Why can't dueling be free?
Also, does anyone have any idea on how much it will cost of what currency?
Its gonna cost gems. And it’s good that it costs gems.
The CA’s costing gems opens up room for money making in spvp: imagine you rent an arena, if it gets popular and a of people use it you can put up a message that says “support me with gold so i can buy time tokens!” and then you can keep the profit for yourself. Also, it will make spvp profitable and worth putting resourses into, and (atleast i hope so) it will increase spvp developing speed.

Well, if that turns out to be true, then I will have lost a lot of respect for the guild wars 2 team. I very much hope that you are wrong.
they are gona cost gems and why? becouse for anet you are a cow and you need to be milked

why? you people just dont get it. if everyone just had a custom arena, there would be like 100000000000000000 available custom servers with weird rules and no one would put an effort into making a decent custom arena, plus custom arenas would rarely be full leading to boring matches and lack of interesting games to spectate. you guys just want everything handed to you on a plate.
and please don’t come with the “LoL has free CAs” argument, because you cant compares the cash shop LoL has with the Cash shop of gw2. LoL is far more a profitable game and can afford not carging money for CAs.

also, i hope no one makes Duel custom arenas, such a waste.
Well, this is a game changer for me. I’ve been looking forward to this since launch. If it costs real money, then I’m probably out of guild wars 2. I enjoy the game they have so far, but if they are changing their philosophy from fun to greed, then I can’t stay. I will stay long enough to see if you both are right or wrong and to see if the GW2 team take this feedback seriously. But I’m really concerned at the moment.

Yeah, I am sure ArenaNet can live off virtual currency with no real value.

I payed for the game. If they want more money, they should make an expansion, not sell a fun part of the game that they have held out from us with a subscription.
lol these people always come up with LOL how about all the other games in the world? you paid 60 bucks and now you have to pay more to be able to have your own room? open your eyes please

Couple things wrong I disagree with in your statement.
- Sure, there may be a lot of servers created, but those in use will be substantially less for the exact reason that their current arenas dont have an even low distribution among them: People will join arenas with other people regardless of if its their own or not. No one is going to create an arena and then sit in it hoping people join, they gain nothing from that.
- You fear there will be a lack of interesting games to spectate, however the most interesting games will be games that are tournaments and have purpose to them. Those arenas will be locked so that you cannot spectate anyway. And on servers with high amounts of players chances are good that because spectators count towards the arena population cap that few people will actually spectate random custom arenas.
- Why can people not make the argument that because another game has free custom arenas that this game should not also follow suite? Both games make money from micro transactions and GW2 has the added income from the fact that you have to purchase the game in order play in the first place. The argument that LoL is much more profitable could be attributed to the fact that players arent nickel and dimed in order to have an enjoyable pvp experience.

“Greed” philosophy? CAs cost resources to maintain, costed resources to develop, everything in the world must pay itself, can’t you understand that? Plus, you can’t deny the problems i mention that would come if CAs were free. Please, again, get your head out of your kitten But please, be my guest, quit because there isnt dueling (rofl).

Not enough gold.
i imagine how an RTS player would feel if after buying the game he realise that he has to pay a bit more to make his own room to play agaist/with a friend and not joining a public one.

CA’s are more like renting dedicated servers in shooter games which is rarely free unless the game allows you to host a server on your own computer.
Afaik the custom games in LoL(And i guess SC2) is just a temporary game and not something that stays up even tho it’s empty?

Your problems about CA’s being free are unfounded as I pointed out so I will deny it. Not to mention that CAs are intended to replace their current free arenas in their entirety. They will cost ArenaNet negligible amounts of money compared to their current system. That infrastructure already existed and development was supposedly started before they were released in the first place. Based on Anets own philosophy we should not have to pay for new content, it should be expected. Why is this case different?
In my personal opinion I support either charging for the arena setup without then having to rent it to use the arena you created or charging you 100 gems to create an arena for a day and not have to pay this upfront cost that could be made to work. However to charge you for both screen cash grab. Its the equivalent to purchasing a new house in full, then having to pay rent to live there anyway.

what? skins cost rp (only obtainable through money), ip boosters cost rp (ip is a pain to obtain, it takes like a month of casual playing to get a full rune set, let alone runesets for more than 1 role), runepages cost rp(!!!! you are limited to 2 roles basically before you buy more, and they cost as much as a champ skin)… the “nickeling and diming” in LoL is so much greater than in gw2.
You may be kind of right in point #1, but you cant know if point #2 will happen. and you can’t definetly deny the moneymaking possibilities that CAs bring to the spvp side of the game.

Skins, boosters, ext… things that are unnecessary to play is not the same as forcing you to pay to create a place to play in. Imagine that during this beta these top 50 players lock their arena and only let their personal friends play. If they get rid of their free arenas as is the intention, where are those players to play? They are forced then to pay in order to play pvp in a game they already paid money to aquire.
Yes, this will be a huge money maker… thats the point, and thats the problem. $15/month fees were huge money makers too for MMOs.

I just wanted to duel with my brother and play private games with my friends IRL. It’s looking like Arenanet won’t let me do that without paying extra money. I’m legitimately disappointed.
Facts:
- MMOs cost tons of money to upkeep
- Most MMOs ameliorate those costs with subscription fees
- GW2 doesn’t have a subscription fee
- GW2 needs to make money to keep themselves afloat as a company and keep the servers running
- GW2 uses microtransactions to ameliorate those costs
There is nothing greedy here. Custom arenas are not required for you to enjoy the game, and if they are because you can’t live without them for whatever reason, well just join someone else’s! Playing in them is free, it’s hosting your own that costs gems. Seriously, this is a perfectly legitimate setup ANet has going on, and there’s nothing shady or greed-driven about it.
Consider the alternative: you play another MMO that has a subscription fee but free custom arenas. Great, you and every one of your friends pay $15 a month to play, and you get to play with each other in your arenas for free. Let’s say you have 5 friends. That means in one month, the company has made $75 from you and your friends playing in a custom arena. It sure as hell won’t cost you $75 to open and maintain that same custom arena on GW2 for a month, so in the end you’re paying less. What’s the complaint, again?

Forcing a player to purchase an item, then in addition having to pay to use it is pretty greed-driven.
As I said earlier a system where you purchase an arena and have full use for a flat fee, or a system where you purely buy time tokens to create an arena is a much better setup that still covers the companies cost to upkeep their servers without double charging the customer. Granted – if the arena cost is exactly equal or cheaper then 1 month of tokens then I am ok with this, but without information on pricing I will remain skeptical that this isnt an attempt to grab as much money as possible.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
Just join someone else’s dueling server and duel him there. There are going to be like 10 billion duel servers once the general public gets access to custom arenas. It only costs money to own a custom arena, not play in one. What’s the problem?

You get a free month when you buy the arena….and anyone can add time to your server with the tokens. If this guy and his brother get a nice dueling server going I imagine he’d meet lots of nice people who would be glad to contribute to keep it going.

In addition, we know it will be “way cheaper” than 200 gems for a monthly token (Colin confirmed this awhile back). Furthermore, remember that gems can be acquired in-game without paying any RL money. I imagine if you and your pals have your own private custom arena, your pals can send you 1g a month and help pay for the monthly costs.
I think they cost something like 200 gems (From their leaked screenshot)? Which is like 6g… If you can’t spend the time to get 6g it’s really not Anet’s fault. Myself, I’ll gladly pay Anet for the privilege to make a custom arena.

If it ends up being cheep enough to cover with in-game money i will be pretty happy. I don’t have the time to do much farming, so 6g a month may be too much, (that’s 2x all my money) but if they can make it as cheep as possible, I may not feel obliged to leave the game.

This is just another case of anet treating their pvpers like second class citizens by charging them for basic features while pve’ers actually enjoy their buy to play game. Anet, and other game devs, are going to continue treating pvpers like they are worth less than pve’ers until pvpers like you stop making it easy for them.

You don’t have to. You can play SPvP and TPvP without ever using a custom arena, and you can play in anyone else’s custom arena without paying a dime. If you want to choose your own rules and host your own arena, then it costs you. That’s very reasonable, and definitely not pay-to-play.

You are not paying for PvP content! You are paying for the ability to CREATE the PvP content. Playing on anyone’s arena is still free. Playing tournaments is still free. Where are you guys getting this idea that PvP now costs money?
They added a new feature. This new feature costs money to access, and is a specialty item. Playing the game exactly as you have been playing it up to this point still costs 0 extra dollars. What is the problem here?

Basically you’re saying that the ability to play PvP depends on the largesse of other players who are paying for it.
Basically you’re saying that the ability to play PvP depends on the largesse of other players who are paying for it.
No, I didn’t say that.
However, you’re correct in that it could be an issue. But if that’s something that you are concerned about, all you need to do is take a look at any other multiplayer game with dedicated servers. There are hundreds of them and the players or clans are happy to keep them running.
Also, the 5v5 tournaments will still be around for free (from what I hear the 8v8 hotjoins will be replaced by arenas). So I disagree that relying on the kindness of others in this case is a problem.

Oh u have to press this buttom sir and it will charge u 10$
but i just wana see different stuff
And with the gold thingy yeah you are rigth and all but … there is no gold in pvp !
See, the thing that gets me is this: No other feature of Guild War 2 has a cost restriction other than the actual game itself. This is breaking away from what the game promoted itself as.
Once they add features for a premium, they’ll add more. If they don’t add more, then sPvP CAs will be the black sheep of services.

There are plenty of things in GW2 with cost restrictions, take a look at the stuff in the Gem Store. Black lion chests and keys to get unique and rare skins, black lion salvage kits so you’re guaranteed to get your rune back, on and on and on. Owning your own custom arena is like one of these things – a nice side feature, but it doesn’t prevent you from playing the game or give you some kind of advantage.
Once they start charging us $5 to enter the mists, you’ll be right.

I went to go get lunch so I am behind but I have to respond to this. Tokens add a single DAY, not a month. So 5 guys who give 1 gold a month is 1.66 days, not months.

I went to go get lunch so I am behind but I have to respond to this. Tokens add a single DAY, not a month. So 5 guys who give 1 gold a month is 1.66 days, not months.
You are correct, I concede the point.
lettu is not a matter of gold or gems im pretty sure that every1 that bougth guild wars 2 is able to afford a custom arena on their own is about the thing that they are not adding anything new and they are charging you for that.
See, the thing that gets me is this: No other feature of Guild War 2 has a cost restriction other than the actual game itself.
Features.
The BLTC Gem Store is a service that was understood to be a cash shop service. No feature of the game (feature as in, aspect of the game that is available to play) costs money to take part in.
If they charged for entering WvW, this would make more sense. If they charged per Dungeon, this would be rational. If they had previously asked for a small gem fee to partake in a day of sPvP, I could understand this. But they didn’t and they don’t.
All of the things you listed are items of cosmetic or little necessary value. They do not restrict or empower and are purely for convenience. Custom Arenas, however, are attempting to replace HotJoin in an effort to push people into Tournaments. Tournaments that, as they are currently, throw you against organized teams more often than not and supported by a Leaderboard that’s not maintained properly.
