Why Transparency is paramount to success.
Just as a followup to this:
Why were people who were asking about PvP in the Twitch Stream banned? It wasn’t as if they were trolling, the legitimate question askers were getting banned when asking about the missing Paid Tournaments feature on the recent Halloween blogpost as well as future PvP plans.
It’s one thing to ignore their questions during a stream that was meant to update users about upcoming events and the Halloween patch; it’s entirely another thing to ban them. This falls under the unprofessional category that’s been so evident with the moderating teams under ArenaNet.
Anvil Rock
Demonstrative/Bible/Sprankles
To add to demonstrative’s point: How does one get their question answered then? I politely tweeted the GW2 twitter account, as well as asked in the twitch chat politely as well and no dice (even in contrast to 15 or so people in chat screaming “PVPVPPVPVPVPVPVPVPPVP”)
Additionally, how is good moderation supposed to happen in a twitch channel (eg. not spam, and not non-sequitor badgering) when there are 2 (there were 3 but I assume that the 3rd was the stream account, and nobody was manning it) moderators per 3,500 people?
@Colin
I feel like there was a communication mis-match with this latest patch.
Many of us were under the assumption that the patch guaranteed Paid tournaments as well as a host of other fixes.
I feel as if this act breaks previous trust based on comments you have made in regards patch announcements and fulfilling those promises (such as Portal not being able to carry bundles).
Sadly, I personally feel rather betrayed. This patch was going to make it or break it for me as a sign of things to come (in regards to sPvP). As of now, I will be going on hiatus from this game until I see some more concrete changes, or at least some real transparency on the issues.
I would like to thank you for your previous attempts at communicating with the community.
Sincerely,
-Defektive
If I recall, the details of paid tournaments were already laid out in a recent blog post. What new information was expected, a release date? Odds are, they fixed some of the exploits that were breaking tPvP (if I’m reading these forums correctly), and they’re going to give it a bit to make sure the appropriate changes were made, using Free Tournaments to verify.
Which the patch notes basically say.
I’m curious why people assumed Paid Tournies were a shoe-in for this most recent patch. Maybe I missed a post or communication or two, but unless they say “Hey it’s going to release on XX/YY/ZZZZ”, I’m not sure why anyone would set themselves up for disappointment like that.
Also, regarding people being banned in Twitch, I feel like I’m missing half of the story.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
The gravity of balancing sPvP lies equally in the results it will have in all parts of the game. The game is all one unifying system. Which is why ANet deliberately postpones promising features unless all groups, the game balancing, PvP/WvW and PvE groups can decide together and agree.
Regarding the transparency issues, I am content playing this game for months to come, I don’t need someone to explain every single issue to me, only the greater problems ANet faces. So perhaps a middle would work best?
Good post. Have not seen Anet comment on ANYTHING regarding unbalanced aspects of the game. Never saw no one say “So hey, this is the deal; we know X is over the top strong atm, but we will be changing that asap.”

I don’t think the community would be able to handle comments like that, especially if ANet decides X isn’t actually over the top strong.

What I want is feedback with spesific content. Not words of comfort that could well mean anything.
For instance tell me how I, as a necro with 18k hp, am supposed to survive steal + cloack and dagger + backstab = 20k dmg
And that still leaves me facing the rest of his dps. Theifs not a BIT strong compared to necro you think? Playing as a theif makes me 1on1 players far above my skill level.
Cogbyrn, paid tournaments were in the blogpost highlighting the Halloween update on the 22nd. Days beforehand, the tournament portion of the blogpost was taken off with no announcement. Threads and posts asking about it were deleted by moderators.
There have also been several mentions about certain balance issues that have not come through yet either. I’m sure you’ll find them if you look.

Before anything, possibilities of any class are too limited to be able to adapt to at least most situations.
In gw, it was always battle between meta builds and counters to specifically those builds. And almost any change coming to pvp there was obvious.
Here, with whole full-support role destroyed, it comes down to simply defense vs offense. By the game mechanic here, defense is always stronger, but only offense can really be pushed to extreme. In this game, build is reference to main stats and way of dealing/dealing with damage. There is no what could be called the trademark of first gw – hard counters. There is no shutdowns. No punishments. There is no individuality in any skill and trait set. Without a build-specific (not class one) rock-paper-scissors model (that should come with diversity and specializations of builds) this will all end up with silly op/nerf talk. There is no balance in being average in everything like current game promotes. It should be destroy one to be destroyed by another. That is what made Guild Wars so insanely competitive.
I think this needs a bump considering the state of things.
I saw the first post from colin and was so excited for a minute and then saw the date it was posted and pretty much /facepalm
but guys look how fast they are adding stuff! paid tournament finally working and a new map with the exact same conquest play style. amazing speed anet!
/sarcasm
I’m surprised that there are still people playing. It’s quite amusing to be honest.
Now I’m going to pour some whisky into glass and play a good game.
Hint: not this one.
Long live sPvP! Cheers!

I’m amused that you get amusement out of people playing a game they enjoy but you don’t.
Enjoy playing the game you like.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
I’m amused by how the player-customer expectations tumbled over the years.
PvP’s good? Good? Yes, but a joke.
And thanks, I will enjoy pretty much anything but GW2. Might as well go back to GW1 since lots of friends went back there.
Totally agree and support the OP.
Guys, Planetside 2 is amazing.
leman player-customer expectations are higher then I have ever seen, the instant gratification generation demand everything be done exactly as they say and done right now! Its fine to try and get the things you want implemented its another just to cry, so if you are going to make vague QQ posts take your ball and go then.
Demanding transparency from a game developer…. lol ok, if these people spent 1/8th the effort demanding the same of their Governments the world would be a much better place.
Anet has already said and proved they are working on it, calm the kitten down play another game for a bit come back in a few months or do some pve/wvw whatever it takes to stop you from being such dicks.
(edited by Xom.9264)
after almost 2 months, we have got almost nothing, some moderate balance changes, paid tournaments which didnt solve anything and are almost useless (at least due to their wait time), pvp material transmutation which is good and … wait, what? i think thats all… i really hope something big and usefull is comming very soon and im not talking about custom arenas o.O oh god i hope they wont be next thing comming…
I am, all being said, happy that Anet is not doing sweeping, gamebreaking “balance fixes” like “that other company”. Roll out changes slowly and do not base changes on 8v8 hotjoin whine. If that had been the case we’d see zero instead of one warrior breaking through in high-level competitive, rangers would be back to auto-attack spam and Thieves would be removed from the game.
Also, why was OP infracted for his post?!?
Also, why was OP infracted for his post?!?
They didn’t like that I used different font sizes based on subject of the discussion. They also didn’t like the original thread title:
Devs vs. Community: Why Transparency is paramount to success
So they changed it, infracted me and then kindly notified me via PM.
To the moderator’s defense, the use of bold/underline is already a little blinding, so differing sizes would make it look a little crazy. Also, “Devs vs. Community” makes it sound like they’re actively fighting against us or doing battle with us, so it didn’t really add anything other than dramatic effect (which, these forums could use less drama).
To Defektive’s defense, moderating stylistic choice feels a bit… oppressive. I’m not sure using font features to change size/etc. goes against any forum CoC. I just thought using excessive caps was a thing.
Either way, red posts (I don’t like calling them “devs”, because most everyone who post from ANet on the forum isn’t an actual developer in the true sense of the term) do seem to come in bursts. Perhaps it would ease anxious minds if they just spread the wealth out to a post on some topic every few days to maintain presence.

Yeah, I love the game. Both TPVP, WvWvW and even some of the PVE. I just wish we would get more updates for TPVP and WvWvW.
I want to understand what their plans are for Tpvp. I just don’t see the communication.

I’m not quite sure I know what you’re talking about. They’ve told us that some GREAT things are coming to pvp. So great in fact that they don’t want to ruin the surprise of it all…
Yeah, good point
What we don’t want to do is post and say, “We’re doing x and this is how it’s going to work!” and then come back say, “no we lied we are actually doing Y”. We have a strict policy of talking about features and changes once they are far enough along we feel comfortable they are going to work, so we’re actually always delivering on our promises.
Is this why the rangers haven’t heard from JP in a while? Did you guys take away his internet access?
I still love this game, but I do feel disappointed in some aspects. I have always been a ranger/archer class with a bow because that’s what I love. Ironically I was an ele in GW1 and switched over to a ranger. Now I start as a ranger and switch over to an ele. Getting into sPvP a little bit more, these posts are kinda sad.
Also, nice necro (in relation to the thread, not the profession)
Well the state of the game discussion with the dev is tomorrow. Hopefully he gets grilled and we get some answers then.
I believe this thread needs a bump.
As of late we all have been discussing transparency and lack there of. ArenaNet made a decent attempt at one point trying to communicate to the community and this is where they chose to inform us.
About 4 months ago they mentioned custom servers for sPvP would be highest priority…now they release a new map (which is nice), but no real update on the progress of the arena servers at all since then…
But guild missions are ready “suddenly”, which also got mentioned sometime around release.
I guess its not an issue, that AN isnt transparent enough…but more of an issue they dont keep us (players) “on track” enough…
Would also like to see some ui screenshots or else of features “in-the-makeing” BEFORE they get released.
IMHO AN could verify via these by community reactions, if their “nearly polished and ready” features are “really” ready and “what the players want for the game”.
Maybe the players have some cool additional and easy/fast to implement ideas…?
But monthly preview page was a good addition, have to admit.
Wow, old thread. But…somehow still relevant.
We totally agree! We’re working on another upcoming PvP stuff update that’ll be coming out shortly once we’ve verified everything is working correctly.
We’ve actually posted in a number of threads here (now no longer on the front page) detailing what our plans are in the near future for SPvP, as well as posted a blog post that summarizes what’s coming shortly, and the build note preview on paid tournaments for the Halloween update. We’ll be going into more detail specific about competitive pvp next week on the blog including screenshots and feature descriptions, and of course will continue to update in these forums as well.
Transparency in every part of the game is very important to us, and I think you’ll be thrilled so see how quickly new features for pvp come rolling online over the next few months. This is a huge focus for us, and a community and part of the game we take very seriously, and we’ll strive to keep making sure you all know what we’ve got planned, and where we’re taking the game to reach its ultimate long term goals.
Posted 4 months ago. What went wrong?
It sounds like they had big plans for November-January, but the reality is that those months had very little to offer for PvP, with Temple and the new Paid system being the only really notable changes (invisible matchmaking to a lesser extent). They’ve said numerous times that making new maps is relatively easy, meaning that Silent Storm/Spirit Watch can’t have sucked up that much of their development time. So where did all of their plans go? What exactly interfered with their schedule when visible changes have been so rare?

I think the community deserves an honest response from the developers.
Not that I would know better or anything but it seems like they haven’t followed through on their own word.

Custom Arenas were taking longer than our original estimation, so we temporarily postponed the feature to get the Ratings & Matchmaking system in. While I won’t say how close the Custom Arena feature is to release. I will say that we are back to working on it, as well as Spectator Mode – as hinted at by Colin’s “Guild Wars 2 in the Months Ahead” January announcement.
Thank you for saying something.
Yep, thanks pal.
Love you Tyler, looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Pretty stoked about the spectator mode being mentioned too.
I wonder if GW2 is just some huge social experiment to see how much bullkitten and promises a gamer can take.

AND WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL US BEFORE ?
Is it so hard to understand that this kind of behaviour is literally INFURIATING for what is left of the PvP community ?
we
want
to
know
I mean, c’mon, the patch is going to be released in 2 days and we have absolutely no idea what’s going iùto change with it
We have no idea about your goals for class balancing, we have no idea about your goals to attracth new players, we have no idea about your goals to make PvP rewards attractive, we have no idea about your plans to increase this game’s competitiveness, we have no idea about how your “matchmaking and ranking” implemntation is going to be etc etc etc.
WE HAVE NO IDEA.
Stop it please.
Basically what happened with other games is they said “feature x is coming soon”, then it didnt come out due to a delay and nerd rage ensued on the forums. SO Anet learnt from this and decided to just be tight lipped about everything in order to keep the nerd rage in check and protect the public image of the game and of the developers.
You see it here with all those who say they sold the game as esports and so lied. Alot moaning about lack of communication in this thread still moan about when they do communicate and dont deliver.
I think, however, that the forum going moaners/trolls (which there arent many on here – most here are cool imo) are actually a tiny minority. My personal view is that Anet and developers in general should just tell us what they are working on and why. They can say we are really close to this ladder system and this is how it will work.
I would love to know whats going on in this respect. But thats not the way the world works because they dont want the bad PR when things get delayed. Understandable and gamers have bought it on themselves by nerd raging all the time about “broken promises”. I think most gamers are mature enough to not nerd rage about changing timetables but I think Anet thinks the opposite or thinks it just not worth having to deal with the rage from delays.
Edit: and some of you really need to learn how to interact with people online, espicially devs. There is no reason to be rude in your communication with them. Sure you might get frustrated but remember they are human beings to, and just because the way you are communicating is over the internet it DOES NOT mean you can just be utterly rude and its acceptable.

The point is that this “lips tight shut” is hurting the game even more.
I already had a similar discussion in sataar thread , i’ll simply repost
I’m sorry , but you’re nowhere near to finding that balance.
it’s not about HOW MUCH you talk, it’s about HOW TRANSPARENT you are.
As players, we have literally no idea about what you’re doing, what are your plans for the future anf how are you going to realize them.
we have literally no idea
have you ever heard of social dilemmas ?
altough this is not properly the case, the psychological implications are pretty much the same.
the only difference is that while in social dilemmas, without informations about the common resource, ,people get mad and don’t care about the better way to use it, in this game, without informations, people just get mad and leave.
LEAVE.
your “customer care” marketing strategy is one of the most awful things I have ever seen.
at least it gives me hopes I’ll be good at my job (that is marketing, guess what).
if you really think you’re being trasparent enough, than I hope the small playerbase you’re going to hold with your terribad communication, will be at least profitable.
personally, I don’t know how long I’m going to last with this game. [/quote]
Consumer’s psychology aside, the point is that this “lips tight shut” phylosophy slowly making players to lose interest , it’s not even a problem of third-parts ( like ESL).
If they’re going to do an outreach program after implementing all the features, it’s fine.
But this outreach program is going to cost TONS of resources, due to the great amount of players who left due to lack of transparency, when it would have been really simplier to be more transparent about what they were doing.
Edit: and some of you really need to learn how to interact with people online, espicially devs. There is no reason to be rude in your communication with them. It’s totally legit for us to be angry with them.
They sponsored this game as " next gen best e-sport", tons of us got really serious about it, and we’re here after 7 months with absolutely no idea about what they’re going to do with the PvP part of the game.
We passed over the sneaky skill-locking change, we passed over the svanir runes-mace block bug and how awfully it was handled ( meanwhile my teammates left and i was left alone here with no interest about getting into a team again, due to lack of ladders and bad rewards), we passed over the sneaky hidden matchamking implementation and we passed over TONS OF OTHER STUFF i don’t even remember.
But we’re really getting kitten off, we are at our limit.

All.
This is an old interview conducted by GW2Guru and Jonathan Sharp / John Carpening.
A few interesting things.
1) Spectator Mode has been in the works since before the game was released. Yet we’re no closer to it now than we were before.
Q: “Do you have any plans in terms of PvP publicity? Will tournaments be advertised on the main webpage, or perhaps on the log-in screen?”
A: We can’t talk too much about this yet, but there are plans for things of this nature. I can say that we want to support the e-sport community, and we follow contemporary e-sports to learn from the example set by great companies supporting their communities.
Other notables:
-“we hope to see them (new players) move into tournament play with our automated tournament system and eventually to our scheduled tournaments where they can contend for a spot in our yearly tournament.”
Tyler, are there any plans for the Yearly tournament yet?
(edited by Defektive.7283)
Was it published on April fools’ day?
This may be a surprise, but players really don’t like surprises. We preffer being omnipotent and know everything. When you keep implementing new stuff without letting us know what’s going to the stuff you told us you were working earlier we get frustrated. We want to know even if it’s going hard/bad/whatever. Noone will criticize you if you say that it proved to be much harder then you thought. That might even get more appreciations from our end, cause we will know that you put a lot of effort into new features working. As long as they will be important features and not something silly.
Keep in touch with your community. For the good or the bad. That’s what brought people to your game in the first place. Trust me, you will get more new players into the game from current players who would recommend the game to their friends and not from good marketing.

transparency? the guild wars 2 pvp community does not need the devs to be transparent. really.
what is left of the guild wars 2 pvp community needs the devs to get their heads out of pee vee eee land and work bout as hard at pvp versatility and balance as the devs did in guild wars 1. who cares what they SAY, what do they DO?
I think they are very transparent. They aren’t doing a whole lot, so they aren’t “disclosing” a whole lot either.
Seems pretty consistent and transparent to me.

I love backhanded comments
The spvp of guild wars 2 is completely dead. 1v1 paids are taking 10+ minutes at times to pop and there is literally not 1 competitive active team playing on NA. I agree with coffee. Transparency is nice but its a little too late for that. Everyone’s already left.
It all boils down to funding. If pvp was important to anet they would put more resources into its development. Clearly that has not been done and at the current rate, it will be some time before the changes needed to make spvp flourish will be made. Ufortunately anet could/would not figure out how to make money from pvpers. Anet is a business and none of the people in power positions care about balance or game features. Those execs got their power by making money so that’s what they will continue to do. The devs are not the ones to blame. The guy sitting in a $5,000 plush bolted leather chair is the one to blame. They are sitting in meetings reviewing quarterly profit margins on xcel spread sheets and pvp is in column z. Don’t expect anything to change anytime soon.
