i think the main problem with engis is that the only vailable game mode is capture point so one way or other you are kind of forced to fight on point or close to it and engis are really good at locational fights
not to mention they have quite build diversitiy, including condi tank, add huge range on grades that allow engi to kill treb from far or pour death from above on point while standing on edge….. yeah~
i might be wrong but it feels like engis are kind of like necros to me, except with knockbacks, dazes, way more tankiness, way more aoe spam and obviously more moblity than necro… maybe that is why most classes find it difficult to deal with them
you kind of have to bring necro if you face team with engis otherwise it’s GG
the real horror starts when engi and necro are on the same team and use confusion stacks + spread conditions…

I have been dueling really strong pu mesmers on my gs/lb warrior and can win about 50% of the time, it is pretty much one of the closest skill matchups in the game from what I can tell. The duels are always down to the wire and usually depend on if i get to use my stances twice or not. I always beat rangers, and I still need to learn what to dodge from engies(because there are sooo many skills that all do similar op damage) but with my dodge spam build I have a pretty good chance of beating them.
The things I have the most trouble with are actually really good necros and mace/s/lb wars. Engies too but I’d like to figure them out soon.
What I’ve learned from this thread:

An evade thief can always faceroll an engi. You won’t even be dealing damage.

team queue/solo queue is full of warriors, while they are a rarity in dueling servers.
Seems like warriors are strong in 1v1 during tourneys but not during duels. Is it possible?

I know… but many times I can kill people in 1v1, but when I go into a dueling server I get stomped.

because tpvp builds are different from dueling builds… at least for some classes
i play thief for example mainly, if i wanted to duel i would pick SA tree but for tpvp i am using trickery.. the difference is huge

Hambow isn’t an exceptional duel build… But it is a more reliable duel build compared than most other viable tPvP builds especially because of the environment you fight in (a point).
You can usually drag out a fight until your stances are up, and then you will have a decent amount of time to get rid of your opponent.
The hambow will still get smashed by most duelists because it’s predictable and AoE based, in a duel nobody will be forced to tank the AoE unnecessarily.
I would say condi warri is far more dangerous in a duel because of the sustained pressure of torments, burning, bleeding, possibly poison on weapon swap along with control conditions (long immobs, cripples). Over the long haul, a condi warrior usually gets his way.
You can make super ridiculous unbeatable duel builds with mesmer, but the mesmer usually played in tPvP is not too difficult to deal with in a duel since they sacrifice pure dueling ability for other utilities.

^ This exactly. If we had game types that didn’t force everyone into a tight ball to fight over a node all the time, we’d have viable ranged specs that would be hard counters to engis.
I really, really wish this would happen. Kiting and fighting with ranged players has an awesome element to it that you almost never get a taste of in sPvP since sPvP is really all about packing in a tight space and blowing up AoEs.
Give us CTF, Give us a mode where we have to defend enemies from blowing up an object (think WoE from Ragnarok Online or defending lords from GW1), give us something like Oddball, or hell, get creative and use the environmental weapon system. Why not have a game type where you have a player on each team turned into a slow moving juggernaut that needs to be escorted to that team’s base?
All we’ve heard on this so far is that ANet “tested” other things and deemed them not fun. I don’t buy that. Look at how long it’s taken for meta builds to evolve into popularity. I mean, remember how long it was until people realized that trap rangers were viable even though nothing changed to buff them? (this is referring to early in the game. Yes, I know trap rangers have fallen out of the meta since then.)

But yes, if ranged builds were viable, bomb kit engis would have a hell of a lot more counters.

Also if your an engineer and ur getting facerolled by s/d thiefs than u should play another class because any good engi can faceroll a good s/d thief. the trick is to never get basi and thats easy, just use a dodge than if he didnt fall for it use n5 shield that way the thief will miss 99% of basi on u. after that you just kitten him with bombs, you can land ur grenade when they use their n3 skill as it is so easy to see the animation even vs asura

Seems like highly damage oriented GS warriors also work well against hambows.

I play a MM and the bunker nade engineers wreck me. I’m cool with it, because tankiness + AoE damage is the logical counter to minion swarms. It’s just more or less impossible to fight.
