Hello, I would like to know how ANet balance team feels about pets dealing 2 – 6k damage. This is not whining topic! I would just like to know if you’re planning on decreasing this damage or it would stay like this.

Imo Pure cheese. I probably feel like that because I have to work twice as hard for half the results as an ENGINEER. I look at this as something like reflect/passive damage which is terrible. The two main things I hate in my pvp are passive damage and artificial intelligence.

its the same with mesmer phantasms, they do 5k crits and have constant retalion, almost no skill needed to play.

Pets are fine, but there should be a 900-1200 range max…the fact that a pet can follow you across the map is absolutely ridiculous.

Mesmer clones are crazy squishy but you can’t just “pop” a ranger’s pet.

Probably over half the damage in this game comes from PvE entities in PvP. The game engine is so good, but game design so bad for PvP. I wish they’d license their engine so great PvP could come out of it.

pets are not PvE, they are an extension of the ranger’s body. i know that my pet does what i tell it to do—i feel sorry for other rangers that seem to be stuck with this so-called AI-driven pet.

tbh i think the only pets that should maybe be addressed are canines, b/c they are absurdly effective with zero in BM tree ( high power, high toughness, knockdown, long cripple, fear / aoe root, fastest autoattack ). thieves would be able to insta-gib trapper’s pets if they didn’t get knocked down as soon as they exit stealth to gib.

Absolute minimum stuff for ranger pets that imho need to be implemented:

-Damage must be reduced a little for rangers without points in beast mastery.

-They must be given some kind of damage reduction for aoe. This goes for necro pets too. I shouldn’t be able to cleave/aoe them down without any effort or commitment. Maybe something along the lines of -30% damage from cleave attacks and -80% from aoe. If you want to kill it fine, target it for few a seconds (vs a non bm) and kitten it up.

-Despite the fact that I like the pet chasing someone until 500000000000000 range (exaggeration, but you get the point), I believe it shouldn’t go past 1600-1800.

-Pets abilities need to be available to be binded for those who wish to do so.

-Last but not least, tooltips need to be updated. A lot of times tooltips say one thing and the listed ability features say something else.

I’ve been working on an idea recently but the main idea for it is as follows:
Ranger Pet Mechanic Rework:
Reduce Pet Damage on autoattacks
Allow Pet to attack on the move
Remove autocast on the pet abilities 2-4
Replace F2 ability with “pet mode” (similar to a kit)
Pet mode replaces weapon abilities 2-5 with the pet abilities, ability 1 will be weapons base autoattack.

So ranger complexity increases, no more pet randomness it is all player controlled leaving much more room for player skill.

The downside to this system is that rangers will no longer be able to use pet abilities while downed. But for a more complex mechanic I would definately let that part go. Also pets chasing someone that far is a big ridiculous, however it should be noted there is already a max distance you can “sick” them on someone, there is also a max range that they will follow until force ported back to the ranger. Throughout this time the ranger will be without a pet, meaning you lost a 1v1 and are being punished for it, which is completely reasonable.

The only pets that can hit that hard need to be traited for(resulting in a weaker ranger) or are squishy themselves…..so just wipe the pet out first?

If with a tanky build killing the pet first might help lessen damage in the long run (depends on their second pet) but if playing with a squishy you have to ignore them or by the time you kill them you have already taken a large portion of damage from the rangers

I think they are fine as they are right now though

Only the jaguar, birds, and drakes can hit for those numbers. Kite them or kill them. The range should be the same. If the pet can only go like 1200 units then ranged rangers would be worthless. Pew pew, grr grr, oh! you backed up and im out of range, my pet is coming back to me! Pets would be in an internal tug of war. The birds have some of the highest damage due to their crits and can stay on you with their swiftness but they are the squishiest ranger pet. You should be able to kill one unless the ranger is BM, but then it is just you vs pet. All the pets do a tell tale action before they hit you hard (except for the invis jaguar) so just recognize it and dodge it. Isn’t that how we’re supposed to play?
