Why is this happening?
I’ve actually had a similar circumstance happen to me. Climbed from my initial rating to about 1720, maintaining a 60-70% win rate (consistent with my lifetime account win rating, nothing new), and since then have experienced nothing but sheer losses and anecdotally worse teammate pairings then when I was climbing.
From my perspective it appears as though the game has readjusted my win rate to a 50% rate for the season with an incredibly heavy hand, and my sodium levels want me to say that my teammates were too heavy to carry.

You might just be caught up in a really unlucky streak.
Also losing streak make you mad, and you will, in general, perform worse with that mindset.
I would suggest you team up with some one who you know is decent to change things up a bit.
It’s just their matchmaking. If you win 2 in a row you lose 2, win 3, lose 3 etc. If you have good luck with teams in placement you’ll have fun. If you don’t, no fun for you.
I don’t want to sound like a guru or anything but If I had such a hard losing streak like this then I’d take a break for a few hours and do something else to clear my mind. Then try again.

I don’t know about the OPs, but mine were gradual matches, as well as “queue staggering” (adding people I wouldn’t want to match with again at that time and waiting for them to end up in a match again before queuing while they were in a match).
Granted, we’ve never had an actual visible MMR system and the league system without backward progress was a really poor indicator, but I haven’t personally gone on a ranked loss streak like I have in the past 2 days in the past 4 seasons (and I’m sure farther back than that) of GW2.
I know better than to post in these sorts of threads normally because 99% of the time, Evan Lesh shows up and brings his stats with him and lets people know it was a bad luck streak.
But after so much PvP, not just over the seasons but over the years of GW2, to have such an abnormal experience, I’d just want to be reassured that it is in fact bad luck, because to never have had such an experience (within recent memory anyhow) until the new system is in place is very coincidental.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m just here to provide system feedback so that if somehow something actually did go awry (doubtful but still), it can be taken into consideration for future adjustments.

I think the biggest problem is the small pvp population and the lack of dedicated and skilled players. The majority probably hasn’t even done their placement matches yet and when they do, they’ll be focusing on the ascended gear and then leave.
Most people don’t play pvp anymore to have fun and compete, because frankly, it’s not as fun as it used to be with all the HoT clusterkitten. I also know a lot of PvE players that simply hate conquest and would love to have a King of the hill mode, elimination, free for all, yet Arenanet doesn’t deliver.
Long story short: If you lack the players that want to compete, the matchmaking will be bad.
