What options do we need in our Custom Arenas?
What Anet has listed so far as options really won’t make custom arena’s mean much.
They basically have been advertised, so far, as SPvP servers you can pay for so you can scrimmage… in a game without any serious PvP. You can mildly tweak respawn times… in a game with much larger problems… I mean at best you can keep dueling servers in check, but how many people are going to pay money for that… how is that going to make this game notably better???
If they get really creative with the options they may be able to turn it into something decent, but in all seriousness the only way I can see to make it great is for there to be custom map making.
It’d bring the game back to life. The game’s combat mechanics are solid, the only gamebreaking problem for most people is conquest and how ill designed the casual 8v8 SPvP is… its something at the moment I don’t see “on/off” capture points fixing.
The only other issue is balance, and if Anet is really cool, they could ease into allowing some custom balancing in private lobbies.
They can even charge for the GW2 construction kit for all I care, as long as it gets out there so this game can start taking the leaping strides forward it so needs.
The competitive scene will only thrive from this casual shenanigans, it needs a player base to support it and casual players aren’t going to wait years for SPvP to not be terrible, along with large edits in pug level balancing. Every change players make in these private servers, every change that catches on enough that people go out of their way to look for it is like a free beta scene playing out, one Anet can pick and choose what they like from and put in the actual game build itself, getting DOZENS of times more efficiency out of their smaller but decent dev team.
Working slow and steady is fine, but not when the game is in need of so many things… there is only so much time till another MMO comes out and NO ONE instanced PvPs in this game anymore. The population is already staggeringly low and there isn’t even any good competition in terms of PvP MMOs…

Custom map making would be great, but having made a map in the past (for QWTF), I can say that it requires a lot of tool and modding support from the developers, and I don’t think we can expect that from ArenaNet.
Regardless, let’s try to keep this thread on topic and try to communicate to ArenaNet which administrative settings we view as absolutely critical.
If they really want us to pay it should offer more than that:
- Ban certain classes (for example if you want only full match of 1 class for the lulz like that last guild team of 5 Mesmers I encountered in my last tPvP match you ban all the others)
Edit: Also custom map making sounds interesting and if stuff like map editors to edit the whole terrain seems too much to implement maybe only the option to move around the capture points or stuff like orbs or buffs from Temple of the Silent Storm(while keeping the map terrain itself) would be nice.

Yeah it would take a big step by Anet to set it up, but the point still stands that that is the only way I see, so far, that will make custom arenas play a big part in the gaming world of GW2.
Small tweaks in a token conquest map will only do so much for the game, like dueling and deathmatch might take off, but the game is in no way balanced for deathmatch and certain specs will be blatantly OP in it, like the more eles the exponential better… all mesmers makes a free win against pugs… HGH grenade engis are gods of dps…. it’d just be chaos and that won’t help GW2, like at all…
Class banning is bad.
It is only a certain spec or 2 ever in a class that is ‘OP’ in conquest, so banning a whole entire class full of other entertaining stuff just because of that one spec…. it’s way too extreme of a way to deal with the problem, it’d just cause massive shifts in the game to try to fix small problems… it could help, but I would only consider it as a very last resort.
Maybe if on top of a decent pug PvP mode they wanted to add the possibility for a gimmick server, like banning everything but hammer warriors or something like that, sure, but they need a good casual PvP setup first.

I would like to see the complete removal of hot join in its current format. Have a few different arena templates that can be checked out for free, or spawned based on population of the current templates of the same type. These templates could have set, unchangeable options… like one set up similar to current hot join, one set up for dueling, one set up as deathmatch (no caps, just pts on kills). These would all be open to everyone for free.
Then, if you want something specific or want a private server, you can buy your own arena with gems and customize the options however you see fit.

Maybe… if there only were Custom Arenas then. But if there is still the normal hotjoin with the fixed maps and servers by ArenaNet people of other classes still can play.
If they want us to pay the really need to add something more then only being able to chose map and max players, …
Let’s keep it positive. I’ll start with a few.
- Number of players per team
- Server title (appearing in list)
- Autobalance on/off
- Password on/okittenick / ban
- Conquest capture points on/off
Basically this. But I would add a “toggle jungle” option (svanir,chieftain,lord,buffs,orb).
Seems like another easy one would be
- Team victory threshold
Default to 500, but if you disable conquest capture points, you could lower it to 100 or 50 or something.
Could probably replace the conquest capture points toggle with this instead:
- Disable map scoring
This would turn off points from Temple buffs, Niflhel mobs, Foefire lord kills, etc. Only way to get points would be from DM kills.
I would like to see :
-Number of Player per team
-The choice of Map as well as Random Map Option
-The Choice of Mode (if we happened to have more Modes later)
-The Choice to make it private (password is required if u want to join in)
For Kick/Ban, I would not recommend it since people can exploit the feature.

Based on what I’m seeing here, I think you guys will be really pleased with the first phase of options we’ll be releasing with custom arenas.

I didn’t read all the responses but adding the simple stuff shouldn’t be that hard to code and allow for better custom arenas.
Stuff like, time limit, max points, just any setting that the current arenas have that can be customized.
Obviously, making it private or public. Turning off and on the nodes would be awesome.
This would allow us to create TDM games.
Implementing duels is much faster and easier than all the other “priorities”
You dont need to create a map, or a game-mode, or tons of coding… all the assets are already there, just let us right click a player, player hits accept and the fight begins. Please add this feature to both hotm and PVE as well. As many of us enjoy wvwvw fights but hate conquest mode.

I think this would be a great avenue to explore game modes. So if they create alternative game modes this is the place to test them.
Additionally maybe a handicap, like being able to give red 150 points at start or what have you.

I am programmer. I hate it when I hear this too, but when I say it I am not thinking 15 minutes. I am comparing it to let’s say, culling which is a much larger and harder project.
Culling could take months, maybe even a year to perfect. (I like that it just got completely scrappe tho).
These changes shouldn’t be as hard in comparison. Notice, I said should, I would understand if someone told me they were.

8 guys grouped up and fighting 8 others is chaos and hell in this game, meaning its probably best for the game to stray from only straightup deathmatch.
It’s why I’m dying for players to get their hands on ways to remake maps, it’d give more of a chance for a good, at very least casual, mode that fits this game’s style of play to come around. Something more constantly engaging than conquest (it becomes zergy because of this) yet not based on large group on group engagements (the graphics and class balance isn’t close to made for it).

Off the top of my head, capture the flag could work with some tweaking to the flag carrier (not making stuff useless while bringing a flag back, just not as good, for example: cutting teleport distances in half or a third on abilities instead of making them unusable). A big thing is that the map has to be more open in general than the orb one… so guardian CC walls and whatnot don’t make it nigh impossible to keep on the guy.
That or a sort of conquest, one with a more linear, more castle like capture point setup. The points would have better defenses the more you push into the other teams turf.

how long has it been since you played? half the hotjoin servers are 5v5, and all the tspvp matches are 5v5. You kinda lost me at that. Any game mode they make will most likely cater to 5v5, as thats the direction they’ve taken. Thus balance will revolve around it.

I’d like to see:
-disable down-state or make every class having the same downstate (chosen from one class)
-being able to adjust intro page, which nowadays explains the map (for eg your custom server is paid in rotation by guildmembers. You could post in there TS dates / homepage / other interesting stuff) This would be similar to the Servers of Counter-Strike.
-choose the name of your custom server (this is intened allrdy I think)
-Include special-sound-packs (similar to other games)
-Owners of the Server being able to join into the Server even if it’s full.
Two teams – Best of X series with map rotation & Map Voting.
Each team gets to vote on excluding 1-2 maps from the competition. Map for each match is randomly selected from the remaining.
Also, Hot Join 8v8 should be gone. Don’t see a problem with keeping 5v5 servers. They actually would teach people to play correctly in a casual, unranked setting if anyone used them. The problem with 8’s is that people are just glory hunting and don’t care about w/l. It teaches bad play and rewards it.
