Anet underestimated exactly how many people want this. It’s been asked since launch… we’ve asked for lessor things like TDM and they’ve obliged. Yet we haven’t gotten 1v1/2v2 gamemodes because,
“You can do that in Custom Matchmaking”
and
“It will add too many game modes.”

Yea.. because no other mmorpg has more than 2 gamemodes like GW2?

1) We want these leaderboards.
Not just gamemodes. The old ladder system would have been perfect for 1v1 and 2v2. It would have ran itself without Justin needing to stand behind the currtain moderating matchmacking.
(Sorry Justin you’re not needed!)

All the QQ’s would be about cheesy builds like condi or high perma stealths classes like mesmers and thieves.
You could add certain objets within the map like a small capture point (similiar to stillness) that enables visibility in that area for X amout of time.
Add a mini ‘rain cloud’ that when enabled, it’ll rain or cleanse conditions on you for X amount of time

It’s not hard setting up a fair and fun gamemode. If Devs need input in this area we’ll be more than happy to help.

2) People dont like dueling servers for a plethora of reasons. The ones people like to join are full, other dueling servers can be filled with trolls and there can be a lack of player diversity like having 10 thieves in one room, etc. Dueling servers will still be there for people needing to practice.

Obviously people still duel because that’s how much we like it. Obviously there are even more people who don’t, because of the above reasons. It’s not going to hurt Conquest or Stronghold’s matchmaking. It’ll bring more people who quit a year ago back into the game due to having a more diversified PvP system.

Custom arenas is =/= a solution to the lack of these very essential PvP game modes.

It’s a placebo for a drug we desperately want!!!!

lol except this game is completely unbalanced for 1v1 and there’s nothing Anet could do about it. Balancing it for 1v1s would ruin it. What a terrible idea.

And you’ve underestimated how bad an idea a ranked 1v1 game mode would be. Every time this is brought up in discussion on the forums, people have stated that they don’t want a 1v1 game mode and the reasons that it wouldn’t work.

1. The game isn’t balanced for 1v1, classes counter other classes and creates another dimension of tactics for team matches.
2. Yes you can argue that the effect of countering would balance out after playing lots of 1v1 matches, but not every class counters and is countered by the same number of classes – condi survival ranger for example is only really countered by condi necro, yet counters numerous classes.

Another reason why your theory fails.

You just singled out half the classes. Theres no way to balance people for 1v1. It just doesnt happen. Too many hard counters, too much imbalance.

Nobody want’s 1v1 or 2v2. I;d like to see 10v10 or larger possibly, but smaller? no.

And i’ve played wow pvp 2’s 3’s and 5’s up to 2400+

You’re right certain classes will have only 1 specific 1v1 build that outperforms their typical Conquest meta builds.
Rangers -condi/spirits/power.
Engi – Condi/turrets?/some celestial rifle variation.
Ele – d/d / air/other?
War – shoutbow/condi?/hambow variant
Necro – minionmancers/condi
Guard – condi/zerker medi
Thief – they’re thieves…
Mesmers – shatter/pu

It’s build wars. Getting a match where one class counters your build, is no different than a match whose celestial team counters a Zerker team.
The gamemodes can me remedied by either, certain in-game map functions and/or a best out of 3 rounds each lasting at minimum 2m.
Games will have a short time limit regardless. For obvious reasons.

I understand what you’re trying to say in that one class can win the majority over another. I myself have beaten several different condi ranger survival specs so you can add Condi Guard to that list. Yet I’ve completely gotten facerolled by some other survival ranger, or spirit ranger, that I thought was unbeatable.
It’s why I mentioned a best out of 3. After the first loss you’ll have a chance to change specs. Or maybe there’s something else that could be done to remedy that area.

1v1 Tournaments gives you the option to change specs each round. That aspect gave another level of play for players who know they’ll likely get countered with their build.

The truth is we won’t really know how these certain classes will even-out after X amount of games. I imagine it will be a reflection of what Conquest turned into.

Conquest: High tier is now full of at least 2-3 Celestial classes with specific meta builds. Low tier: People are asking for a class specific nerf i.e turrets, rangers, thieves, etc, that you typically wouldn’t have issues with in higher level play.

1v1/2v2: You’ll have the Meta 1v1 builds in higher tier ladders. Low tier: Other mediocre 1v1 builds will seem OP for others.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t Not have a new gamemode.

If a 10v10 blob gamemode is something that i wanted to play, I would join a WvW guild and partake in their raids. I see how 1v1 can be an issue for a lot of people. I also see Stronghold being an issue for people who don’t like fighting NPC’s. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have these gametypes.

If 1v1 is truly a nuisance and people wouldn’t like the gamemode, 2v2 and 3v3 isn’t out of the question. These are TDM games for people who’ve always wanted a true Team Death Match gamemode without the blob vs blob feel.

10v10 is blobbing? 60 people is a blob lol. 10 v 10 is still considered a TINY fight in WvW standards. 10 man raid isn’t even viable.

1v1 servers are always filled with the same people just playing different characters. Not that many people actually frequent those servers. There are thousands of times more players in tPvP actually getting better and learning the game. More power to them.

Yeah sure, now you’ll have 500 thieves for every 1000 players on the leaderboard. The “problem” you’ve brought up won’t be remedied whatsoever.

People who do nothing but 1v1 are generally pretty bad in tPvP (see: Koto) and they add nothing to any team. GW2 is balanced for team gameplay, and creating a game mode where people sit and theorycraft garbage pure 1v1 builds is an awful idea because you’re just going to ruin what GW2 is all about.

The only reason you want this is so that you can take your 1v1 condi guardian build and make it somehow “viable” by creating a new gamemode. (I use the term “viable” loosely here). You probably get thrashed in tPvP all day because your build brings nothing to the team and that’s what makes it bad.

GW2 = team game with team gamemodes.

Yeah, that’s possible in WvW standards. In pvp even teamfight of 8 people can be often messy and confusing becausethere are so many flashy things and animations in gw2. Engis are the worst, my fps always drop around engis. So I wouldn’t like anything bigger than 5v5, possibly 8v8 but it’s quite a lot.

On the other hand, I would like 2v2 arenas.

I can’t say I would be happily playing in 1v1 arenas, though. As said above there are so many hard counters in this game. Imagine being a mesmer and getting matched with an equally skilled thief. Or PU mesmers, turret engis…You could possibly avoid that if those builds weren’t allowed in 1v1 servers but I don’t think people would like that.

At this point it isn’t a matter of facts, but expressing oppinions. Because I pretty much disagree wit everything you just said

As for build switching, yes. It’s allowed in 1v1 Tournaments and currently people have no issues with it. It’s like a chest match where you’re not sure if the opponent will stick with condi this round, or go bursts the next.

10v10 to me is a blob. I don’t care if there are bigger blobs than others in WvW. It’s still a blob.
Same for a 5v5 small zerg. It’s a blob. It’s also why people don’t like Courtyard because it’s a zergfiesta.

You’ve just insulted every condi engi, condi ranger, and every other point assaulter/defender in the game. All these classes are 1v1 specs and they all were Meta last year before the April patch. Saying these classes are Garbage is like saying a Bunk Guardian is Garbage because he got replaced my Celestial builds.
I rather not change the topic, that’s a whole other argument for a different thread but you see my point.

For the record, I do incredibly well in Conquest with my build, in TPVP and SPVP both. I just got my feet wet in Tournaments which is another league of its own so that’ll be the biggest test. I’ll let you know when it’s Meta ;)
