Why did/does Anet think one game mode was a good idea?
Let me start by saying Capture the Nodes game modes are always my least favorite in any MMO. I have never found much appeal in them but that being said, I’m okay with playing this game mode occasionally. I feel like GW2 was sokittenclose to PvP greatness but fell short in parts that should have been obvious- like not launching the game with only one sPvP game mode. Even if you factor in WvW… you are still doing the samekittenthing, but at least in WvW it makes sense and on that large scale I’ve actually found some fun to be had. I highly doubt I’m the only one that feels this way but maybe I feel it more so because I mostly despise this game mode. I would have loved to see some CTF. I’d even welcome Payload or HUTTBALL (one could only dream; the only good thing to come out of SWTOR). Of course something like small teams last man standing seems to always be out of the question (though it’s my absolute favorite). Am I just a stupid idiot that has no idea what I’m talking about? Do you agree with me?
Because Guild Wars 2 aims to enter the e-sports scene, as far as I’m aware.
Because of this, only one game mode is needed currently, as new game modes would make balancing twice as hard.
I wouldn’t be against new game modes showing up, but I will be against it if they hold any rewards at all besides the fun of playing them.
As such, their top priority right now is making custom servers, and a spectator mode, as far as I know.

because firstly anet though about pve, which attract the basement of the community, then they will focus on pvp that it relatively smaller as community than pve’s community.
i repeat always : wait till 1/10/12, they will fix pvp. trust me :S

Wait until over 8 months ago?
What?

game released officually 28/08/12 today is not even a month passed since release. i repeat wait till first of november at least.
hmm i usually put dd/mm/yy.
There’s going to be a major blog post done in the coming days explaining the future plans with SPvP.
Looking for a good guild for PoF
No, that’s why they stated several times they’re adding more.

There’s your proof.

But yes, adding more game types would probably make balancing between classes a tad harder.

Forums were culled, so I can’t give proof.
Sorry.

No they didn’t and there won’t be any game modes in the next months to come, what will be there is of course the “soon everything will be better” blogpost that apparently takes about 100h of workload to write up.
Actually they did, it was during BWE2.
Also if I remember correctly they said they’re releasing conquest first to see how the system works and adding more modes.

Are you trying to suggest that they should actually have some proof of content in the works to show us? They’ve still got some way to go on bug tackling and I don’t expect them to prioritize content so close to launch (at least to the point of showing us product, which keep in mind has to be near final before they can do so.)
They need to bring back Random and Team Arenas. Imagine how much better they’ll play now without monks ruining everything
“meta game” without ranked matches? not going to happen
Hasn’t this been talked about in enough threads already? I’m pretty sure they get the fact that some people don’t like the current setup being the only option.
29 days.
Bug stickies on every class forum.
Generally testing the balance between all classes in the meta-game.
All the bugs in other aspects of the game in general.Yeah……it’s probably not too high on their list.
Sorry for wasting a thread. The forum gods will not be pleased.
I think the more that people show Anet what they like or don’t like can help determine what exactly is or isn’t priority. So no I don’t think this has been talked about enough and I do think it should be high on their “content” priority list. Bug fixes won’t ever stop, there will always be another bug to squash, even when we see a content patch I guarantee bug fixes will be included in that.
Still, a lot of the player complaints are not valid complaints. They’re just gripes.
Wanting to nerf x y an z jobs because they’re popular in sPvP – when counter builds exist and are already increasing in use (Noticing a rise in condition/AoE builds lately to counter memsers and thieves. Makes me happy even if I am getting hard countered occasionally.)
Right now I’d say sPvP is in its infantcy. They’ve got a lot to fix before they build more. Though I personally would love to see how a traditional MOBA style objective would work in this game. Though it would likely be quicker given the fact that there likely wouldn’t be a progression system tied to it. (or maybe there could be.)
But could you imagine a MOBA style raid and destroy in an over the shoulder perspective? That could be interesting.
Anyways, no rush, as always.
But where’s the “new game-modes” bit?
Is that not proof enough? Are you really worried that they’re going to give us one game mode? After having a successful game such as GW1, which had numerous game modes for pvp, they wouldn’t give us only one for GW2. Also when GW1 launched they only had one game mode for pvp also.

I’m not really seeing how the post you linked tells me anything about new game modes.
Also, I’m not worried about them only giving us one game mode.
I’m worried about them adding more game modes.
That’s why I’m curious.
All that post tells me is that they’re implementing spectator modes, and custom tournies.

No it says there’s going to be a huge blog post pertaining to the future of spvp.

Honestly, one game mode is fine. Just so long its a good game mode. Capture the flags really isn’t a good game mode. If you tried to have more than one game mode, the others become stale and boring because you can’t possibly balance for any more than just one game mode.
I am pretty sure i know why they do that.
-Guild wars 2 lack healers:
3 people focus one person definately dead
-Capture Points and Objectives encourage teams to split.
Battle of khailo
5 players have to choose where to go:
3 CP
2 OB
Best choice is to split and not zerg.
Another way they try to encourage spliting is:
1 man CPing a poing will take the same with five ppl
Did you get what i mean?
well think about other modes:
- King of the Hill: One objectiv, very boring to watch.
- Capture the flag: Would only encourage speed.
- Escort and back-and-forth capture points: Would encourage heavy defensive skills.
- Team Deathmatch: Would be pretty good, but lacks depth and objectives.
The current format encourages speed, attack and defense, while shaking things up with 2 mini bosses (Niflhel).
I really like the current mode, but half the maps are just bad!
I didn’t play during my beta weekends partially hoping they wouldn’t release with just this format, but they did. So kitten frustrating.

You give people more game modes to play you can make more people happy. I think I’ve played sPvP maybe 5-8 times since launch of GW2. For you it maybe the best thing ever but for others (like me) it’s dreadfully boring. By the way who says King of the Hill is boring to watch? You? You know maybe I’d think it’s boring to watch too, but I’d also think the current game mode is boring to watch as well.

Why did/does Anet think one game mode was a good idea?
in PvP

They apparently tested and found these mode promoted the most fun/strategic game play apprently.
I want a teamdeathmatch as much as anyone else though it does raise issues with is it fight until defeated? Do any classes get the short end of the stick if it’s done this way? What mechanism will promote people to bash heads together (like Bloodline Champions rune of power, death fog)
League of Legends and Dota both have one game mode are both highly prolific esports worth millions of dollars of prize money.
There was a post I saw on the LoL forums by one of the devs that I wish I could dig up regarding PvP in GW1.
Basically, he pointed out that the biggest problem with GW1 PvP was that there were too many game modes to encourage players to find the full depth of any single one; therefore, no game mode ever reached its full potential. While I don’t have enough GW1 PvP experience to validate that, I still think it’s a valid concern that Anet will have to consider before adding too many modes.
Pretty much the three game modes in GW1 were equally as good (ha was a little gimmicky at times and I really didn’t go in there much). The fourth (Alliance Battles) was the only one that wasn’t that great. Alliance battles was very similar to the one we are playing now. I’d say I spent 24 hours or less playing that game mode, while I have thousands in the others.
They carried over the least popular one (not just by my hours, but by many people who played the game). Along with others who think this is one of the worst formats for mmo’s (there’s another post on the first page from a daoc player).

I’m just wondering… who did they test these game modes with? What other game modes were tested? Maybe they should have tested on a larger scale.

Dev or not, this is just one persons opinion- maybe the problem was the game and the game modes didn’t appeal to enough people so no one cared? Besides I really can’t imagine a standalone Guildswars 2 sPvP game being released and having anywhere near the success as Dota or LoL. Sure maybe I’m not judging fairly because I don’t like sPvP in GW2 but there just isn’t enough depth there.

Starcraft has dozens and maps and that’s a highly prolific E-Sport too! Yea, see how stupid that argument is? Besides, LoL has 4 game modes (SR, TT, Dominion, ARAM/Proving Grounds).
Its not about E-Sports or balance. Conquest is boring; one game mode is boring; sPvP, right now, is boring
