Win at any Cost
You play meta not because it is the way to win. You play meta because it is the way to be effective and therefore – to have fun. If non-meta builds in PVE are fun to play, in PVP you just get owned time after time until you reroll. Not sure if getting owned is anyone’s definition of fun.
You’ll say winning and having fun are sort of euphemisms, well, it can be true.
Simple example: Do you like doublepistol thief gameplay, romanticism of the fantasy duelist? Okay, you won’t be able to enjoy it in PvP, cause you’ll be dead after the first unload.
I am not speaking of rare exceptions and unrankeds, just overall ranked thoughts.
There’s some little builds that go out of “meta” builds and work, but just little ones and frequently only in low rank fights.
In high rank teams, a good engi can kill 2 enemy at the same time, the same about ele. But in low rank team, a engi can kill 1 enemy and try to kill 2 if they’re noobs, and a ele can fight good in 1vs1 but no more.
But if you really like to play in your way… you can do it. But you die quickly…

+1
doesnt matter if someone wants to be the special snowflake, if you die every 30s i simply cant image it to be fun, for exampel a friend of me was playing berseker staff ele in pve, he wanted to do it in pvp too, well after he was getting farmed by thiefs, mesmer and almost everyone who saw that he is a glassy staff ele, he changed to celestial
(told him he could play d/f bersek if he wants but he prefers the staff)
