What are they going to do? The fact is, match making in gold tiers seems more or less as it should be. At platinum, things get wonky. And it’s no secret why.

If you look at the top 250, the top span 1700-1900 rating, while the bottom 200 span 1600-1700. The number of players who can compete with those in the 1800+ range is so small (we’re talking like 20 players here) that if they put some sort of rating cap into play, these players would literally never be able to get a match.

We don’t know how many players fall into the platinum 1 range. It’s safe to say that it’s significantly more than the 200 or so that fall into the 1600-1700 range. But how much more? Double? Triple? Even if it were triple, the combined platinum and legendary tiers would still consist of fewer than 1000 players.

So let’s say you have 1000 players total at platinum 1+. What percentage of players can we expect to be in the queue at any given moment when another player (you!) joins the queue to find a match? Even if it were as high as 10%, that means you still only have a pool of 100 players available in the queue to cover a span of 400 rating points.

Further, that 4 times as many players are squeezed into a rating range half the size of the span of the top 50, seems to indicate that the relationship between rating points and player skill is not linear the higher you go. In other words, the difference between a 1600 rating player and a 1700 rating player is likely less than the difference between an 1800 and a 1900.

So not only is the system forced to match these players with players of lower rating. It is forced to make the poor assumption that rating points represent a linear skill progression. No doubt those screenshots you provide show teams that are roughly equal in terms of average rating, but the result is anything but!

The cure is to get more players into PvP. Ideally, the top 250 shouldn’t span 300+ rating points. But there simply aren’t enough players for that to happen. They could perhaps attempt to compensate for the apparent gap between top 50 players and the bottom 200 by applying some sort of weighting to players above 1700 rating when accounting for average team rating, but it’s an inelegant solution that likely wouldn’t be fair to those players just as the current system isn’t fair to those of us in platinum 1 who get stomped by guys like Edison, never having had a chance.

Honestly, I don’t see how you fix this. And if whatever you did was a change to the calculation across the board, it would likely have an adverse impact on a larger number of players who play in the lower tiers, where matchmaking is much more as it should be. I played in gold 1 – platinum 1 all season. The gold tier matchmaking felt very competitive to me, with the vast majority of matches decided by fewer than 150 points. We shouldn’t do anything to break that. It’s working as intended, as far as I can tell.

Good point. However, the new expansion brings no new content for all kinds of player versus player matches. PvP is considered dead by many users, and it’s used mostly for daily achievements. On September 22 2017 it will be it’s official funeral and then buried by all players making wishes to never play it again (unless they get bored alone with dailies) .

At release the game was focused on teamwork, players gathering together in guilds then forming teams with voice chat and play in 5v5 in small tournaments. Then, because players like to play alone, SoloQ came, and then came the current ranked 2/5 as a compromise to not let PvP in SoloQ only with no teamwork. All this is because majority of players does not enjoy PvP and they like to play alone, feeling important in his own world without communication, but still merging into large groups for a common purpose. PvP needs synergy and strong communication, and most players don’t like that – statistics prove it, and the following expansion is a result of that.

A single player in a 5v5 team can only control 20% of his/her own team (considering this is the best player on his profession and fully understands his/her role). No mater how you think of it, mathematically a player can control only 20% of match in a best case scenario. If a player plays alone, 80% of the match is not in his/her control. In a ranked 2/5, a player can have 40% control because of communication with partner, but 60% (rest of players) are not under their control. By typing on keyboard and communicating in written, valued time is wasted in match speed, making that 2/5 control even smaller that 40%. So, no matter how you think of it, ArenaNet has control of your game with that 60% giving you players as computer sees fit. PvP is dead, and was for the past years, ever since SoloQ was introduced, because players asked for it.

On September 22 2017 it is time for PvP and WvW funerals.

I think it’s already been proven that:

1) Players aren’t sorted in any way that evens the teams by MMR or duo que teams.

2) The difference in total MMR between the teams has no effect on ending point gains or losses, but is rather effected by your position within your own team. If you carried hard, you get almost nothing. If you got carried, you get lots of points. The problem here, of course, is that players can both get carried or held back. That means they are more slowly going where they should be, and due to #1, much more inaccurately.

You would think that if points earned were based on your team compared to their team, that higher ranked players would have earned their rank through carrying. As they climb higher and higher, they’d be forced to carry harder and harder. I mean, that’s what a rank should represent right? That’s what would be happening if #1 and #2 weren’t true.

Instead something very strange and socialistic is happening with what we currently have. Maybe they thought it would prevent a player from being able to carry another or make a business from it. I don’t think they predicted that it would have such a damaging effect on player evaluations, match quality, and the popularity of pvp itself, but it wasn’t necessary or logical at all.

The core issue is the combat itself.
Pvp today is only a huge spam/zerg and as more spam/zerg there is in a game as less worth actuall skill has.
spam/zerg+this stupid hybrit—> no skill needed

I played the game from the start and I know from own expirience how you could actually carry something in pvp. Thanks to this spam/zerg and massiv heal spam it has become totally impossible today.

The cliff between actuall good players and noobs effectivly isn´t there anymore or ridiculously low.

As long as this is a thing and good players aren´t even rewarded in actual fight for their skill, how can you expect the matchmaking to work.
It´s logic. Also back then you didn´t even have a mmr-matchmaking and we didn´t hadd this problems there.
The combat-system more or less doesn´t allow huge impact of the sinlge player skill and as result you can´t carry and also the matchmaking can´t classify if you are eighter great or bad.

As long this is a thing and it has been for many years now. I think there won´t be a working matchmaking, very simle.

When reading it then it seems like 5:5 is outdated and shall move down to 3:3, 2:2 and 1:1 …. But unless effort is put into making this work PvP is vegetating …

This. It’s ridiculously easy to win the average solo queue game having 2 necros or 2 eles because opponents do not know how to deal with it. It was the same on the turret meta. On theory, it is easy to handle it. On pratic, you always have 1-2 players going middle point whenever they rez up, and die. Pretty much the same with thieves. Some matchs, you will have 2-3 players chasing you on the whole map, leading to a free victory, some others you won’t.

Point is, it is easy to make strategies to win in solo queue simply based on the fact that opponents will play like in the average solo queue game. But that’s not really making you any better for tournaments.

why is there even a ranked pvp without proper matching ? im losing so hard during prime time as if i f… the matchmaker coder´s wife… he seems to find the worse player from bronze hell and put them into my gold div matches.. i dont even care about ranks anymore, its just reduced to luck… losing 0 : 500 ? thats kinda normal nowadays

I just stopped complaining about sPvP ranked MM system. No one that matters gives one care. It’s was just a waste of my breath. I now roam, havoc, and sometimes ZvZ in WvW for my GW2 pvp fixes. I plays Smite for my competitive sPvP fix. My gaming life has improved like over night, and much less headaches and wanting to put my fists though another monitor like I did with GW2’s sPvP.

You either…..

A.) Win your 1v5 consistently to carry, and climb slowly and hope that a thrower or afker troll is not put on your team.

B.) Find someone to Duo queue with you and win you guys 2v5 and carry the team.

C.) You just queue for Ranked sPvP for the rewards if that’s your thing and don’t worry about your matches.

D.) You sPvP in a actually competitive sPvP supported game.

Other then that you are just wasting your time. For ANet couldn’t care less. Plus it just makes you sound like a bitter loser.

I maybe a troll with class.
But at least I admit it!
