When to build around Condition Damage

I played condition engi at the start of my PvP games a year ago and I couldn’t do jack. I switched to Power and I find that I can now amazingly kill people!

So since this is the general PvP forum, I thought it might be good to ask the folks here when they feel condition damage is better than power for their build specs? It’s my opinion that several classes just don’t have valid condition builds (warriors, thieves, guardians) while others do (necros, engineers, mesmers). Which means that for many, condition damage isn’t going to be worth anything.

So let me know what you think? Are there PvP situations where condition damage is greater than power?

It obviously depends on what you’re fighting. Some classes/builds are good at dealing with condis, some are not.

The usual builds for necros, warriors and eles for example have a lot of condi cleanses while engis and mesmers are usually carrying barely any cleanses.

Also the more people are participating in a fight the worse condi damage gets since guardians, eles and stuff can not only cleanse themselves but also their teammates. The extreme example would be WvW where condis are basicly nonexistent because of all the cleanses that get thrown arround by warriors, guards and eles.

So basicly condi builds are usually better at smaller fights against stuff with not too many cleanses (pretty obvious huh?).

WvW is it’s own beast. I would say that Power is going to be the top damage stat in that regard because of the importance of choke points, area damage, and the amount of cleanses a zerg has. I played condition builds in WvW and went to Power because I could kill a roamer or a supply camp. Power is just too important.

For PvP, the only time I would see condition better is in a bunker situation where you can DoT while holding the point and just want to wear your opponent out. The longer they are on you, the less time they can help their team. That’s really all I see conditions valuable for. The only other situation is when there’s a swarm at mid and you pop say plague on your necro to do some area conditions.

Outside of necro’s, I fail to see the value of conditions in any meta since the current trend is glass cannon elementalists or thieves who come in and hit like a truck and the hard counter is to hit them equally as hard. DoT with conditions just doesn’t seem useful so I just wanted to see if other PvP’ers thought that there was a case for conditions.
