Which class is best (for me)?
Ranger is the best for you. It is good in ranged attack with their longbows and has a lot of mobility when it comes to a 1v1 fight using the shortbow.
There are so many builds that you can choose and most of them are viable in pvp. You can choose Power Build with Signets, Trap build or a Spirit build.
Well, since the sPvP format gives you immediate access to all of your tools (you don’t have to level or gear up or unlock skills for sPvP!), you can just make a bunch of different professions and immediately take them to Heart of the Mists to see what they’re like at full power.
I will say that in GW2 there’s less of a distinction between ranged and melee because a lot of professions or builds will have both a ranged and a melee weapon set. So it’s less about ranged or melee and more about when it’s best to be at a specific range.
I would say the only profession that doesn’t have extensive range options is guardians, but even they have at least a couple of ranged attacks.

Then you have the mid range Classes like Ele or Engi but these two are atm not viable in competitive play but fine when you only want to play Hot Join.
Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll roll a Ranger.
Is there a disadvantage to jumping straight into Heart of the Mists? Or can I seriously just roll a Ranger and then enjoy all the PVP there is in the game without having to grind through PVE content?!
You can go to the Heart of the Mist after the Tutorial quest. And you have no disadvantages. You will have the same stats as all other PvP players.
You are at equal footing with everyone in sPvP, you just have to visit the vendors to equip the Amulet/Runes/Sigils of your choice but everything is the same for everyone, aside from cosmetics but you unlock new skins with Glory as you play.

Yep! Welcome.
Start with Warrior; easiest to learn easiest to play.
Move on to Spirit Ranger,
Have some fun with Necro
Then pick up Thief
and finish off with Mesmer/Ele/Guard/Engi

You can use Rune of the fighter and Soldier Amulet instead if you wish to roll a Spirit Build. it has better damage and much larger hp. Stacking conditions is a bit boring and it takes really long before you can kill someone.
Again Thanks! I just started playing and it seems fun. Can you level up in Heart of Mists? If not then do I have to level up in PVE to participate effectively in WvW?
you only gain rank in pvp. exp can be gained in pve and wvw.
For WvW you are scaled up to level 80, but generally speaking the only thing that scales up is your HP. You’ll still be a really easy target in WvW. But yeah, in WvW you have to use what you earn in PvE.
You can’t level in sPvP sadly. The exp system is replaced by a rank system that unlocks new armor skins the higher up you go. There’s also several nice sets of armor and weapons you can get for just winning solo and team arena matches, which are equivalent to just queueing up for a battleground in WoW.
There’s also shooter-style hotjoin servers that can be fun, but not really competitive.

If you wan’t to keep yourself busy till wildstar, I don’t think you will enjoy playing ranger. It has 0 challenge and is hated by the community because of how faceroll it is. Also, longbow and shortbow are not the best weapon sets for rangers.
You will find out that staying at range won’t get you any close to killing people. Most of times you will be switching from ranged to melee. Like Pistol/Shield Engies, even though they have a pistol, most of the time they’re at melee range. Greatsword Mesmers have to go into melee range aswell. So if you’re looking for pure ranged play, you wont find it successful here.
That said, i think the most entertaining class to play is engineer. It’s the most unique and has a gameplay that you won’t find in any mmo out there. If you do end up trying to play engineer, I’d recommend you watch Ostrich Eggs’ stream on twitch.tv
PS: I read someone say engie is not viable. Dont mind them, engie is really good.

i just noticed that you keep dissing rangers on your posts.
shagmooth, do not listen to this guy. His opinion is just biased because of his apparent insecurity with rangers.
Run a ranger and enjoy. ^^,

Hi Everyone,
I’m new to the game and was wondering what class to role. I’m an ex WoW arena junky and have lots of experience in various MMO PvP scenarios and am looking forward to seeing what GW2 has to offer. I’m mainly interested in SPvP and would like to play a range class as I’ve played lots of melee classes in the past and am in the mood for a change. That said, if all the range classes are over-represented and/or nurfed to the ground then I’m OK playing whatever.
That all said, anyone have any suggestions for what I should make first? I need something to tide me over till Wildstar.
Thanks!
You are in the mood for a change?
Play engineer.
It’s entirely different compared to everything I have ever played.
because he doesn’t know it himself

so all the best players of this game have insecurity with rangers?
dude, ranger is stupid easy to play, and there’s nothing you can say agaisnt that that won’t make you look like a fool lol
I agree. Dropping turrets and spamming grenades is really fun and takes more skills.
You need to stop deceiving people including yourself. Seriously.

because everyone uses turrets amirite or amirite
No need to start a flame thread. I’m sure both engi and rangers have their fans and haters.
If this game is at all like any of the other MMOs I’ve played I think it’s best to find a class I enjoy and stick to them, the classes that are OP will shift as the devs make their changes.
I just played an Arena and got the crap kicked out of me so when I rolled my face on the keyboard as a ranger I didn’t get the win. I’ll have to spend some time reading up on the classes, but it’s nice that I dont have to level them to see what they would be like in PVP.
Thanks again everyone.

if you think it takes more skill because you run a different class is just wrong. We all have the same 11 skill slots and you have the option to choose active skills or passive skills.
A spirit ranger sacrifices all 4 slots for his spirits to gain buffs and protection. You might think it’s a brainless build but as soon as the spirits die, then evasion comes into play.
Seriously, you need to try this build for you to understand. I don’t see the reason for all this hatred towards rangers calling us petting zoo and walking salad. That’s just not fair.
(edited by Valentin.2073)
The only thing that matters with a build is whether or not it puts you and your team in an advantage.
That said, Ranger is the easiest class to play in the game running far away. They are really important to have in Conquest because of point defense, and they will be a bit more risk/reward with incentives to run greatsword that are coming in the Tuesday patch, but it’s going to be a long time before people respect Ranger mains
Ranger is far more close range than you might think
If you really want a ranged class, go for a necro or engie.
And enough with the ranger hate. Go play ranger yourself if it is so easy. But you won’t, probably because you cant and you really just post this crap because you are mentally blocking yorself from getting any better.
(edited by Ryan.9387)
Don’t get me wrong I acknowledge how strong Ranger is and plan on running it in any queue that doesn’t have a Ranger on the team.
I respect its effectiveness, but it’s hard to argue that people like Rangers. I mean, the map chat spam in matches, forums, and HotM chat tells you what people think of Rangers lol

Go with Warrior.
There is absolutely no reason to play something else in PvP right now, except maybe for Guardian.
Also, forget about ranged-melee profession.
No profession in Guild Wars 2 is exclusively ranged or melee.
