Why gw2 will never make it to esports
I enjoy watching it
/shrug
#1: Guild wars 2 is not readily understood by viewers, nor is it easy to watch.
This is a big once, since I think this is what holds nearly all games from being a viable form of entertainment. When you think about sports, usually the camera is focused on the action using elevated or a steady dynamic angle, which lets players be in full and clear view while action takes place. Think boxing, basketball, soccer, foot ball, MMA… notice how you know exactly what is going on at all times? Yeah, that is important to the industry as a whole.
But GW2 has a back-camera perspective, which means that for anyone but the player it is jarring and confusing mess where more than half of the action happens off-screen. Otherwise, the camera is zoomed out to such a degree that all you can see are spell effects from tiny avatars in the distance. You never know who to follow, since in a team of 5 vs. 5 there are 10 different perspectives, with broadcasters viewing from the perspectives of random players, hoping to get the action on screen.
The end result? The critical points of the match is are done by players who are invisible to the audience, and the players that are visible are watching from a perspective that is whipping around, spamming effects trying to find nigh invisible players. There is nothing to engage the audience, so the viewership is limited to a few enthusiasts who are so experienced they know what is going on without seeing it.
#2: Paper/rock/scissors style gameplay. Either you have enough condi cleanses to deal with condi spam, or you do not. Either you have enough breakers to deal with stun warriors, or you don’t. Either you have enough AoE to deal with minions, or you don’t. Either you have enough bulk to survive burst, or you don’t.
So much of the PVP in the game is based around resources you need to invest your skills/traits into to beat other strategies, and these strategies are usually low maintenance and easy to pull off. This is not that interesting to watch or competitive, because the entirety of combat boils down to a flashy and highly rendered game of paper/rock/scissors.
Those are my two big ones.
GW has the potential in every aspect. The problem with watching is easily solved by a high quality observe system, not the joke we have now. Everything else I easily solved by balancing and overhauling but the only problem that seriously cripples gw from becoming an esport is the lack of attention and development.
Since the dev team designs maps that are the direct opposite of what people want in e sports:
Look at skyhammer for example. One of the worst maps in the history of competetive gaming.

There’s been lots of esports games with poorly designed maps, but usually a few make it to the most played list. Nobody plays Skyhammer in tournies, do they?
I love the streams (teldo, ostricheggs, five gauge). If a tournament is going on I love for Blu for presenting top games on a top entertaining level.
but despite all these compains, gw2 still comes as top choice for mmo pvp in online discussions

Its not even remotely close to being as popular as wow pvp atm. The active pvp community is probs not even 10% of that in wow…..and thats with a wow season that is arguably the worst in the history of the game.
I wish it was diffferent…i really do.

What he said
Because esport is stupid and for some reason all bad games have lot’s of viewers.

popular != good or top choice
if popularity were a guide, we would be all playing heartstone
I tried wow again couple of weeks ago. I’m pvp only both here and there. It wasn’t bad. And two combats are quite different. faster speed, combo fields, insta blinds, dodges and certainly visuals kept me back to gw2.
Talk about beating a dead horse :P

Another thing: reduce visual effects.
You know why skilled gameplay is enjoyable? Because it’s deeper and more around mindgames.
Now, adding clutter/reducing visibility makes achieving that result harder. But this difficulty cannot be overcome by thinking or devising a strategy. It can just be overcome with habit. Maybe.
And a difficulty that is overcome with habit is called artificial difficulty. Similar to those games where to play well you are forced to go trial and error.
And is wrong.

I would really like to see a 8v8 deathmatch. With morale boost with flag capture. As for an esports: Why does everyone even want that? Whatever happened to just bragging rights of who just kitten stomped your face? Greed?

Any gaming company wants esports because more recognition = more revenue.
Spectating someone in first person is way better then the current top down view. Even a third person option would be better.
Only having conquest mode is also a huge detriment.
The problem is the number of streamers is rapidly fading.
Example: when warriors were weaker we had Defektive and Tarcis streaming for the class. By june, july they stopped streamer, and I haven’t found any other guy streaming warrior gameplay.

I would argue the learning curve is quite high, particularly for viewers (who are not necessarily players).
I’ve only just switched to pvp from wvw – the first time I tried pvp I had no idea what was going on. I’ve learned the game in wvw and only now switched over (and I’m loving it).

Watching some high level stream, I’m starting to realize there might not be much of a learning curve.
Example: downed state. If you are ressing an ally that is being stomped, the difference between a ress and a kill is of a split second. The smallest problem, the smallest distance between you and the ally, and you might not make it.
And even then, reading the enemy is hard and doesn’t feel that rewarding, in the mess of a battle. IMHO, obviously.
Some might say that clutter and reduction of readability adds difficulty to the game, but it might make it so difficult no one is able to play it and no one can make beautiful plays. So it all ends up in a spam fest.

My 2 cents is the matches rarely have good turns arounds if someone secures 2 buffs they slowly get a bigger and bigger lead and eventually win….thats easy to understand because you acn see the caps and score but its boring….i think again I hate refering to this but its the best example, league of legends, even if one team is getting dominated if they win a late game team fight they can turn around and PUNISH the enemy team. In this game winning a team fight yea i guess its nice but they are already 200 points down and the enemy team can just bunker 1 point to win anyway kinda thing.
What I want to see for me personally is a system where late game the losing team in any span of say 20 seconds has a real chance of coming back….heres one thought i had.
What if on forest of niflhel every 5 minutes the announcer says npc buffs are now harder to kill but worth double the points aka 50 points….5 minutes later again NPC buffs now doubled again! making it 100 points….thoughts? The scoring system over the course of the match NEEDS to change….

Yeh I think spamfest is the right word. Very hard for an observer to know what’s going on.

The problem of PvP is ALWAYS THE SAME !
Explanation!
Why not walk gw2 tip top in PvP and even less competitive.
Simple answer : There are no competitions
Further response :
Gw2 not what another great PvP games like SC2 or LoL dota2 major fps have is the gratitude, recognition.moba or sc eg all problems of balance, the game mode is to the base as you not specially made for esports , the competitions , but there are come because they have made ??sure that the best reward for the players is the recognition of games! sois same and players around you ! This requires the competitions.
Its mean to start a ladder !
But you are the only games I see that make a ladder of a games team classes but not by team players ! Simply put it is as if there was a ranking based on league 1 players and not on the team ?
It should not shock you her ?
Then tournaments !
Tournaments when I say I do not necessarily think in tournaments to cash huge but simple tournaments players to measure them on scale with several awards at the key!
But there is not even organize tournaments for you 0 (aside your invitational tournaments )
from a PvP player can not distinguish this !
because as there 0 point level competitions we are all the same, give rewards is useless if behind these rewards are not worthy !
To improve the rewards must be jumps in to add to level competitions that reward value is true .
EX : Monthly tournaments in January, the winner of the skin only weapon in January , with the title ( monthly champions in January ) (Example idiot )
In the ladder the team who are in the top 25 have their name in gold, or that have a cape or anything but plz that what distinguishes it is the recognition of the work done is play !
Made her and then you can move on to more important competitions such as Eu or global tournaments with even greater rewards!
but since the end of your tournaments , we had nothing in PvP except the shift of December !
The current situation is extremely serious PvP is you wake up ( maybe) now !
I supported you for me a crazy time because as beacoup people that I know a esport games do not necessarily have to be in its infancy , and the fact that you put private servers or user shoutcast for your shoutcaster were great ideas ! But where is the rest , or are the basis of the competition !
As this will not be implemented , PvP will never be a success! ( And I mean not even additions like other games or other mode )
i think that this post will not really be transmitted in the high court, but either ! Should its kind xD
sorry for trad(google trad)

Gw2 pvp isn’t free to play so no esports. There aren’t enough players.
I would be nice if the game works in the first place before mentioning all reasons above ^^
E.A.D.
It’s not popular.
1. Company does not focus on PvP side of the game.
2. Encounters are too fast with too much clusterkitten effects, which makes it horrible to spectate.
3. Skills and mechanics with little to none counterplay (condi immunities, instant condispam a.k.a signet of spite and many, many others)
You just can’t take this game seriously.

Your dissatisfaction is exactly what Temple of the Silent Storm and Spirit Watch attempt to address. And there are still Lord kills on Legacy of the Foefire.
I thought the whole esports thing was pretty much off the table by now? With the new goal now being making the game enjoyable for as many players as possible first?
Attachments:
This game has mostly condition and bunker builds, there’s nothing fun in either.
It doesnt make a-net money
The goal now is to get as many pve players as possible to spvp so the playerbase doesn’t reach the point of no return and spvp dies. In that effort we have new rewards that can be used in pve and achievements. And it sort of worked, we have more playerbase, pve players grinding pvp so the quality of matches is way worst, but atleast spvp is not dead.
They’ve also understood that there is no point in dumping more money or balance into spvp, so i don’t expect any new modes or big balance patches.
And the esports thing, it wasn’t that bad, they sold copies for the esport thing, and lots of people had their moment of glory, until they realized that their viewership was ridiculously low and the glory was just an ilusion.
The game needs a massive player base for esport to have a chance to work.
Most viewers are players that want to see how the pros play and need to be players to understand what they are doing.
To have a massive player base the entry game – hot join has to be fun and FREE.
If they made hot join entirely free a percentage would go on to pay for competition and pve.
