Will we be seeing any [actual] PVP content anytime soon?
Agreed except the opening of your post. I haven’t played one bit of pve for this game and instead of happy for it I am annoyed about the volume of content on a disposable one week event while crickets chirp in PVP.
Paids were nice for a couple days then queues dried up quickly. And as you said, paid is not any sort of new content. That along with many other pvp features should have been included with launch so its hard to be grateful for such things.
We’re not even getting bug fixes and class balance in any reasonable amount of time.
So far GW2 is the game that is perpetually ‘Going to be great someday.’ At least as far as PVP goes. Maybe PVE is great but PVP needs a lot of work and more resources put into it imo.
There’s supposedly a PvP update or two this month. I somewhat doubt custom arenas will be included, and I’m inclined to think most the changes will be balance and bug changes. Honestly, I’m fine with just that if they do a super amount. There are professions with horribly broken traits that have been broken since beta weekend event 1. They need a massive profession bug fix patch that’s like 5 times the size of their previous ones.
Both very well written posts, I back them up totally. I have also bought GW2 mainly for sPvP, since I’m an old GW1 player and have always held huge respect for what Anet did with pvp for MMORPGs there. So on that basis my sPvP expectations were high for GW2, especially since they were talking about making it an e-sport and whatnot.
So when the game finally came out I was shocked to see how much time they put in PvE content and how so so little into spvp content. Literally it must have been like 1000:1. All they did when it comes to spvp is add the 4 maps. Everything else was done through making the pve content (utility skills, weapon skills, traits, the balance…). A huge disapointment.
I often feel like the existing spvp content in the game, that we have so far was made from something like:
A: “Oh hey guys, we really have to give them some sPvP too, you know… Remember? We promised….”
B: “Oh hell OK, make a few conquest maps, that should get them busy for a while I guess…”
So yeah… The sPvP content we have so far is next to 0, and I really hope Anet starts working on it as fast as they can. I hope that for their sake and also because I really want to continue playing the game, which I simply can’t see myself doing for much longer if the content stays this way…

This is sooo true ! .. Sometimes i feel like , 1 person is working on pvp and 49 on pve .. The size from Pve content compared to the PvP “content”/ balance is just ridiculous.

100% sign .. In the beta i thought okay they are maybe not showing every PvP aspect but well it was the WHOLE content..-.-
Gw1 had such a great pvp section and so many people got frustrated when they played gw2 pvp compared to the old and fresh gw1 where u got a Ghostly out of the hall ! ! !!
Well, I don’t really tPvP a lot and certainly don’t bother with paid tournaments. So the “updates” lately about how they’re adding them and improving them don’t really affect me at all.
I’m looking for things like skill and profession rebalances and changes, improvements to traits and so on. Also, something besides Conquest. That’s what I’m concerned about. A ranking system and so on are cute, but I do not care, personally. I know other people do, and I do think it’s important for the game, but when I see blog posts about things like that, I just glaze over it and discover it didn’t actually contain any information pertinent to me at all.
That first rebalance is what I’m aching for, though. There are so many skills right now I simply can’t use, just because the concepts behind them are faulty.
The first 4 posts accurately sum up my feelings as well.
While I am here posting, might as well take this opportunity to promote my GW2 PvP video. If your bored check it out at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR6LU_FLmFA
Man they cant fix the queues , too many players got disapointed
Agreed on more variety would also like actual new teams per game….not just a mix match of the 2 previous teams that played, without having to physically leave back to the mists and find a completely new game to join mid game >.<
When playing beta I actually thought they are not showing the whole pvp content, to keep it a surprise when the game is released. Well I got my surprise, when after release NOTHING was added.
Also I agree with OP, it seems that Gw2 is aimed towards PvE mob grinding crowd, since there is almost 0 things done to improve pvp (well except paid tournaments, but that should have been on release, not 2 months after), but a lot of fixes/additions to pve, like for example a kittening halloween event…
WvW was just wasted development effort, its horrible to play. Other than that theres 4 maps and thats really all we got for our original purchase. Now obviously Anets business model will be to make money on add on releases as they are not subscription yet I feel the pvp conetent that came box’ed is very inadequate and wouldnt inspire me to purchase an addon if I was to expect the same so some new pvp content would be nice before we see any plans for addon releases.
Yes, we need more play types. I get bored of point control fairly quickly and then there is nothing to go too. I like all the ideas you mentioned as game variants. Arenanet needs to add a new gametype quickly too before heavy PvP players start to drop off even more, I don’t want to see that happen but even myself, I’m kind of fading with only one variant. And I completely agree, bunker builds ruin the speed of gameplay, especially tournaments. It’s either just run to a new point because you can’t do anything or get half the team to fight one guy. They’ll probably still live long enough to get back up and kill your team.
Bunkers need a fix since it’s throwing off the fast-paced pvp gameplay but we really need new variants.
I dont understand why Anet feel that PVE will make them successful.. other games give more content to PVE focused players. GW2 was always about the PvP and how finally we were going to get a PvP focused game. But look at how little has changed for PvP since launch compared to constant stream of content in PVE.
A bad decision in my opinion.
