What DO you like about gw2 pvp?
I like that I can play any profession and any build or spec whenever I feel like it.
I like… hmm…. hmmm… oh wait… i like…..
Nothing.
Combat system is second to none. Dodging is such a cool mechanic, it adds a new layer of tactics to fights. The various boons and conditions create a lot of different battle situations to consider. And being able to max out a tree with less than half of your spec points means there’s lots of build diversity within a class.
I like, or more precisely love, the core things about pvp – no gear advantage, using skills like blocks, dodges, etc. yourself instead of relying on a % of your stats (like 30% chance to block incoming attack).
i occasionally do s/tpvp so everytime i do it, i get excited as if it was my first time.
GW1 and GW2 both give you the ability to PvP fully geared and auto-level 80.
GW1 at least had templates you could save builds with though.

I feel like you haven’t ever played GW1 PvP. And if you have, not at a high level.
GW2 combat doesn’t come close to GW1 combat.
Dodging is a cool mechanic? Okay, it has its perks, but what about GW1 lack of jumping and bodyblocking mechanics? Those created such a level of diversity in tactics that GW2 can’t even compare.
Boons and conditions? They are a lot simpler than the combination of GW1 enchantments, stances, conditions, and hexes.
Maxing out a tree with half your spec for build diversity? You really need to look up the character combinations of having secondary classes.

I completely second this. I love the combat system and all it’s mechanics. Also that everone has the same access to gear in pvp. And the trait system – while a lot of single traits could use bugfixes/buffs – is by design really awesome too and gives you a lot of little decisions.

Something I hope you and any GW2 PvP fan boy might have accepted by now is that it is the majority opinion in regards to the PvP.
There is a reason GW2 is non-existent as an e-sport and there is a reason that the PvP player base suffered a relatively huge decline after release.

So Motoko, not that GW1 vs. GW2 PVP isn’t worth discussion, but back on topic: anything you like in GW2?
the game itself its p bad but i installed it back after a few months of quitting.
i like to be able to insta kill ppl with my thief and being able to escape all the time it makes me feel im a super good player. using random/kittened builds such as a condi/unlimited dodge thief, meditation guardian in tpvp.
gw2 is not a pvp game is a game where u able to do stupid kitten, if u think this game it has any sort of team play or competition well its probably one of your first video games.
I’ll just say the list what I would have said at the launch. Aka things that exited me, from comparing to traditional mmo. Ofc not all of them are 100% true in the end and sometimes meta goes in wrong direction but anyway, these were the selling points for me and what I value the most (or would value if they don’t 100% happen yet).
- Crowd control works. Aka no diminishing returns. You know it’s gonna work (watch for no stability) and if it doesn’t, it was from the choise of the enemy (stunbreak/cleanse). This is MASSIVE. When you can’t know if your CC works you can’t play for it, things become mindless DPS vs healers nuke match.
- Active defences (dodge, arcane shield, aegis, gear shield) instead of passive 15% parry 15% dodge. Or -50% pvp damage taken and healers. If for example protection, and boons in general were shorter, mayby that would be better too, making protection more active defence (altho protection is not perma anyway (without spirit ranger :S + help), guess it’s fine)
- Combo fields. Especially waterfield. Sadly combo use is non existant in pvp, but everything in wvw. Prolly would get more incommon if staff ele was better in spvp :P.
- Everyone moves and position makes a difference. CC works so you can actually kite and survive with snares. Kiting behind your guardian or say, bomb engineer/staffwell necro when in trouble matters.
- No UI play and less emphasis on lock targetted spells.
You really feel incontrol because you can control active defences, trusting CC, playing defencive with positioning and movement. Fuken hell have you tried any traditional mmo styles after this, feels absolute shait if I’m honest.

That is an interesting question to ask me – and unique as no one as actually asked me that other than just defending the hell out of GW2 and attacking GW1.
I like the graphics.
I liked playing the game when it first came out since everything was new (I had 100% complete very very early).
I do enjoy the music – But that goes to what kind of person I am – I loved Guild Wars 1 music and I was in drumline for 7 years… So beats and music are something I look for critically.
Other than those three things I can’t really think of anything else… If the game was good to its core – the replay value would be phenomenal (much like GW1) – But it really just doesn’t have that replay value unless I wipe my brain of GW2 and then play it again so it feels fresh. The constant RNG and TP items and skins that come out saturate the market and make getting those skins feel hardly special at all (where pay to get items in GW1 were very scarce but noteworthy if you had them).
GW2 PvP is just so unrewarding and not as good as GW1 PvP in so many ways.
Lol I can’t even have a list of good things in GW2 without feeling the need to go over the never ending bad things.
Thank you for your question and making me think though!
The combat system is fan kittening tastic. I haven’t enjoyed combat so much since DAoC. Sadly, much like DAoC, an unbelievable combat system has ended up in the hands of developers who have no idea what to do with it, and instead of the game getting better with every patch, it gets worse. I’m just waiting for the next living world update to be Trials of Cantha.
Maguuma
Well I like… Err… Hmmm… I guess the ability to preview stuff in the pvp locker? Can’t really think of any good things about pvp… Or pve for that matter.
I like trolling people and zerging people that qq about zerg in a 10v10 spvp server.
Also it is why the EB jp is so much fun. i can stay there for a whole day to pvp especially now they have these pve achievements there ;d

Ah so because I like GW2 combat system more than GW1 overall I have to be a “fan boy”. There’s 3 fallacies in your “argument”. Ad hominem, strawman, appeal to majority. L2argue.
What DO you like about gw2 pvp?
I enjoy people getting angry. It’s a fascination for me.. It fixates me. People get so emotionally involved in the pvp that they start hurling insults and the such. I just want to make them do it some more.. It’s this phenomenon that I want to continue until I fully understand it. I find that the skyhammer map and some knockback and fear spamming is the best place for this, along with 1v3’s and picking out glass cannons in zerg hotfixes.. and also rated tourneys where people get really serious O_o.

You have failed to retort my argument. If you would like me to avoid such loaded statements in my arguments – Be sure to avoid the statement “well thats your opinion” phrase in the future. All of my responses were directly related to that picture you posted.
It seems you are the one that needs to “L2argue”.
I have a lot of fun with how smooth and active the combat system is, and how it’s very fun to play even in 1v1 situations. However, team synergy, build customisation and over-reliance on about two roles are issues I strongly have, and wish this game can learn from GW1 someday.
The pvp infrastructure I don’t enjoy. Even though leaderboards, single-match tournaments and the soon-to-come soloq and dishonor mechanics are all excellent, they took or are taking their time to come. Outside of them, there’s no build templates to streamline experimentation and diversity; salvaging and talking to NPCs for every single little thing is a bit annoying; and lack of different game modes are a real issue, although there’s more map diversity now than before. Custom arenas are cool but restricted – they need a lot more options for funnier custom matches. And hotjoin, unfortunately, just do not work very well, and are having a negative impact. I would much prefer a 5v5 unranked solo match in its place, and let a few custom servers take hotjoin’s place.
Sorry if I wasn’t entirely positive, but what keeps me tied the most to this game’s pvp, outside of casual combat fun, is the potential it has to become better.
That is an interesting question to ask me – and unique as no one as actually asked me that other than just defending the hell out of GW2 and attacking GW1.
What the kitten?
This is a thread about what things people like about gw2 pvp. Obviously we’re going to be talking about things we like about gw2 pvp. No one is “defending” gw2 pvp because there’s nothing to defend it against; we’re just talking about what we like about it.
Even more ridiculous – no one was “attacking” gw1 pvp, no one even mentioned it until you did. You came in here and interpreted our statements as fanboyism and “attacking” gw1 pvp for no reason at all. lol
And yes, I did play gw1 pvp for several months at a variety of skill levels. I stopped because it didn’t really appeal to me. You seem to have this attitude that if someone likes something you don’t like, or that if someone looks at the same data as you and comes to a different conclusion, that person is automatically wrong. I would advise against pursuing that fallacious line of reasoning. It might make you a tough guy on the internet but it won’t count for much else.

You make a lot of opinionated assumptions. Your post is very condescending. That takes away a lot of your credibility.
The few people who like it are trying to defend it. Let us go ahead and fix your statement:
“No one is “defending” gw2 pvp because there’s nothing to defend it against".
to
“No one is ‘defending’ gw2 pvp because there’s nothing worth defending about it”.
So while we are both here. Go ahead and support your argument:
“GW2 Combat is second to none”.
While you are supporting and defending that claim – Make sure you mention that in less than a year:
Guild Wars 2 PvP is dead.
99% of Guild Wars 1 PvP players have scoffed, laughed at, and abandoned Guild Wars 2 PvP.
And explain given those two circumstances why tons more people don’t share your view of “GW2 combat is second to none”.
Keep in mind a 9 year old Guild Wars 1 predecessor has more active monthly tournaments than Guild Wars 2 tournaments have.
While your opinion can never be considered wrong, you can be classified as a small minority holding that opinion.
Motoko, the attached photo is how I like to imagine you.
I always try to treat arguments as a learning experience. I think that in proper debate both parties have something to offer the other. However, it’s pretty clear at this point that nothing good would come of this discussion. The tone of your posts implies that you are not interested having a conversation, you are only interested in expressing and defending your own opinion. Nothing wrong about that, but I will not waste my time with it.
I wish you many happy returns.

To attempt to get this thread back on topic: I really like the downed state system. It creates this tactical mini-game within the larger pvp experience. Then again I main a necro and always carry plenty of interrupts, so I may be biased, but to me interrupting a key revive and capping a point because of it is a nice little thrill.
(edited by lettucemode.3789)
At this point almost nothing. It’s overrun with cheese EZmode bullcrap that could be played by a drinking bird toy.
There was a time when I would lose a fight and think “kitten , that guy is good. I should pick his brain and see what his build is.” Now I find myself saying “bullsh*” over and over until I roll my eyes and go do something else with my time.
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
No gear dependence. That’s the reason I played GW1 for… well since release, and it’s the reason why I play GW2 sPvP…

Your responses continue to showcase your severe lack of maturity.
This argument had every option of being a learning experience. I asked you to defend your claim as I am interested in getting an answer to what I was asking from you.
If you can not defend it, admit it. Please do not try and cover up your short comings by deflecting the attention to silly accusations you are making about me.
“The tone of your posts implies that you are not interested having a conversation, you are only interested in expressing and defending your own opinion.”
An argument is different than a conversation. An argument is expressing and defending an opinion. An argument can turn into a conversation if both sides have conveyed their view and both sides are willing to discuss it. You have yet to convey your view, so this will not be anything more than an argument (even that is a debatable description.)
You are trying to sound intelligent or acting like you are above this argument of the sort.
The truth is you are probably 15 years old, and in a discussion way over your head.
Get back on topic please. I am still waiting for your answer to my previous question.
Thanks to all who replied and thanks lettucemode for keeping this on topic. Have to agree with most of these (likes), esp combat system – to me it has a more action/reaction feel to it.
Something I’m having a hard time understanding is all the GW1 vs GW2 comments (not specific to this thread). We’re in a GW2 forum and GW1 pvp is still active (unless I’m missing something?), so I assume there’s a good reason for the GW1 fans to comment here (Motoko can weigh in?). Maybe to expand on this thread a bit: is there anything from GW2 pvp that you wish you could bring into GW1?
For the record, I know nothing about GW1 pvp – just curious…

It is an interesting mechanic in the game that was fairly random for ANet to introduce.
There is a lot missing from the game when ANet decided to remove the rez shrine in combination with a 2 minute timer and rez signets.
Rez signets could be interupted. Rez signets could be shut down for 10 seconds based on key skills (dchop, dshot). Rez signets could tactically be shut down by a combination of interupts based on skillful team play. (savage shot, agonizing chop, shock, hammer knockdown, gale, cry of frustration).
Teams could be in a losing position and then spike out a monk right before time (not allowing the team any time to rez the monk before it was teleported back to base) and proceed to completely turn around the game.
The rez concept provided death penalty so that scoring kills against the opposing team was rewarding itself and not just “5 points” to add to 500.
Teams had hard rezzes with different consequences to using them:
Death pact – killing the person rezzed within a certain time limit kills that person and the person who death pacted
flesh of my flesh – the rezzer would lose 50% of his health and the rezzie would gain that health
The down state seems to be ANets way to simplify the game to make it more casual… Yet it still seems to create a void in killing the opponent as opposed to Guild Wars 1 PvP where it was critical to do so.

The background to all of the GW1 vs GW2 comments stems from GW1 being the foundation upon what GW2 was supposed to be built on. The foundation that we were told would exist in GW2. The manifesto of “everything you love about GW1 is in GW2”.
GW1 PvP was successful and was one of the first esports of the mmorpg rts type, if not the first. The reason it fell out of popularity came down to balance issues and adding too many skills to the game. GW1 PvP was wildly popular and addictive. (it still is to a lot of people) But the game is old now.
GW1 PvP expected GW2 PvP to take everything good and amazing from GW1 PvP and improve upon it. (Why fix what isn’t broken?) But instead, GW2 is nothing like GW1 with merely names and the story being the only similarities. GW2 behaves more like a FPS than the game GW1 is.
ANet could have built upon and added to the massive fanbase that already existed. Sponsored teams lined up ready to be the best because they saw the history of success of GW1 PvP. Where are those teams now?
Anything that we could take from GW2 PvP and add it to GW1 PvP?
Graphics. Interactive environments.
The thing you have to realize is, GW2 PvP sort of did come from GW1. The sPvP is a mix between costume brawls and alliance battles. Yet, the combat style in GW2 screws with it and neither game type has the ability to be a sustainable PvP for competitiveness and rewards like GvG was.
Hope that helps.
MMO without PvP doens’t interest.
GW2 PvP are good for several reasons, among them:
- Capture system
- No access to racial skills
- Free access to all traits and gears
- Maps
- Goals, for example kill forest creature, destroy/repair trebuchet, orb, attack base and kill lord…
- Etc…
- WvW are just amazing.
No more coments

Helps a ton – wasn’t aware of Anet’s original manifesto. Thanks for the back history…
1. Gear normalization. I don’t want to have to grind gear to be on a level playing field.
2. Build diversity. I know that sounds dumb to top level players, but I like making random builds and trying them out. They aren’t always extremely viable, but I like the ability to completely change what I bring to a fight. The current fresh air burst else build is the first fotm build I have used.
3. tPvP. This should bring some ridicule, but I like hopping in a random premade with ts or just joining solo q. Even if I run up against a much higher tier premade, I enjoy trying to at least make the fights competive and fun. The only thing I don’t like is the elitist attitudes I run into sometimes. Like a r10-20 smurf character raging about how bad his team sucks losing to a premade on ts, which is honestly kinda humorous.
4. Class imbalance/changing. I’m really not trolling here. As much as people hate it, I have to admit I like how the balance of power shifts and keeps me learning how to play against each class.

2 – love this and do it all the time (mostly for fun). In PVE, anytime I wanted to change things up, it required a grind for mats/gold and had to be really sure about my changes or I’d have wasted a bunch of time. Risk free in pvp and sometimes you find things the fit your playstyle better…
Also forgot to mention the maps secondary mechanics (Sky Hammer, Treb, etc). Not a new concept, but there are some good ones in gw2 that can really help turn the tide of a match – or just fun cause a bit of havoc.
