At this point I think it is mostly speculation. I just thought I’d throw out a few things I’d like to see customizable and hear your thoughts
-match size
-point limit (i.e. make it 1000 for longer games)
-match time limit
-turn cap points on/off
-turn resurrection on/off
-change resurrection timer (hotjoin style vs tourney style, longer, shorter, nonexistent etc)
-points per kill
-time to neutralize/time to cap
-manipulate secondary mechanics (NPC spawn times, repair kit on/off, buff spawn times, point value for secondary objectives)
-scale cap point size
-class restrictions
-amulet restrictions (or even stat restrictions – i.e. no toughness > or < some threshold)
-utility, weapon swap on/off
-map rotation
Any other ideas?
I foresee that there will be quite a gap between “what will be” and “a few things” you’d “like to see” ;-)
My guess at what we can modify with the initial release of custom matches:
- Amount of players
- Map rotation
Hmm, well judging by anet pvp development, I would guess:
- Amount of players
- Amount of maps in the rotation and rotation itself
- The name of the server you rent

I’m not sure if the currency for renting was confirmed yet but I would like them to make Glory Points a form of currency for these custom arenas.
I’d definitely like to see class restriction implemented.
What we know.
1. can make it 2vs2 to 8vs8.
2. pick map.
3. can password protect it.

2 and 3 are basic, Point 1 is actually kinda neat…
Here’s what I would need to get excited about Custom Maps:
1) Choose how Points are gathered: set a percentage from 0% to 200% on Kills, Node-Control per Second and secondary Objectives where 100% is the Amount of Points it currently gives.
2) Length of Match and Points needed for win: Pretty Self-Explanatory.
3) a few other Modificators: Respawn-timer, DMG received (maybe ranging from 50% more than now to 50% less) and I guess if Players will not only use this service to play against other teams they know well, it would be beneficial to make Options to restrict certain Classes or make some sort of a Rank-requirement etc.
If they really wanna blow me out of the water, they give us some sort of a “Mapmaker”. It can for example only be one were you could put Objectives on the Maps we already have: Placing 1-5 Nodes (with 2 or maybe 3 Sizes) and placing one or multiple Secondary Objectives on the Map (Set NPC’s, Guild Lord, Spawn for the Relic, Treb, Shrines etc.) And maybe the ability to put down destructable/indestructable Walls…
It would probably cost a lot of ressources to make sth. like this happen, but who knows – maybe thats what they’ve been working on so hard!

In my opinion, ANet shifted their Focus from PvP to PvE, because they make more Profit there. If they could see, that PvP-Players also have Money they are willing to spend, they may put more effort into PvP.

Exactly, and it would actually be something that wouldn’t lead to a pay-to-win Scenario and it wouldn’t diminish the enjoyment of the game. Because Players that don’t wan’t to pay, could always join Guilds that have some ppl that pay, they could join Open Servers without PW-Protection and if ANet doesn’t completely fail at making the Custom Arenas, it also wouldn’t allow the ppl paying for them to gain certain Advantages (other than the freedom of choice and maybe knowing better how to play on their respective Settings).

What a sad state we are in when we ask to be charged for custom arenas lol. They can do it IDGAF but I’ve never known a game to charge for it. Will prob backfire Luke paid in that respect.

Imo a custom arena with all the things OP said and more will totally make this game the top esports game in a few weeks.If you give a lot of options to ppl they will soon find the right combination.Even if its not in balance terms it will be defenlty in fun terms.And i believe that this customization must be free for anyone.If you raise the population you can lure more new players.If your population is low and its dropping day by day no matter what you do ppl will keep leaving.Do you think that games like LoL or WoW are perfect or have great mechanics?They have balance?Diversity?
GW2 is right now the best game,just need to raise his population.These games need a high population more than anything and 3 ele nerfs and 5 buffs here and there wont raise the population

They have to spend some money to earn some money. PVP is the badly abused step-child at the moment and it shows. Those that are left might be willing to spend some money on the actual ability to scrim properly, but those who have left will most likely not be lured back by the allure of what would in essence be pay-to-play. Now, if they would do an options way of making stuff fun … letting you skin arenas, skin characters, skin weapons, create awesome logos, buy voice packs that the enemy can hear, special effects, particle effects for skills in various colors, texture packs, rent out space for the teams to put their own commercials on, definitely … the core custom arena availability tho? the pvp-gaming world will make them into an even bigger laughing stock.

^ Lul what you’re really asking for is to toggle off gaining pts on capturing nodes.
Since if that Score Limit, is “25 pts = game win” then 5 kills is game.
Anyways TY Tyler looks like the options are quite good. I hope the infrastructure allows you to at a later date select “game mode” if others become present in the future so it’s all cohesive.

That happens in all games, with these kind of systems tbh, actually it’s somewhat common to see even now in 5v5 Hot-joins rooms.

i play this game to beat ppl not get glory ranks. i couldnt fathom going into one of these with ppl saying “ok now we get on node, ok now you get on node” for days at a time. i maybe have 30 min of actual hotjoin play out of my 3k hours on this game. there might be a few ppl that abuse it but i dont think the majority will.

I wouldn’t worry about this too much. This is something we’ve already accounted for.

Just trying to give you some hope. You didn’t say anything about being “worried” that it wouldn’t be implemented. You said it was depressing that it wasn’t listed, making it sound as though that were the definitive list of all the options they would have. They will more than likely add more, so just wait for it to actually be released and see how you feel then.

Does that mean you have measures to prevent farming, or you’re just greatly reducing the glory gained in customs?

I think you should be able to perma buy a custom server, like a character slot. That way 3rd parties can own thier own server, like GW2guru for example.
Can I make a server just for Role-Playing? I’ve always wanted to have intimate relations with a sylvari.
And a “Cancel” button please so I can join different servers faster and don’t have to wait 10 secs if the server I joined is full.

With the new WvW-patch that is pretty much going to ruin any small-scaled fights / roaming i’ll be looking forward to custom arenas, that is for sure!
Although i dont really care, it would seem like a nice idea to have “Node Toggle” as well. Should be kinda easy to implement and i think a lot would be very grateful!

Dont want to sound too sure here, but i think it is safe to say that Custom Arenas will NOT be in this patch.
They would have announced it with the other features AND made a blog post, since it is a pretty huge deal for the competitive community.
That is also what i hear Tyler say in his post, so i would be overly surprised if they were released before the April Patch.
I just hope for two things:
- it will be free (no way I’m paying to play, and for sure many other players feel same way).
- custom games should not give any glory or rank points. This should be place for top teams to get some proper training, as well as other players who want to improve. This should also be place for friends to have some fun in more relaxed pvp place. This should not be about farming glory and rank.

i too would love this to be possible. it would really really give the freedom of creating their own type of pvp matches outside of conquest without making new maps. the secondary objectives of the current maps will become the primary ones. i mean, i don’t think there’s any negative effect of having this option in custom arenas, is there?
