No specialization should unlock a specific weapon set
There is no reason for this. Using mesmer as a example, look at what the following trait lines offer you in terms of improving your weapons but yet the traitline doesn’t force you to choose it to equip the designated weapons themselves. Granted they may not be the best choices, but the options are still there, going into balance is another story I will not cover in this thread.
Domination – Imagined Burden – Greatsword
Inspiration – Wardens Feedback – Off Hand Focus
Dueling – Duelist’s Discipline – Off Hand Pistol
Illusions – The Pledge – Off Hand Torch
The whole point is that there are some specs that use lets say domination for example that don’t use greatsword, or some builds that use inspiration that don’t use focus. Obviously it’s intended by design that you might want to use those specific weapons because hopefully they are there for a reason, that being said why the change with the elite specs? There isn’t one logical reason I can think of to tie a weapon down with a trait line other than to sell copies. Sure you might sell at the start, but in my opinion if this kind of mentality happens further down the line to limit weapon choices to a traitline you will forever pigeon hold builds into 1 or 2 choices no matter how many options you have to choose from.
TLDR: Your trait lines shouldn’t determine whether or not you have access to a certain weapon.

Seems like a situation of needing something more exclusive to the xpac, yeah. The idea also seemed to be that in order to take the weapons and their new powerful abilities and changes in class focus you MUST sacrifice a trait line for the whole package. Which I kiiind of agree with in that the weapons can fundamentally change how the profession is played in some instances. However, this didn’t work out too well seeing that most professions can very comfortably drop a vanilla trait line and improve pretty much 100% over the base profession.
I mean, I assume they’ll all get balanced down the line, but let’s say mesmer get’s a new elite spec and gets, say, a main hand pistol (pls anet), will the ‘theme’ of whatever the spec is and how it changes play style work with shields? the elite specialisation is a true specialisation that must be focused to gain it’s benefits. At least, that’s what it seems like anet wants for them.

I don’t use staff on my daredevil, hammer on my scrapper, or gs on my reaper. I get what you are saying but…I take the line for the traits at this point (though my chrono needs it less and less…)

It seems I wasn’t clear with my first statement. Your trait lines shouldn’t determine whether or not you have access to a certain weapon.

My impression is the coding was too hard to write up to separate weapons from trait lines without giving the weapon access to non-HoT buyers..
There’s also the theory that the weapon tied to the trait line is what makes the traitline itself “elite”. We did after all, buy “elite” specs.
Elite: A select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.
I would personally like to be able to use Vanilla Guardian build with a Longbow, the new virtues are off putting to me.

What are you planning again, Countless? lol… I am very worried about your suggestion; I am pretty sure you have this pure evil build planned out…
Hyped for Core Elementalist with warhorn…Not!
But the idea is clearly valuable to help core profession.

I think it would be interesting. Personally I feel like reaper GS and tempest warhorn would wouls work way better with base class only trait lines for a build than with the elite specs mechanics and traits.
Though I would be worried that some combination of elite spec weapon with only base class trait lines and mechancs could be too strong, but I struggle to think of one that would clearly be too broken since the elite spec traits and mechanics are too good to pass up with very few exceptions.

Well it can’t get any worse than cancer mesmer, or my bunker mesmer But yeah it’s just to promote more build diversity.
