Weekend PvP - Ranked Solo queuing unbearable
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
Suggested simple solution: require PvP rank 80 for solo queuing the ranked queue. If people want to play with their friends then allow for teams to queue together so long as one person on the roster is rank 80. You protect both the new and veteran player experience and promote group play all in the same move.
Holy kitten, no!
1. You can get rank 80 through farming hotjoin and still be completely clueless about actual PvP.
2. It would doom players like me to always play unranked until they’ve finally reached rank 80. I’m at rank 50 or 51 now, and I DO have enough of a clue to not be a burden in ranked. Heck; I already had enough of a clue with rank 30 even. Not to say I never make any mistakes (then again; I guess most people can’t claim that), but I ain’t stupid.
In fact, I probably “suffer” as much from completely clueless people in ranked PvP as you do. But requiring rank 80 is a terrible idea that wouldn’t solve anything.
just enter ranked with your team
every1 and their mom is rank 80 already. there would be nopoint in putting a rank requirement. If anything there needs to be a certain IQ requirement to click the ranked button.
Frankly, being rank 80 doesn’t mean you’re good. I’ve seen shark rank players rotating better than some 5k+ games soloq heroes.
@Saturn: the rank 80 is an arbitrary number that seemed safe for players to have at least learned the mechanics of the game and professions by. Maybe that’s rank 50. I dunno. I just know it’s not something that should be available to players right away.
@Vans: title says Solo Queuing
@Glock: I’m obviously not referring to people already rank 80 – I don’t expect people to be tactical geniuses, just understand the expectations of that level of game play.
@Sorel: The rank 80 benchmark is not intended to determine skill level. It’s just meant to assure a certain level of game knowledge before jumping into the ranked queue.
One thing is for certain, the game is not played the same at all skill levels. And where my frustration comes from is having to play matches with players who are clearly still figuring out the game. I’m pretty sure they don’t want me in their match either.

Wowzers, suggesting rank 80 is an awful idea!
Maybe rank 5 or 10, so someone gets the feel for the game-modes (which would require hotjoin to no longer give pvp xp)
I’m only rank 38, and that’s after hours and hours of games, I can only imagine how long it would take to get to rank 80. Or that the matchmaking queue would take hours!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Like I said, rank 80 was an arbitrary number. Rank 5 or 10 however is no where near enough game play to understand all the mechanics of the game play that are needed for playing competitively. I’d even say rank 38 isn’t enough.
Don’t forget I also said there’s no barrier for joining as as team. Only for joining Solo.
It’s OK to make people earn things. Specially when it helps prepare them for what comes next.

After reaching Rank 80 after about 8 months perhaps of casual pvping, I can say first hand that by the time someone actually gets to 80, they most likely won’t exactly feel like playing anymore without a good break from the game.
There isn’t really a problem with winning some and losing some especially if you’re in solo-q. The real solution is for the matchmaking to stop putting 2/3 players with the exact same build on the exact same team.
3 shoutbows, 3 power nec, 3 power rangers, 3 guardians – etc. One out of three matches I participate in have this same setup with the exact same builds. If just one person on your team isn’t also using the lame default builds as the other team, you already have a high chance of losing.

What a selfish and unwarranted claim. Just getting to rank 10 takes a few hours, you really think it takes more than that to understand the one game mode that is available? Everything after that requires practice to master, and guess what buddy? That’s what the MMR’s are for.
If you’re getting matched with terrible people all the time, you’re probably not good enough yet to complain about them.

So by rank 38 you’ve managed to learn everything the game has to offer. Great job! I look forward to seeing your team rip up the next tourney.
I suppose we can stop posting all these threads about the lack luster match making as well. Glad to hear it.
Anymore asinine arguments or baseless entitlement you’d like contribute?

Every single one of these posts come from the same cause. Youre in a team environment and you dont control who is on the team, so therefore you cant control whether you win or lose.
Thus win/lose ratios are something you cant control as a solo player.
All you can control is what you do as a solo queue player.
Which thus there needs to be some other way of ranking individual players other than win/loss.
People say split the queues but even here that doesnt seem to solve the entirety of the problem. The problem is in the fact that you just cant freaking control win or lose as a solo player. Even some of people who compete on the Abjured and TCG get frustrated with ranked or unranked solo queuing.
There has got to be some other evaluation of a player in this game to base things off of.
I think the frustration stems from misaligned expectations of the different player types. The game is not played the same for new players as it is for something like the GO4 cups. Decisions are made differently at each level and require teammates of equivalent experience to understand. When your teammates don’t understand you, that’s frustrating.
I think we can still use w/l ratio, but you have to narrow the deviation in player experience and that requires hard filters. I think this would also go along ways towards improving player retention and improving the overall level of game play.

I’m sorry that it took you so long to figure out how to play a simple conquest game-mode. You don’t have to be so bitter about it.

Neither of these hilariously bad flame-attempts apply to what I wrote. Obviously I’ve wronged you in some way, though, enough to make you so angry! My B.

You’re kidding right? You can almost get rank 5 after one win in ranked/unranked. That would basically solve nothing. Having a rank 38 is roughly 181 wins in ranked/unranked, how is that ‘’hours and hours of games’‘? Do you realize there are people with thousands and thousands wins in ranked queue getting matched with people who are in their first games. (That’s ‘’hours and hours of games’’ btw) How is that not flawed?

If that’s how it works, of course its flawed. Still not a reason to bar anyone from a game mode. I’m very skeptical about that, however, so if you can, please link hard evidence of someone with 1-20 skill points being matched with someone with 400 skill points in a solo q.
Also 181 wins is 30 hours. Accompanied by equal losses, yeah, that’s most definitely “hours and hours.” That’s a lot of game time, regardless of what some people who have way more free time might think. Its also way more time than necessary to learn how to effectively play conquest with one profession.

I don’t have to have any evidence because I’ve experienced it myself. I got a new account on eu during one of the sales and went straight to ranked queue having 0 games played before. The first game I had was against and with people who regulary appear in touries. So yes, it does happen.
181 wins/60 hours is hardly enough to learn to play properly. People on the leaderboards have more wins/gametime per season and they’re still not the greatest, are they? I’m not saying that more time generally means better skill, but don’t act like 30 hours of pvp is some great accomplishment. You might have some basic knowledge, but the point is also to learn to play your class properly. This could obviously be solved by having a functional matchmaking, but it doesn’t seem like we’re getting that.

No evidence, so basically it never happened. What do you have to backup your claim that 30 hours of PvP isn’t enough to properly learn how to play your profession? I have a 56% win rate in ranked right now, same as you seemed to be, with not a large gap in between games played. I’m pretty confident I know what I’m doing, are you?

I’m pretty sure someone could run through the records of the account and find it. I’ve experienced it, I don’t have to prove anything. Just the fact you back up your skill on having some kind of winrate shows you do not know what you’re doing.

Do you? Apparently you don’t understand how the ranking system works, considering I’m playing a thief well and climbing the ladder, slowly. +1’ing fights, decapping and running back to +1 some more. Rocket science!
Also – https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/burden-of-proof – Yeah, if you want your earlier claim to be taken seriously, then yes, you do have something to prove…

No, apparently you do not know how the ranking system works. And the fact leaderboards means how many games you play, not how good you are. As long as solo and team q is mixed together and there is no funcional matchmaking a winrate from a short period of time is not an indicator of skill either. Yes, I’m sorry I didn’t take a screenshot, I didn’t know these days you have to prove every single thing. Why the hell would I lie about it? But just go on and think how experienced you are after 60 hours of pvp and think you should be matched with people who has been playing it for years.
Also, the fact that you say playing a thief is pretty easy shows you haven’t mastered your class. Yes, it’s not hard to figure out what you should do roughly, but 99% you’re doing suboptimal plays because you do not have enough experience.
Anet has just got to come up with a way to better determine the skill of a player. That’s it. I don’t have hope they can do it but that is what needs to be done.
I would like to PvP, I enjoy it… when I’m matched up against players of similar skill.
I’m hoping that enough people will want to play Stronghold that there will be many different skill levels in the mix.
Also, the fact that you say playing a thief is pretty easy shows you haven’t mastered your class. Yes, it’s not hard to figure out what you should do roughly, but 99% you’re doing suboptimal plays because you do not have enough experience.
Where did I say it was easy? [sarcasm] And I’m glad you know for fact that my gameplay is not the greatest, a spectacular mind’s eye you must have, since I’ve never once used a streaming service. [/sarcasm] I don’t know what’s going on in your brain, but you’re arguing against points that haven’t been stated. Stop being insane and return to the conversation, please.
You previously said 60 hours (which I still stand by being a very nice chunk of experience, unless you’re an incredibly slow learner) wasn’t enough to know what you’re doing. And now you’re being a hypocrite by stating that it is enough time.
You haven’t given any actual argument since you joined the conversation, unless you count covering your ears and shouting “that’s not enough time to learn – that’s not enough time to learn – that’s not enough timelalalalalalala” You get the picture. Well, probably not. :\

You actually didn’t understand what I said at all. I stated above that the point is not only know what you’re doing but also to master your class. I’m sorry but I don’t need to watch your gameplay to know people do not master the class after 60 hours of pvp. There is a difference between sort of knowing what’s happening and being a great player. And yes, there are great players being matched with ‘okay players who sort of know what they’re doing’ and that’s not okay. You act like you know everything and you’ve learnt all you could, that only points out how shallow you want your pvp experience to be.
I think the frustration stems from misaligned expectations of the different player types. The game is not played the same for new players as it is for something like the GO4 cups. Another option is player based leagues in custom arenas.
Its funny in WvW the community made up their own GvG tourney’s.
PvP has every opportunity to do that same. It would take some marketing, but it could happen.
PvP can also do it and still provide progression as well if people are really interested there.
Do custom arenas have any affect on leaderboards?

You’re at it again! I said nothing of the sort. I said I was doing well. Which is true, I’m winning most of my games and having a great time. I know fully well I’m nowhere near mastering my profession.
The whole purpose of me joining this thread was because someone selfishly suggested a prerequisite to being able to queue for ranked. From what I’ve wrote, any halfwit can tell that I know well enough what I’m doing to be able to play in ranked. And even someone who “only sort of knows what to do” (a not-so-subtle and quite desperate sounding patronization) is very reasonable to assume they can start giving the ranked queue a try.
So thanks, you’ve basically proved my starting point for me.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Ranked being a nightmare is more like anets fault than players fault.
When I started pvping my first thought was “I’ll play ranked because game will put me with ppl with the same rank as me, and i’ll avoid higher rank trolls destroying me in unranked”
Because that’s the concept of ranked in any other competitive game, so the name is kinda missleading, they should fix the ranked aspect or change the name to “leaderboard climbing”
Don’t worry boys, Blade and Soul is coming.
The issue isn’t low levels in ranked. The issue is that ANET hasn’t figured out yet how to match people of similar skill in games.

And you still don’t understand the point I’ve been saying. I never said that there should be r80 requirement. I’ve been saying it’s not okay that bad, okay and great players are getting matched together.
