What's the point? Your input is needed!
Hi All,
So I just wanted to get some opinions on sPvP to see what everyone else thinks. Historically, sPvP in an mmo has been a lot of fun for me. Whenever I finish what I want to do in PvE I could always count on sPvP scenarios to keep me occupied.
The problem I have is that at the moment there really isn’t anything to work towards in sPvP. We have a heap of ranks to grind through but the rewards are simply cosmetic. Furthermore, I’ve had a look at all of the skins available as you rank up and I’m kinda disappointed. It doesn’t seem to me that there is enough reward in participating in sPvP. If you’re the kind of person that just plays because sPvP is fun, which it is, then fair enough, however I like to feel like I am working towards something as well.
Now, I do think that not being able to upgrade gear is a good thing because that seems to cause all sorts of problems in any other mmo I’ve seen. As long as you have a big pool of players with substantially different gear there will be people complaining about it. It just seems like there is something missing.
So I put it to you good people of the Mists:
Are you happy with sPvP as it stands and why? Or,
Are you unhappy with the current system and what could be done to improve it?p.s. We all know that balance is a constant topic of conversation, but for the purpose of this thread please try and limit your responses to feedback on the sPvP systems that are currently in place.
Looking forward to your posts!
Honestly the only thing I don’t care for about sPvP is that it gives me the same points towards rank as what I get in tPvP. I’d do more sPvP but I don’t really want to out rank my skill level and end up playing with the big boys when match making comes in.
A thing that would make it easier for me to enjoy spvp is to be able to join with someone to be on the same side – teams of just two would be better than none.
spvp IS the reward. We finally have an mmo that puts scenario pvp into skill based rather than item based. The whole point of spvp is to do it because you like it. Doing it for rewards is a pve mindset.
Not true.. most pvpler. competitive player . esportler.
doing it for the fame… for glory… that every one knows what baddas he is..
So we need better /rank emotes more cosmetic things that shows us whos the boss.
Like the top 100 player on eu/us have a gold cape or something like that (more gw1 style plsss)

If you need some emotes and a pretty cape to feel accomplished then by all means push for it. I think being able to instantly make a character and get right into spvp is reward enough. Skins are cool, do I NEED them to enjoy pvp and feel rewarded? No.
i like SPVP, but…
main problem is rating, matches are often very unbalanced and it creates sometimes much more differences then gear would ever do
after this, i would like to get some new modes/maps or even more armor models etc and a way how to rank up faster… in PvE, leveling is fine, but in SPvP, its too slow…
models based on rank should be a bit easier to get and more casual, with introduction of rating, there should be some specials things (titles, emotes, models,…) which would be available only for ppl with that rating, to separate true skill and farm/time rewards
I would like PvP to give me XP and maybe Karma to use in PvE.
It would be fun to level an alt via PvP.
Needs more complex and long 20-45 minute game mode fight to be called E-sport.
And the rewards are horrible. Lack of sense of accomplishment in sPvP, definitely.
Short answer – no point, apparently. The real reward was sense of accomplishment when winning against good teams in tpvp, but even that is fading with PvP dying.
Can you even use the rank emote in pve. Or just when standing in the mists and no one really cares.

This would be cool, I have some couple hundred hours logged into certain toons in the mists spvping with them day in and day out, now my guild wants to start a WVW branch that I would like to mess around in… Except all my toons are level 20 and kitten from just pvping… It just doesn’t seem right I know these classes inside and out and log tons of time into them but in WvW the other type of pvp I can’t even participate. …

I would agree with what many people are saying and I am happy with the reward system how it is now. I play because it is fun and my reward is getting better I ignore the rank and glory almost completely. That said ANet did state they are going to be adding in a lot of other glory based things in the future some of which apply to other aspects of the game (WvW/PvE) but there is no sort of timeline given on this at all other than probably within a year. I would like to see the point system revised to promote players to play as a team and try to win rather than zerg around trying to rack up as much glory as possible but that is also on the way.

the point is to be the best Jerry, the best! one build to rule them all, mwaahahahaha…. Or to have fun at least some of the time. I get the two mixed up dangnabbit Reba
Ps – think new game modes are essential to prevent pvp sliding further into the ditch of despair.
Not saying the pvp system doesn’t need fixes, it surely needs some in the balance department, more maps/match-types for sure, but the system as a whole is great right now. People who want to will pvp and practice for skill, if they’re good, they show off via skins. Now, if you want to push for new emotes, new more awesome skins, some super sparkly effect, I’m not even averse to karma rewards either, go ahead.

Definitely agree with this.
Also, if you dont have the time to form a team and practice everyday for hours with your premade team; then you will get bored by getting stomped constantly by hardcore pvp teams. You see, structured spvp of this game is all about communication. Also dont expect too much strategic thinking, it all happens very fast. For example, if you are a milisecond late to pop your invulnerability; you will get pulverized in a second by the enemy team focus. On top of that, good luck trying to see what is happening in team fights with all those visual effects (for those that have a realizable visual cue) and camera problems in cramped places. Well, the pvp mechanics are actually nice. However, there exists too much damage in GW2. You have to master your reflexes. If you dont, you will die because your opponent smashes buttons much faster than you or has a better ping values . Well there exists some decent thinking components in fights too. Overall, after some months playing the pvp aspect of the game; i tried to convince myself that standing and fighting in circles is fun but i couldnt actually. Well, i dont even want to talk about that structured pvp content is almost nonexistant. According to me, the only sense of accomplishment you can get by playing the spvp content for months (playing the same 3 maps again and again i mean, no need to mention mindless hotjoins) are as shown below:
-Rank
-Cosmetics
-Finishers
-Titles
-Stomping noob teams or noobs
-Qualifying Points
That is all.

That is exactly how I feel. I don’t PvE, I don’t expect PvE rewards from SPvP, but to deny me stuff I can use in WvW is crazy. I’ve spent 400+ hours and all of them in S/TPVP. I know my Elementalist, Necro, Guardian, and Thief extremely well. All of that time is a waste in my opinion. I gain nothing for WvW and even when I walk into Lions Arch I look like a total nooby scrub.
Like it or not, we are the kitten child of GW2.
