TL;DR Implement the PvP systems listed in bold below, and keep us updated so we actually know you haven’t forgotten what you said about making this an eSport.

Well? I can’t help, but feel that PvP is being neglected at this point. We haven’t even gotten a message of what you guys are working on.

Literally just a few announcements that can confirm that you are actually doing something with PvP would be lovely, but I have a feeling that you aren’t doing anything at all, and more than likely devoting most of your resources, and time to the unimportant PvE which is just fine. The thing is at this rate if you take too long you’re going to lose both.

Your PvErs are going to leave. It’s inevitable, there’s simply not enough content. You put work into the PvP aspect of the game, and you are going to get longer term customers who are guaranteed to buy your next x-pac.

You need to start implementing PvP systems here they are, and why (in order of importance):

Rating System

A rating system is something that people can work towards, and more importantly it allows them to actually fight teams that are at their level keeping things interesting instead of just the opposing team just rolling over.

It would be a good idea to add some rewards for reaching certain ratings such as small auras that are only visible in the mists so it won’t hinder the visual based combat, and this way you won’t have to design new armor (though it would be nice).

Spectator Mode

Like any sport if you want it to catch on people need to be able to watch it. The UI has to be simple, and has to have the ability to follow people, and go into free cam mode while showing the health of the teams on each side.

Demo reels would be a nice implementation in the future.

Private Servers

This will allow for skirmishes/practice for the high level players, and it will allow 1 on 1 practice which is quite important in this game, and you can’t really practice anywhere else since dueling isn’t in the game (which confuses everyone greatly).

So 2 birds with one stone.

Game Modes

Different game modes to keep things interesting these don’t have to be competitive in the least they just have to be fun. Just add in things like Capture the Flag, or death match, and they can have their own rating systems with some minor rewards such as glory, or silly titles.

Sorry if I come off as harsh I really want this game to succeed. Everyone does, but you cannot take your time on this like you did with the release (which was a good move), you need to start working on this now, or at the very LEAST keep us updated on how you are coming along to at least remove the feeling of neglect.

PS You can look at the arenajunkies forums if you think I’m the only one who feels this way.

I don’t recall them being that specific, or going into great detail of what they were going to do just some rough ideas that they have yet to implement. The community wants a detailed, and specific answer with a release date so we know when how long to wait, or in some cases when to come back.

Chaining stealth thiefs and portal mesmers would make CTF pretty redundant tbh. Although I would love the game mod, it would never be balanced.

Just make it so that you cant teleport or stealth when you are carrying the flag, like the mmo that shall not be named does. Maybe go further and make it prevent you from having swiftness as well so permaswift builds wont be the go to FCs. Seems like a quick fix to that problem.

mmm yeah maybe, but you’d have to also stop all leaps & movement skills etc i.e thief short bow 5, ride the lightening, and more to boot.

Also no passing of the flag, i.e chaining stealth thief grabs flag and gives it to bunker guardian who strolls to base.

Still a lot of restrictions but would be fun.

Man, I hate referencing that which shall not be named again lol, but leaps and the sort are fine, and have worked in capture the flag maps for a while. Stuns, crippling, knockdowns seem to help balance these skills out. Not tring to argue or anything, just pointing out what I have seen in the past with that style of pvp.

In regards to CTF:

Just make the flag a shinier version of a warrior’s banner and lockout all skills / utilities. Now a person can drop the flag / pick up the flag at will but when they want to move it, they aren’t allowed anything special.

While I was in the HotM, a GM came on and was answering questions in regards to PvP. Everything you mentioned was not only asked, but confirmed. Except the game types (no one asked that). But they currently have their priorities. Paid Tournaments are the next major thing they will be implementing. They’re working on the rewards system for that (probably ironing out the bugs that they had with the tPvP in the beginning).

I have full confidence in A-Net to deliver a successful, fun, competitive E-Sport. The game just released. Aside from CS:GO and SCII, I don’t know of a single game that became an E-Sport before 1 year after release.

MMO’s don’t have the same staying power that FPS games have they need to be updated, or at the very least they need to create something that increases the replayability aka the aforementioned PvP systems to keep people interested in the game.

The PvP doesn’t feel competitive because it isn’t. If you take too long you’re going to permanently lose a good amount of the player base because they will in fact move on, and it’s not guaranteed any will come back.

I managed to hold out for a while, but I’m beginning to feel neglected, as well. And it isn’t just PvP suffering, some traits and skills are broken. Just… broken. We had months of beta testing for this kind of stuff, but there still hasn’t been a fix to any of it. It severely impacts all aspects of the game. My favorite part? Ride the Lightning, and Ranger Sword 1 are two of the most complained about skills I see in terms of bugginess, but Thieves got an HS fix within a couple of weeks – one of the most complained about skills in PvP in terms of power.

Good post, OP, but I feel much of that stuff will be moot if they don’t get a handle on the mechanical issues the game has.

I see the sPvP (8v8 Zergfest) as completely broken.

No balance:

Warrior doing a lot damage and can hold a lot damage;
Thief (dagger/X) has only one skill (2) ;
Elementalist has no survivability or do extremely high damage;
Guardian doing a lot damage or tanking really hard. Guardian can really tank, really tough tank. This is a problem because there is no “tanks” in Guild Wars 2, right?;
Mesmer should loses its illusions when goes to downsate;
Ranger low mobility for such small maps as sPvP, should be like Thief’s “Acrobatics” traits;
Necro and eng. are fine;
Downstate is a broken feature at sPvP and is killing the combat.

No Rank

sPvP should be fun right? I don’t think like that anymore. I have past almost all Beta weekends playing sPvP. Everyone was new at the game, so everyone was “noob” at the begining.

But now, only see pro players killing novice people, say if someone is “pro” or “novice” by glory level isn’t right, for some people, they can reach level 20 on glory but still playing like a level 5 guys. So where is the fun here?

You don’t need to play many matches to see new players, trying to play with “advanced” professions such as Elementalist, engineers, but they have no chance agains’t loads of instant kill combos from warrios and thiefs which are easy professions.

8v8 Zergfest makes everything worst, those small maps shouldn’t be played by 16 people. I don’t even know why you let this happen.

No duel/No private servers

Why not ??

Nothing to do all day

Once I got 80 I ran to get the best items set of the game, once I got it I went to WvW. At the begining was fine, but now… Those two servers I am fighting against and mine has no people fighting, WvW is dead at morning, all week long.

So PvE is complete, there is noone at WvW (At morning), so let’s have some fun at sPvP.

But I can’t do that for while, until you work hard on sPvP.

Arenanet, sPvP is broken (8v8 Zergfest).
I am trying to help you to build the best MMO ever. So work on it, sPvP is the only feature last for people who ended PvE.

Good things that should be improved/added

Keg Brawl is kitten fun, I would expend all day long playing that thing, but it has no reward, seems you are doing, like, nothing in the game. And since you can’t inter into a Lobby like in sPvP you can’t play with friends.

Should have more new stuff like that in the game.

Add more sPvP maps like “Capture the Flag”, “Destroy the base”.

Add Voice chat on Tournaments.

guardian nerf was needed, been saying 100% retal is busted.

thief/warrior burst is still over the top with no fixes in sight.

mesmers still enjoying survivalbility above any other class in glass cannon specs.

mesmer illusions can still cheese through walls. hilarious watching 3 illusions chase a dude through his base doors then kill him infront of his spawn.

ele’s still have no survival capabilities while using a similar glass spec like mesmer/thiefs do all day long.

engi abilities mainly combo finishers are mostly still broken.

no additional game modes in spvp yet? dayum even rift a pve game released with more then one pvp game mode, and that says alot.

Problem with Eles is it’s all or none one way or the other. I can do a S/D set and hold 2v1, and some 3v1s indefinitely, but my chances of killing anyone even 1v1 are pretty effing slim. Likewise I can go glass, kill people rather quickly, but I die if someone sneezes on me. Even with the glass build, the effort and time requirement to kill people is far above just about any other glass spec. If you play Ele, you’re stuck support because Guardians still better bunkers with more knockbacks, and Thieves, Warriors, and Mesmers still make better burst builds with more survivability.

I want to see Capture The LEADER (similar to Gears of War) where a random team player gets designated as the team leader.

TDM is like a no-brainer, I don’t understand how this is not in place yet?

CTF would be ok, I’m more into the 2 modes above though, there should be separate servers for game modes that people enjoy. I want to strictly play game modes where the objective is simply to kill the other team, simple, nothing more.

This is GUILD WARS we need more focus on the PvP here. I agree, regarding PvE, the world is BEAUTIFUL, but dead. There is not point except to grind, acquire, achieve, and farm to oblivion. PvE could be so much more, but that’s another topic.

If they add RELIC RUN style maps…

Anyhow i read a comment somewhere once that they dont want to fragment the community by addind too many pvp types. But then i also read somewhere once that different sources of speed boosts would stack without a cap… ah well cant really blame them for changing their minds on either of those bad decisions.

I agreeish. They released too soon. Their explorable modes arent polished enough to be endgame content. Their pvp lacks the tools listed here, and they have a huge workload of bugs and balancing to work through before they can really address either of these.

But… from where they stand now, they have to fix whats broken first. It will take time. Just pretend the game didnt actually launch yet. Play mop or bl2 or dota2 or ta or whatever for a couple months. Theres no subscription. Gw2 will be here for you eventually

Yes, please let us know what your plans are with the PVP in this game arenanet, and please oh please fix the ridiculous lag that has been plaguing european players since sunday. 3-5 sec lag spikes in a game this fast paced is ridiculous.

Slowly but surely, people are quitting with the intention of coming back “when they fix bugs and add a reason to pvp”. It’s becoming harder and harder to find people to tpvp with regularly, and it’s pretty disheartening when you do get a decent group of players, only to find out a couple of them have quit because they’re bored and you have find people all over again.

Brilliant.

Anet- the game’s been out long enough for there to be content updates, content that should have been here day one anyway. The only thing keeping the game afloat is the lack of gear- so be thankful that one good decision was made. But, no gear isn’t going to keep people long when gameplay has no variation.

They spent most of their budget on making a massive pve world to grind out hearts- why? Nobody expected the pve of this game to be good, it’s guild wars after all- yet the spvp seems like an afterthought in a game that should revolve around it.

More things will come in time, but remember it isn’t a sub game so the don’t get the same steady finds Blizz gets for wow, so I don’t expect a massive team of developers to be employed sucking up the funds they had from game sales.

@reefer clearly your new to the mmo scene so ill lay it out real simple like since you are somewhat caveman-ish with your infant comments. pretty much every other mmo has loads more pvp content, whether its rift or warhammer or even wow. this game was sold on the fact that it would be epic in the pvp scene and with only 1 game type and samish maps its getting real boring real fast. im sorry you just cant see that but it is what it is. i am not an infant and every other mmo i have played has captivated me for longer then 2 months, and i am referring to pvp.

The UI and visuals in the game currently does not cater well to the eSport scene.

1) As a spectator, the ease of recognizing character classes in the thick of battle is not there. Even as a player, I’d have to refer to an enemy class by icon or the skills they use, and ideally we should be able recognize at a glance easier.

2) Skill animations. Some skill animations are great, but often there is a lack of visual identity. eSports need to be aware that not all spectators have complete knowledge of the game. Excitement and entertainment is diminished when the complexity of what is happening on screen is hard to translate. Warcraft 3 was a less successful eSport to Starcraft simply because too many mechanics were hidden visually to the spectator, or that the skill doesn’t translate well.

e.g.
Starcraft: Psionic Storm: raging lightning appears on top of the enemy. Spectators realize this translates as heavy AOE damage.

Put this in retrospect to GW2: Signets are probably the worst offenders to this. Not only are players confused as to which signet animation corresponds with which effect, as a spectator I’ll be left scratching my head.

Visually I think the elementalist is where the game needs to be at in terms of animation recognition. I’m not saying this from a player’s point of view, but a spectator.

I think some of these problems reside in the plethora of boons and conditions present. Some are very good in terms of visual recognition, such as cripple and burning. It is even helpful that the player yells out “I’m burning!”. But some effects are simply not translating well in terms of visual excitement, such as retaliation.

The current UI is serviceable to the player, but for it to be a great eSport an entirely different UI needs to be made available for the observer.

Observer mode from GW1 would be a start, but it is outdated. Camera controls need to be more fluent and cinematic. ‘Behind the player’ camera simply isn’t good enough. The UI needs to be accommodate the spectator.

E.g.
Perhaps have an extended menu on boons and conditions on the side.
When two opposing players are selected, have their HP shown at the top of the screen like a Street Fighter interface, have the camera hone in from behind a player with reference to the enemy he is fighting (like a flight simulator chase cam).

Here is a mashup of what I think might work. I particularly like the camera angle here. Btw, I don’t play fighting games competitively, or even passionately, but I think for an esports audience, fighting game interfaces are successful, and may be successful here too.

Ya, I would agree with much of what you said. To go even further, an informative observation mode is, in my opinion, the most important thing you could possibly include.

The trick however, is to be informative without presenting too much information. So things like being able to add and remove certain bits of information would be nice.

Of the information I think ought to be included are the skills bars and an easy and quick view of condis/boons. It would be nice to see an option for a LoL style UI where you can see all 10 skill bars and the current skill usages/cooldowns. I loved how in GW1 you could communicate to other people observing the game, I think that needs to remain. Basically, find a way to shove as much possible information in as you can while still providing a way to remove information for people who just don’t want to be overwhelmed.

Game modes is most what plagues my life, followed closely behind by build stagnation, which stems mainly from the extremely small array of skills to choose from mixed with the need to use one or two of them on all my builds because of the preponderance of CCs. But mainly game modes. I spent most of my GW1 time in RA. I hated hero battles with a passion because it wasn’t about fighting. Unfortunately, that’s the only PvP in GW2 – that dreadful Conquest mode.

I kind of hated PvE in GW1 most days. Heaven knows I hate GW2 endgame. I’d spend all my time in PvP if it actually had a real RA. It depresses me a little, since I’m pretty sure whoever is in charge thinks such a thing has no place in GW2, ever. :-/

private servers in an mmorpg are never a good idea, and will never happen.

remember this is an mmorpg. league of legends/dota/smite/CoH are MOBA’s, not mmorpg’s (multiplayer online battle arena).

pretty good article here:

Private Servers #1 priority

these will allow for tournaments all over the community which will actually promotes e-sport
in hand to hand with this comes ofc spectator mode (and if possible game replays feature)

ladder, other game modes, etc. are only for casuals …
I know many of you will disagree with me about the ladder but for real competitive players some ELO numbers means nothing … winning tournaments does

I’m not saying we don’t need ladder, ofc we does – it’s goot for practicing and playing with equal skill lvl opponents but IMHO it’s not #1 priority

private servers > paid tournaments + ladder > spectator mode

Private servers are really needed. It would allow the teams to fight each others, maybe organize some kind of leagues and arrange games to train for the ladders & paid tournaments. Also, I believe they are easy to implement.

Paid tournaments + Ladder are also important. Good players will always want to show how good they are. With no gear progression and ranks being a pvp grind there are many good pvpers who arent interested in gw2. It would change with the implementation of a ladder/rating. OFC only paid tournaments should be rated.

The spectator mode isnt a priority right now. There arent many teams & good matchs to watch, and we can always use streamings and youtube-like platforms

OP has some valid points, otherwise I just see a thread full of bads and whining.

Personally I think spectator mode like in gw1 is one of the most important features to implement, as right now you can’t really tell what went wrong, and who is doing what wrong and stuff like that unless everyone in your team is recording their entire match.

Removing solo queues from premade tourney queues would remove a SIGNIFICANT amount of kitten teams and allow for more interesting tournament play, for both parties.

Oh, and if they ever remove downed state because of you whining kitten, I’ll officially kitten my pants with anger. But I honestly doubt they will remove an entire design feature from their game because some bads can’t stability stomp.

And class balance? Well kitten guys, some of you really have no idea what the classes can do and not do. If you just play 8v8 you have no clue, just none.

@kashou on class balance you are simply wrong period. i cant actually see how you could be more wrong considering the patch cycles including so many nerfs, not to mention TTK being below 2 seconds with many builds. in case you didnt realize TTK being less then 2 seconds proves imbalance.

on spectator mode being important, just no. no no no no NO. need more game modes as a priority in spvp or people are going to jump ship in droves.

on solo queues being seperated from premade queus, i like this idea although every dev to ever respond to this request in any game has said the exact same thing, “will increase que times”. i would rather have longer que times if it meant a more balanced experience but i guess the devs disagree.
