What would make good players comeback?
In any game players are the top quit but it doesn’t lower the overall standard because within weeks new players will have improved to the point of being the new top players. The true importance to the game is getting people into pvp and to stay in pvp which is what this patch achieves. Besides this game hasnt had any top players for probably a year because of the skill-less meta.
But I agree, for competitive players there needs to be competition. Currently the only competition is in esl which is just a competition between about 20 dudes who base their lives around gw2 so that they can form their teams. There needs to be ongoing competition for people who can’t play on a set time every week and importantly for solo/duo players. 5 man team is just too big a barrier to entry for most people. Anet should hurry up with their ladder system for solo q and make sure it works and rewards activity (even if it becomes grindy to some extent).
And yeh they should have daily 8-16 team tournaments for gems too.
Really there is so much they could do and they haven’t done any of it. Like you said:
1, Daily tournaments
2, Titles
3, Proper ladders
I think this patch is about laying the foundation for the future. They can build up from the bottom. This is the smartest way to do it too. So well played anet. But the real test will come with how they go from here. We now need the higher levels to become rewarding

Like the Lord said good players, bad player it is all relative to the current PvP population and the balance. In other MMORPG I have played, when the best players left others stepped to take the crown, the same will happen here.
In my bias opinion, Anet should not even attempt to actively bring back the “old” competitive players but instead cultivate new players. There is no reason to actively try and bring them back but instead improve the game enough to tempt them to return
Go back to during balance patches once every 6 weeks no more shaving. Improve rewards, new maps, balance, balance, balance, balance, titles and exclusive skins, balance, balance again, fix the elementalist, balance….at infinity balance at infinity + 1 fix elementalist.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
I left due to lack of population. I loved playing on EU as their population far exceeded NA’s. But recently I’ve heard Eu has dropped as well. I have to play on NA now due to college being during EU prime time…
So really it falls hand in hand. Fix balance, QoL and players (in large groups) may eventually come back. But its far too late. TESO is out (love it still buggy though atm) and soon dark souls 2 will be as well. I may test out new patch but I won’t stay. Too many other games are being released.
Crysis, Lil Damage, Ovi, Jindavikk, Guard

Yeah OP is rather dumb, pvp only matters if there’s a population. The bigger the population the more top players will want to play for twitch/youtube views, sponsorship, prizes and just straight up pride at being good at something popular. Let alone that there will be a bigger pool of people able to replace top players as they move on.
So those ‘casuals’ you sneer at are the most important element to esports or a high competitive game. Nobody wants to stick with a dead game, no matter how ‘high skill’ it is., or an exclusive title nobody but you will care about.

IDK, people are fussing over what you might consider ‘higher level’ changes like tournies etc. That’s great, and I want them, but you can’t be doing that while you don’t have the basics covered.
Look at balance, variety and general enjoyment and people will come back/stay. Those are all way off, and a tourney full of hambow/decap/zerk thieves isn’t going to suddenly bring the population back from the dead. The fresh feeling of having a well balanced meta, that might.
imo the coming patch is a perfect step in the right direction and now they have to keep going monthly and not wait more than 4 months in order to patch again…its time to sit together with the developers and discuss tournaments prizes and rewards

Though i undestand Henry point, Super is right.
Without good “skill based” rewards, good players won’t come back, and even if they’re still hanging around, they won’t tryhard for sure.
new patch seems great, but it’s still not enough: Leaderboards-League rewards should be top priority, it’s the only way to incentivize competition.

Exacly Senso , bigest problem is that next patch will be in december?
Hall of Heroes
(which was conquest mode, no reason why it can’t be brought in)
Increasing population will not happen, not until china release anyways.
Since that’s not going to happen we might as well have some competition?
Afaik a season system with appropriate rewards and deathmatch as a gamemode is next on the list.
You really gotta take off your rosy-colored glasses if you think that the good players who have quit are somehow inherently better than the good players who are around now. =P
No rewards gonna help , it will be only short hype then again ppl will leave why? "Balance Patch " every 4-6 months

I hope leagues are kind of grindy like the hearthstone rating system. I think people should be rewarded for playing in ladders like this. I think you should only lose points for a loss at the very highest level and even then it should be less than you gain for a win. Incentivise playing at all costs.
But I agree with others. This patch was needed 3+ months ago really. Only time will tell but if it is 3 months+ to the next significant update then they might as well of not bothered with this update because it will be a short lived shot in the arm for the game.
I have a lot of time invested in this game. So do others. I have people I like playing with so I hope it succeeds probably even more than the devs. I know a ton of other players who are similar. But even for me this update is borderline too late. I really don’t think I can tryhard in solo q again (where I try to get my competition and fun). This is because the meta was so bad for so long and because there is still no incentive to play because leaderboards dont reward grinders like they should.

Bring back the MATs-system.
Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!
Man i would love to see my originally team come back but this will never happen exactly because of the 2 reasons mentioned here
1. no incentives to play
2. patches every 4-5 months or so
unfortunately last one wont ever change and thats why gw2 is a lost cause.
I think too many people are underestimating the importance of keeping the ‘top’ players. These players have a louder voice than the casual population along with more visibility. When famous players like Teldo, Xeph, Phantaram etc who averaged hundreds of views on twitch and have big followings all quit the game because of Aanet incompetence, it can severely sway public perception.
Aanet have always undervalued these players and the game has suffered because of it imo. Like just after release when Aanet perma banned Gw2’s biggest streamer Kripp who was pulling 10k views on twitch for a minor mistake he made on stream. He then began to voice his dislike of Aanet/Gw2 on stream and his youtube channel and eventually quit the game, taking with him thousands of stream views and potential players.
On topic, for almost 10 years competitive wow players have been fighting over gladiator titles, so I think that is enough proof as to the strength of title distribution as a reward. Even something as simple as a unique back piece or weapon skin to the top 100 soloQ/teamQ could do the job. When you think about it it’s unbelievable that 2 years into Gw2 and there hasn’t been ANY unique rewards for the top players. Even if they just brought back the 8 team tourny system with gem prizes for 1st and 2nd as a daily or weekly event, with each winning team getting a token which can be used to purchase a unique skin when you have gathered enough.
As for players coming back, at this point I think a new gamemode with a separate ladder is the only way to bring back the top competitive players that have quit.
+1 for 3v3 or 2v2 deathmatch
Considering how bad and infrequent the balancing is, top players are never coming back.
“good” players will only come back when there is a new bug to exploit that guarantees victory in tournaments with $$$ prizes.
at least that’s how it usually works.
