I’ve just reached level 60 with my Engineer playing flamethrower build in PvE and reached lvl 7~8 sPvP and I’ve come to the following conclusions with the Engineer.

This class brings nothing to the table when it comes to PvP. Here is how I see it.

If you want AoE damage go Elemental
If you want DPS go Thief
If you want livability go Guardian
If you want a bruiser go Warrior
If you want DoT go Necro
If you want CC go Mesmer

What does that leave the Engineer… Scraps. It’s like the saying Jack of all trades, Master of none. Except with this class its more like Jack of all, Mediocre at all. I’ve experimented the entire time with this class trying to get a build that can do something yet it all falls back to getting pigeonholed into Rifle build or Grenade build. I can already tell some of you are thinking “BUT YOU HAVE KITS” Yes we do have kits… that don’t scale very well at all, not to mention no auto attack on those kits, and our weapon skills and sigils don’t factor into the kits either.

They need to rework this class so it brings something the other classes don’t bring to the table. I have a few ideas on what that could be.
First and foremost, fix ourkittenauto kits and bugs that have been here since beta.
Second, make the turrets useful. The only time I’ve ever seen someone use turrets in sPvP is when they do a supply drop. That’s it.
Third, Give us a better variety of weapons to use. We can use a pistol or a rifle, Yet we get no good distance on those. So this equates to some serious problems considering we are fairly squishy yet have no range (I mean come on, a warrior out ranges us)
Fourth, Our downed state is like a Dane Cook joke, Painful and you only laugh because of how bad/awkward it was. If we are downed and trying to get back up why bring the person who put us down towards us. Might as well just make our #2 “Go back to waypoint” and the #3 is painfully long, 20 seconds on the ground is too long. I’ve maybe got it off twice before.

This part right here is for all of you who love to reply “well engineer does good on teams in tourney play”… Ok, well my truck does pretty good at driving me to the grocery store so it should be good to compete in the Indycar 500 right? No.
sPvP and Tourney are completely different. I don’t always have a team to play with or have time to find one sometimes I just want to jump into a pvp match play a little then go do more quests/ help friends level. But at its current state Engineer can’t do this very well. They need to be balanced out so they can do decent in both not just one.

Couldn’t agree more. There is only one thing though… The #2 skill on the lame down state can sometimes help you knock them down before they can preform the killing blow and gives your #3 a chance. I have tried to do it while they were in mid air but it just doesn’t work from up there so just hope it takes them at least 3 seconds to get to you and do it while they charge up. :’(

Can’t say that you play to the Engineers potential here.. I mean if you really want the flamethrower build you are gonna have to find another way. For myself i got a very nice build on my engi, it give me around 1250 condition damdage. 1200 dmg = 100 dps/bleed.

Im very happy with it and yes, it’s hard 1v1 depending on wich class you face but overall with the piercing damage and that high dmg output the engineer needs no engineer to fix it.

Downed skills:

  • 2 is an interrupt
  • 3 is skill that is rarely used by any class unless you have a teammate keeping your enemies occupied

Engi purpose:
General versatility like ele, cc, support, survivability.
I’ve seen builds for engi on youtube that burst for respectable amounts (both rifle and pistol) but I prefer to build more balanced so I am useful in most situations vs most enemies. I can solo guardians (gasp). I solo almost any melee class with rifle (and bosses, just give me a bit of time). i solo eles, I remove condies from my team like a boss, toss boons around, keep warriors off my squishies, etc.

@Skadi, I don’t actually like the flamethrower build, Its just the most effective one I’ve found for leveling fast in PvE. The kit I really would love to play is a toolkit build. The problem with that is the toolkit build is almost a joke. I’ve tried using max crit, tried building tanky with toughness to power. Nothing seems to make this kit good.

1) Okay, I’ll agree with that, but its not a major issue
2) Check the video below, turrets are great if you know how to use them
3) Engi lacks in weaponry what it gains in kits. We can’t swap weapons anyway so there is no real need for such variety when we already have it in kits
4) I’ve said this below, but please keep playing the class. Your response to the down state is just brainless. #2 is an interrupt, so who gives a crap if it pulls them in. Heck, you could even save another teammate from getting stomped with it if you are in a downfight. #3 is amazing, if you are in a teamfight and you pop this badboy, you are getting up. Our downstate is fine, if you want it to be better play a thief.

IN CONCLUSION:

Engis are the best point defender hands down. Granted in a 1v1 scenario a guardian or mesmer may be better, but in terms of 1v2 or 1v3 where most guardians and mesmers get melted, Engis shine. Please refer to the below match for my backing of this (engi playing mid point)

PS: I am sorry to be a rank smasher but please play to at least rank 18ish before formulating these opinions. Rank 7 or 8 doesn’t even scratch the surface of organized pvp IMO

My Engineer is very VERY effective in sPvP. I’m halfway to PvP L17, have @1800 kills, 140 wins, over 30k points, I’m not seeing the issues that you are. Granted, I’m running a somewhat unconventional build, I don’t use kits at ALL, & despite very little Toughness, I don’t die as much as you think & I do very well.

As Shukran said above, if I want to hold a point against half of the opposing team, I CAN. I can 1v1 a lot of classes successfully, depending on their build/the situation. I rip Guardians, Warriors even most Mesmers, to shreds. Turrets, the right turret at the right time, CAN be very effective, just depends on using it in the right situation against a certain enemy. I cannot emphasize enough that, in my view/opinion, Engis are all about timing, & less about spamming buttons. My friends are experienced PvPers as well but just can’t play their Engis as well as I can, maybe because they just want to go smash faces, not plan/think ahead a few steps.

It can be very very challenging, but when done well, the class is awesome. I’m rarely out of the Top 2 in points/kills in any match. DPS, defense, cc, unending utility, done properly, at times I feel unstoppable. What you see as weaknesses, I see as strengths, what I love the most about the class IS the versatility, I may change my build up depending on what map I’m running/what I’m doing.

Explore the Class, step away from the cookie cutter builds/kits/weapons & think differently. Google is your friend, don’t be afraid to try things, tweak the builds that you find to your liking, play around with your Traits, pick the ones that match not just your build, but how YOU play, swap your gear to suit your build, find what suits YOUR playstyle. In my case, I like to move around a LOT, so my build/trait choices reflect that.

After trying a few others, I LOVE this Class. I’ve been PvPing through low double-digit MMO’s in the past 8 years & this is one of my favorite Classes EVER. That’s saying something. Give the Class a chance, it doesn’t need a lot of dev love, just a tweak here & there. I don’t want them to make it button-mashing OP, I like being the only Engi on my team/in the match. I hope they keep Engi the Thinking Man’s Class.

About the only real things I want fixed about the class are the weapon kits not benefiting from equipped weapon stats and sigils, and making turrets less… what they are now. (And making them scale with your stats.)

What are you talking about???? Engi is currently amazing! The only things that need to be dealt with are are the turrets and RNG from Potions. Those are minor issues engi should be the last class that needs a fix

Putting my vote in to engi’s are fine, i’d say they are one of the most balanced classes at the moment, Only they take skill to play decently. Only reason i sometimes get frustrated is that i have to juggle 20 abilities while a pistol whip thief hits 1 for 10-15k damage, Some other builds need bringing down to our level i think not the other way around.
I played vs my teammates condition mesmer and lost, after 15 mins of learning his skills, i beat him easily every time, When asked how he could counter me i really couldnt give an answer beyond “don’t chase me” Thats what i love about the class, react well to your opponent and you will likely win whatever he’s rolling.

How can you say that Engineer brings nothing to the table? I’ve been playing Engineer since BW2 and currently halfway to Glory 31. I also win 90% of the fights, 10% remaining are for class builds which counter mine (i.e. Heavy condition builds.)

I’m currently running a rifle burst build, and under the categories you listed I’d have to say that my build is Bruiser / CC. And that’s long range damage, something the Warrior isn’t specialized in. Long range burst + CC brings a lot to the table in a team. It may not be as bursty as a Warrior can get, but I’m almost invincible against melee. Also in team fights the CC is good against casters / long range classes.

I dunno which class you play but if its a class that needs to get into melee range than yes bomb engis can be really frustraiting.

As the Engi is one of my three mains, I disagree with a lot of your initial points. Engineers have probably the most damaging AoE builds in the games with Bombs and Grenades. Their condition damage builds may not output the highest amount of bleeds, but they don’t need to since they absolutely overload their opponent with almost every kind of condition in the game. In terms of a ranged burst build, the Rifle with a Tool Belt setup is around the highest ranged burst in the game. Simply put, I think you are doing something wrong or have a serious case of the grass is greener on the other side syndrome.

I agree that it sometimes kinda sucks that I have to actually use my brain while some other players are half-consciously randomly mashing buttons, but it just makes it that much sweeter when you beat/outpoint them & they’re wondering how the heck that happened. To continually outscore/kill Thieves/Warriors & have them ask about your build makes it all worthwhile.

& again, you DON’T have to run FotM or cookie cutter Engi builds to be successful. Find the framework of a build that fits your playstyle then tweak it to taste. IMO that’s going to work out better for you than trying to force yourself into the mold of something that just doesn’t suit you/what you do well.

Don’t make kitten up, what the kitten is a bruiser?

Everyone can go control, support, burst, tank, condition.
I have seen plenty of engineers spec for burst/tank and wreck all game.
