Q:

I mean, can someone explain to me the reason to have Leagues if players from different Leagues can play in the same match?

Are Leagues not supposed to be a system to split players into different skill levels (leagues) in order to match them together?? And not with players of other skill levels (other leagues)??

I do not f@kng understand!!

Leagues are there to (1) say that we have leagues, (2) give shiny rewards, and (3) allow premades to stomp solo queuers even better.

Possibly (4) to make it even more obvious how messed up matchmaking is.

Such depth, such explanation, the grandeur lacing of intricate vocabulary and grammar. Explications of your deep thought regarding the topic of the matter. Wow.

Jokes aside. To promote PvP competition, E-Sports? Grouping of similar skilled players in order to achieve equality in skill levels within a given match. But according to the forums, it seems matchmaking is terrible so that kind of defeats the purpose.

Except they want to reset divisions at the start of each season so we’ll have the same problems again and again if they don’t change anything.

Surely they dont need to fix MMR they just need to disable it? Having both leagues and MMR active is like having two different MMR systems that contradict each other active at the same time. League divisions themselves are a form of MMR because by using purely random matchmaking they will sort players into their appropriate divisions and you arrange matches by grouping players within the same division or instead to avoid queue times have pips awarded based on divisions.

OK let me clear some misunderstanding here. Dota has over 10 years of presence in internet. They wasted years and years on developing the heroes, leagues and tournaments along the way was made from players. Not the opposite they never stopped evolving around classes and abilities. What Anet does is the opposite they stopped evolving and working around classes and pushing Esports.Match making ingame should not be done INGAME by 1 button press,it will never work.Best way i experienced matchmaking was in old Starcraft – Warcraft and after it Dota players made websites.Where players registered where put in bronze league, matches where organized like this. Each group formed team or solo, was divided solo league and team.No matter rank team or solo could challenge anybody to a game.Hell i even played back then against so called Pro gamers and had my wins and losses. Each party made a date-time out when to play. Each team won or loss got some points and advanced trough ladder.Nobody could lie or fake tournaments like they are done today,or setup abuse ladder systems online like its done. That was a community project and fair for anybody. And it was not done by a gaming company!Gaming company should focus on Making their game work!Seems people kinda messed their priority here, watching that feels like i am in a twilight zone.

I was feeling a bit screw-loose so I…checked myself in.

MMR Algorithm is something completely different to Leagues right now. The system puts players together in a match using the matchmaking algorithm and right now, it has nothing to do with Leagues.

So my point is: Why do we have Leagues? for me they are completely meaningless as they are right now.

MMR and Leagues should go together hand by hand, so that the Algorithm only works choosing players from the same League!!

I had the exact same question, and have been a bit disappointed in the current League matchmaking system. I thought Leagues would provide a more quality match rather than quantity found in unranked. And I believe there lies the problem.

In order to avoid long matchmaking times in Leagues, ANet went with a system that promotes quantity matchmaking over quality matchmaking. However, I don’t believe that’s how it should work. Leagues are designed as a competition. This competition is to determine who the best players are. Thus, Leagues should emphasize quality matches in order to determine who the best players are.

I think that one step towards getting more quality matches is to make it so that only the members of a Division can fight members of the same Division. For instance, only Amber Division players will be matchmade against Amber Division players. And I’m not sure how that will affect teams that are composed of players of different Divisions, but that might just be more reason to develop a Solo Queue League.

assign every division a value, sum up the total from each player queued up in a team then divide by the team to get their average… that’s their current division ranking.

allow players to have a 70% chance of matching against someone in their division, 14.9% of 1 division up, 14.9% chance of matching against someone 1 division below, 0.2% that you fight someone way below or above who you should be fighting

Toss leagues, they are not ready.

We got severe unbalance (Revenants have the highest DPS yet are allowed to be tanky), bugs (stuck bug), visual bugs (enough said) and an exploited team system allowing top teams to take up as many top slots as they want.

Bring back Leagues when PvP is ready.

TL;DR: Yes, your logic is sound. Leagues should be a division (heh, the word division is even explicitly used by ArenaNet to define these boundaries). But as implemented it’s purpose is to be a merit badge system. The little icon beside your name in Heart of the Mist is meant to shame you or to show off your prestige and that “rank” is all about your individual League rank in a game that’s suppose to be all about team play. Doesn’t that just make perfect sense? They designed it this way to make casual types feel inferior and want to play 24/7. Every design derision in HoT from Raids to Legendary crafting is about making Guild Wars 2 a game all about hard core play and isolating casual types and making them feel worthless if they don’t play more, which of course is really all about spending more as they have the data and know those who play more spend more in the GEM store.

Now the long verson
The stated reasoning behind the League system was to “provide new progression path in PvP” and to “make sPvP more inviting to casual players”. Originally when they talked about Leagues it seemed rank would be something for the organized guild teams and all about guild teams not the individual. Had that implementation gone though or had they added a solo queue that would have made sense. As implemented the only

Instead they decided to make League divisions all about the individual (once again) showing ArenaNet does not seem to understand Conquest and Stronghold are TEAM sports and that rank within any League for team sports should represent the rank of a team not an individual. Solo queues should have their own progression path and ranks. This not only makes perfect sense it is critical and anything else is asinine. It comes down to the basics of solo sports vs team sports and the limitations in which metrics can be applied, etc..

As implemented there are an array of problems. From MMR matching mucking things up to premades going against solo queue all the time. It’s complete trash as implemented and players are now purposely loosing consecuative in Emerald to bring down their MMR low enough to be paired against easier teams (see recent reddit postings on this).

Shameless plug
If you enjoy GW2 sPvP, Blizzard’s Heros of the Storm may interest you. It’s competitive team play gaming. It’s nice addition to GW2 sPvP but once you see how well a game can be balanced and how well a game studio can really take care of their base you may decide to play it quite a bit more until ArenaNet sorts this League mess out.

Perfect answer as always Sam

(TL;DR: split Leagues between SoloQ and TeamQ)

I have seen Heros of the Storm and I like it but it does not have the dynamic of the character control, they are just cards, or seems like that to me.

As an additional note I want to say that I am very happy that I didn’t buy HoT. I did not do it cause I consider they do not deserve it for the work they have done in the last 2 years in PvP and I continue thinking they don’t deserve it yet.
