower level: Skyhammer portal. There should be good access between levels so that people can use them to sneak around them map and bypass enemies. Jumppads need to be much wider and more sensitive, and they should also not be directional: atm the direction you’re moving in influences the direction the jump pad will launch you in – they should instead launch you to a predetermined point, and not be affected by player movement.
The Skyhammer platform is a horrible place to fight on. I know they did it like that so that whoever’s holding the hammer would be easy to knock off and neither team could hold onto it for long, but in practice if someone with enough stability and/or knockbacks gets there, they can prepare the ground with turrets/marks/whatever and become extremely difficult to shift. It should be wider, with fewer panels, and getting knocked off ikt should drop you to the upper level (where mid point is).

You just described the polar opposite of balance and called it balance. The rest of my team being bad is one thing, but the downed state artificially caps how effective I can skillfully play against multiple opponents. On the other end, it actively rewards bad players to zerg on one target for a pretty much guaranteed win no matter how bad they are. That’s not balance. That’s the game forcing a win or lose based on numbers. Balance is giving each player the same potential. If I have multiple opponents the same skill level as me, then I should certainly lose a 2v1, and have no chance in a 3v1.

With the downed state, multiple opponents throws balance out the window. Even if I can beat them, they’re in a state that requires me to be a sitting duck to finish them off even if their teammates don’t immediately start reviving them. That has nothing to do with skill. Why can’t I be allowed to carry a team like that? "Skill matters.. but only so much then you’re cut off at the knees – you can’t be too good, that’s “unbalanced!”"

And insanity. Considering we’re dealing with anet here, i feel like we are barking at a wall.

With regards to Skyhammer, what if the panels of glass broke to a second level instead of insta-death? (At least the ones around home and far point) Make it longer for people to get back on point instead of just one-shotting them.

Not really: what it caps is how effective OP specs can be vs multiple opponents: if it was pure skill that let you down 2 people while 1v3, you wouldn’t have been in a 1v3 situation in the first place!
