Where is the E-sport?
They were just joking about that dude lol.
Pretty much never I highly doubt Gw2’s pvp viewership will come anywhere close to sc2 or league. This is subjective but GW2 pvp is not enjoyable to watch also the rate updates come for pvp is way too slow. Esport was just a marketing gimmick
You’re not gonna find esports here my friend, just a bunch of players standing in circles.
April 30th….. Esports in GW2 begins…. or not begins depending on the prices of servers.
I still vote for 200 gems to buy a server and 100 gems to maintain it.

Maybe an avid dueler would consider renting one, but pretty much no one else would based off what Anet said they will be. No one wants to spend real life money for the sake of adjusting respawn timers or banning certain people or scrimmaging in a game with no competitive PvP…
They need to seriously deliver with the custom arena features or the things will be useless.

I don’t see how CA is gonna keep people from using the 5v5 hotjoins for dueling because that’s free, even though it slightly more inconvenient than paying for a CA.

Yeah that’s why I said avid, the majority won’t pay, but I’m sure someone will see worthwhile convenience in a custom server tagged as ‘dueling’. It would let them avoid the current deal of jumping threw SPvP servers for 10~ mins to find a good group of people of sguys interested in dueling.

today, we started the long journey to become (someday) an esport.

Really? I find GW2 PvP very enjoyable to watch. Especially if its a class/spec that I play. It’s not just spam all your abilities and hope for the best. The combat is fluid and constantly changing.

He did say it was subjective. Also relative to other E-sport games, GW2 Pv kitten tagnating.
If wow is not a esport why would gw2
Gw2 is just not fun to watch(see twitch, where people watch games without spectator modes and custom games). These changed will do absolutely nothing for the game.
In short, we could say that the whole “esport” thing was just to bring in some extra box sales.
If wow is not a esport why would gw2
Wow kind of is an esport. There is a massive following of people that watch PvP just for the fun of it, along with a series of paid tournaments across many conventions/events. It might not be on the scale of games like LoL, but still an esport.
Not that it’s going to save everything, but I would figure spectator mode is a good first step. You’ll likely see more streams than before if nothing else and commentary would be much easier.

I think they had every intention of making it an esport from the getgo but ran out of funding halfway threw… at that point, yeah it was better to just keep up the charade that it could become an Esport for box sales while just half ast’ing patches in its general direction.

League is like the most boring thing ever to watch, may as well tune in to the last 10 minutes of the games because the laning phase is incredibly is so incredibly easy in that game the only time anything happens before that is off jungle ganks. The difference is Riot put in as much effort into getting the E-sport scene going as they could, A-net hasn’t done much at all. I mean look how far the fighting game scene has got and it’s probably the most exciting to watch out of all the E-sports but none of the companies have put any effort in, it has its own relatively small hardcore community only because the players themselves run the show… hopefully GW2 players will realize that and do the same.
LoL took 2 years to kick off….I’m not worried I think gw2 in about another 9 months or so will be well and truly on its way to picking up its numbers and becoming competitive to warrant esport status….so check back in a year.

nope, custom servers and observer mode aren’t going to change anything. You can already “observe” in streams, yet spvp streams have lower viewers than auction house streams. Conquest combined with lack of class variety is boring to watch, period.

LoL was a small budget/market game built up on word of mouth, GW2 spvp is the complete opposite, massive initial budget/marketing, millions of initial sales, poor word of mouth regarding spvp which pretty much killed its chance of ever taking off.

Why are you comparing apples to oranges.
WOW is nothing like GW2 in more ways that matter – yes their pvp is better which is WHY the changes are being announced.
That said, esport (and individual accomplisments alone driven) is the next level that this game needs to go to to survive long term.

WoW, the only pvp that is actually more fun to watch than play. Because playing, you’re CC’d 99.9% of the time and it’s more like spectating someone else anyways lol.
E-Sports = CA is MANDATORY Free Content
GW2 CA = Gems
Still wonder when e-sports are coming? or…

Because Blizzard completely neglected PvP and now it’s a desolate wasteland… oh. Good point.

I think if we get a “birds eye view spectation mode” where it didn’t follow any characters it could make it enjoyable to watch! I’t would still keep all the meta complexities of builds and team composition but with the laid back see it all view from top down games exactly like SC2 and league. question is do we get such a view mode and is it really needed to bring an MMORPG to e sport tier?
I don’t think spectator mode will really be anything worth waiting for, not in the games current implementation. You have mesmer with their clones, necros with their minions, elementalists painting the screen with particles and engineers dropping turrents.
What I’m trying to say is theres already too many pets/summons and fancy graphics taking up the screen for anyone who is watching to kind of know what is going on. To make it worst, alot of the weapon/utility skills are just so generic looking in animation or don’t even have any animation to begin with that its hard to know what move was used. This gets magnified if anyone is also playing as an asura.
They can make classes same height in pvp (like in SAB) and they can -for spectator purposes- highlight (literally) the important stuff.
Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!

This…
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Community-Run-E-Sports-League/first#post1886519
… is the first step to create a competitive league for GW2. Although that will be highly unprofessional (no offense – but as you don’t earn money with it it can only stay a hobby) it will increase the awareness of GW2.
Other playerbased leagues will follow that example which will improve the GW2 situation as well.
After that professional league can hopp on that train – and boom GW2 is an e-sport.
I know that there are quite some barriers to break – but the first step is taken!

Oh.. Hmm. Let me see.. I think i recall a huge e-sport having no free servers..
Ah yes. CS 1.6 one of the most competitive games of all time used this exact structure.
So many people whining about Anet using the word “E-Sport” as marketing gimmick, and that it will never be a huge e-sport. They didnt say it WOULD, they said they would support it. Which is what they are doing by introducing these features.
So many equivalents of 1500-Rating HoN gamers foretelling Gw2’s competitive future. Please just stop yourselves.

Gamers should take a step back and see what is truly going on, Anet is kinda smart in what there are doing…they are letting players have the ability to make there game an E sport.
Think about it, they will add spectator mode and custom arenas, not only will hardcore PvPers ( what is left from it ) show us how to truly play a class, they can go also to twitch tv and cast it while Anet developpers are looking from a sideline and hopefully truly see what needs a nerf and what not…..
I have faith it will eventually get into and E sport game but dont expect it for the next months to come…its the first big step towards it dow
Im my opinion what they truly need is a 2v2 3v3 arena game and I HOPE they learn from the spectator mode as they will look at other players how they play. I want Anet developpers themselves to create a map with no gimics at all, just plain old arena maybe with a respawn for a couple of times when you are dead and then full out deathmatch

Kind of smart….
Releasing a game, then 8 months to 1 year later when the population is pretty much dead finally releasing a means to make money off of the playerbase…
I guess I just don’t understand genius
Custom arenas are a decent idea, they hopefully will lead to somewhat well ‘balanced by banning’ servers and a few gimmick tournaments. At best they might bring a mediocre bump in population, the game still needs some big fixes before it really can even consider anything more.

you can already do this with streams, but nobody watches them because cookie cutter classes and conquest = boring. Custom servers wont suddenly make watching a d/d ele fighting a guardian on a small circle any more exciting.

This is true, no one wants to watch conquest lol or the same old boring builds and same tactics.
