What are byes and forfeits?

I have been messing around with the gw2 api lately and when I made a request on my pvp data it included byes, forfeits, wins, losses and desertions. Wins, losses and desertions are obvious but what are byes and forfeits?

Are byes wins against teams with a desertion or something?

byes are games you won shorthanded and forfeits are games you lost shorthanded.
