I really don’t get the idea behind this. 8v8 doesn’t offer any real value in preparing you for tournament or paid tournament play, because you only play 5v5 there. It also means that you get a lot of bad match making, because everyone are piled up in a few 8v8 games, while the rest are playing 2v1. But the biggest issue is that the maps are obviously too small for sixteen players, so what you end up doing is; run with three to four other allies and kill any opponents that you come across, die from running into a group of four to five opponents on your way to a node, or stand around in a huge chaos of twelve plus players, and try to figure out who you are hitting, and who is hitting you. How is that structured?
There’s just no strategic gameplay involved in 8v8, and it’s a really bad way to advertise sPvP for someone who is just starting out. First of all, a new player can get a much more fun zerg fest in Worlds PvP, so there’s basically no real reason for him/her to play 8v8. Next to that, it’s much harder for a new player to get a good impression of sPvP, when he/she can just run around with three other allies and spam skills without any consequence. And there’s no way a new player is going to start of playing tournament/paid sPvP, as the word “tournament” is too intimidating. If the point of sPvP is to offer a strategic PvP game, then why are we playing 8v8 at all?

I had just typed like a page about this and then the forum glitched out and my entire page was lost so ill just make this short and sweet.
Money. Anet spends less money maintaining fewer servers with more people. They give us bs reasons but we all know what its really for. There’s no other explanation unless the person directing this happens to have some sort of mental disorder and everyone else that watches it happen is screwed up just the same.

But they don’t have to spend more money. There are already too many empty servers and 2v2 populated servers, so they don’t even have to use more servers, to make 5v5 work. Just put in 5v5 matches instead of 8v8, and watch the half empty servers fill out.
The ironic thing is also that no one even likes to play 8v8. Players get into sPvP because they want/expect to play a structured game, not a zerg fest.
You don’t find it fun. Ok. Other people do. Deal with it.

Really? Could you elaborate on that? I would really like to know why.
Hopefully the patch soon adds 10 man servers.
Agree with OP, my friend got the game like a week ago and entered a 8v8 match for the first time and got 11 kills and he thought he was good so I told him to go to an empty room so I can play against him 1v1 and I killed him like 5 or 6 times easily without even losing 25% of my HP. My point is, the current 8v8 matches are just for fun, you gain little skill only. The lesser players are in a match = more skill, more players = fun only.

Then why wouldnt they make half the servers 10 man? I dont think ANet is THAT bad that they wouldnt do that.
A restructuring of point gain versus strategy would help more than less players per match, in my opinion.
The reason you’ve got 8vs8 on a single node is because winning/losing that fight, then rolling back over and retaking the node nobody defended is just as likely to win the game and has a drastically, not even comparable level of personal income.
You’d see matches engaged in more strategy if:
Kills gave less. You get personal 15 points per kill as a grand total. Five if you more or less “tap” the kill and move on.
When dealing with low total numbers(we can’t exactly shave a zero off here), making things make more sense seems to be a better option. I’d suggest not giving points for “re-killing” a person if you have not gained points from another method in between, or perhaps if other criteria have not been met. This could completely eliminate farming the middle of a road, and would behoove a person to fight in tactically sound environments compared to the objectives. With the current game, that obviously would be difficult, so:
Give defender points. Perahps a significant point bonus for getting a kill if you’ve stayed at a point for a period of time, and an outright point gain, getting points for actually defending objectives—ergo, points gained before that spawn rusher comes back from his last beatdown(so you continue to get points from him). Defense points would have to be set up in a way as to make it commensurate with attack points.
It’s practice and an introduction to the maps… when I want to “warm up” or practice a new build or class I play 8v8. There’s always plenty of people running around to fight.
Another reason I feel they leave it at 8v8 is because so many people leave the game if they’re losing. If it was 5v5 and 2 people left the losing team, it’s now 5v3. If it’s 8v8 and 2 weenies leave, there’s still 6…
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

I hate 8vs8. Its plain bad. Burst is almost OP in 5vs5 already in 8vs8 it becomes silly.
One of the best improvements for sPvP would be to change 8vs8 to 5vs5.
Being up early most of the time and playing before work I HAVE to play this horrible horrible format if I want to PvP at all, because tPvP won’t open up early in the day (in Europe that is).
8vs8 is almost as horrible as quickness designwise.

Defender points = bots in spvp?
8v8 too zergy, agreed
merge free tournies and hotjoin somehow, and have a good matchmaking system for pugs vs groups of 2, 3, 4 and 5
maybe change the PUG tournament setup: at the end of each match ask each player if they wish to keep playing, if any pug players select no, then find new player to put on team and continue the next match
or maybe punish player by making them LOSE glory for abandoning team

I don’t have a problem with 8v8. And I will agree with “don’t like it, don’t do it” part. I do sometimes find it amusing after I am doing with tournies.
finding a match with enough players for 8v8 is a challenge in itself. but i agree, 8v8 is way too zergy. now that paid tounaments have gone live the 5v5 quick tournaments never pop for me. the option to play 5v5 in the quick tournament brower would be a much welcomed addition.
I think a few of you missed the point. It’s not really about whether 8v8 is bad or not, it’s about what it’s meat to offer to the game. What does 8v8 do for sPvP? Is it suppose to lure more players in to playing tournaments? No, that doesn’t work because tournaments are 5v5, meaning that it’s a totally different ball game. Is it for practicing builds? Well, then the question arises; practice for what? Practicing in 8v8 for tournament play doesn’t make any sense at all, for the same reason as above. So is 8v8 just suppose to offer some casual fun? Well if it’s just about casual zerg fun, then how are new players ever going to consider sPvP as a serious upcoming eSport? Is that a good way to advertise sPvP for a new player?
What is the idea behind 8v8, what is it that it’s suppose to offer us? That’s what I’m wondering.
