is there better mmo pvp currently? haven’t found any.

The core elements that contribute to combat are amazing; things like movement-related CC, leaps and evasive dodge rolls, active dodge are what set this game apart from other MMOs.

Even so, poor balance and class design coupled with a lack of game-modes end up ruining an otherwise outstanding PvP scene.

yes, balance is a problem, and imo there are other, even worse problems, but still, all things considered, gw2 is the best.

btw, those problems that are present, they are not inherent to game imo. they can be fixed.

GW2 had like the best shot out of any PvP MMO I’ve ever seen, swarms of fanboys, esports teams lining up to play it…. yet it lost the vast majority of everyone within a few months…

Yep. I enjoy mechanically playing the game, but there are a ridiculous amount of problems with it. And it isn’t just poor balance that can be ironed out over time. The problem is the extremely poor design decisions which the developers still believe are good.

It seems like the market has recognized the positive aspects of active combat however and is adopting it into upcoming games. It is my hope that the games coming out in the next year or two will be able to replicate the fast paced combat, but have developers that are more up to the task of actually designing a game.

i dont mind losing fanboys. in fact one thing id love to see is the remnants of excitement and drama packing away.

Without any competition it’s hardly something to brag about. Every game developer atm is catering casual and kindergarten PvP because that’s where money is.

For the love of god this game has downstate and res stacking in PvP, need I say more?

Yea this game is absolutely brilliant. I mean, where else can you create copies of your own character and blow them up in a blast of pink butterflies?

I have searched long and hard to find another mmo with pvp that is this good and accessible but there is nothing out there atm. All the rest have worse balance issues, less communication from devs, and are gear-based not skill-based.

There are a couple of mmos with perhaps a better combat system but they have gear-grinds or take too long to even get to the spvp part; ie are limited in other more important ways.

The main thing the game is lacking is a variety of pvp game modes, and that is supposedly going to be addressed.

There are a lot of good things about GW2s pvp. On forums people typically focus on things that annoy them or things that arent as great (yet) in this game. But there are a lot of things like that in any MMO.

There are so many things that do make this the most enjoyable MMO experience atm.

+ The combat. Despite all its class specific flaws has the potential to be called the best MMO combat on the market atm. Its fast, twitch based and due to the lack of healers not as drawn out as in other MMOs.
+ Small scale 5v5 battleground combat. More diversity than arena and less zergy than RBGs. Combining strategic play with smaller scale skirmishes.
+ Making money and leveling via pvp being a viable option.
+ No (noticeable) cheaters.
+ No focus on weekly caps (logging on once a week -> play untill cap -> logg off again).
+ Decay instead of teams and players sitting on their rating for weeks or even months. (eventho that its not optimized yet).
+ A dev team that communicates and actively asks for feedback.
+ A game that is moving forward with a dev team that tries to make this a better game.

In fact i dare to claim that a lot of people who play that other MMO dont switch simply because they invested a lot of time in it and all their (online) friends are still playing it (thats what i get when i ask my wow contacts to play GW2). Not because its a superior pvp game across the board.

Before you think think that im some raving fanboy. There are some areas where GW2s pvp can improve on.

- Diffference in depth between classes. Some guys need to hit 1 or 2 often poorly telegraphed abbilities to kill someone, while others are far more complex.
- Lack of gamemodes that are both easy to get in to/figure out and hard to master. With the new gamemodes inc we might see this become reality.
- Still to hard to follow due to (AI) clutter and lack of telegraphs.
- Lack of a proper ladder rating system (they are working on it).
- An engine that isnt as optimized/doesnt run as smooth as.

Best mmo pvp yes but also the most frustrating mmo to play because of overdue bugfixes.

i believe you are talking about few different things here (telegraphs, etc). but if you mean #1 ranger heroes kinda problem, i dont mind them. you know which build is good and which one is lame. and leaderboards indicate top char.

The game is too slow for my fingers + lags and weird automated intern skill rotation slows my gameplay.

From what I hear, Anet is kinda ignoring PvE when it comes to balance, literally everything can be easily beaten by three warriors and two guardians. That and allot of the gameplay mechanics when it comes to PvE, end up being dull.
So I’m not really sure they decided to forsake PvP for other bigger things unless those other and bigger things are the next MMO…

The game needs more than 1 change.
The game was released half baked, which left it full off issues.
Not an un-savable thing in and of itself, but the devs… they haven’t more than touched on any core issue (condis/tourny setup/rewards/conquest).
With how the game was released, getting it to a healthy, able-to-be-popular state, well that requires constant well thought out fundamental changes.
The devs haven’t done any of that (timely/well thought out/fundamental), so, I mean, sure these guys could turn GW2 around… it’s not literally impossible… but after a year and a half they showed no signs of being capable of it…
Lets put it this way, I wouldn’t bet on these guys with 1:20 odds.

They care but haven’t been able to do anything notable to help (which is effectively the same as not caring)
Balance has progressed.
Gameplay has stayed the same, a few improvements a few bad calls, nothing crazy has happened here.
GW2’s gameplay was bad around beta.
GW2’s gameplay hasn’t improved by much after a year and a half of tweaking…
That’s REALLY BAD.
They post more on the forums, sure.
The whole reason for ‘we want more communication’ is to make patches better.
The patches aren’t any better.
As a AAA MMO with no concept of ‘how we are going to make money’ it kind of makes you wonder how well these guys think things through.

Sure, that could be fine.
If
the game was widely popular and what I am saying is a small minority… but it’s not… most people in NA who played GW2 for PvP left it for some reason or other. I happen to share roughly the same opinion as the guys I played the game with so don’t mind hopping on occasionally and throwing it out there.

I mean, you can talk about how ‘if you have nothing nice to say do not say anything at all’ and its a fine ideal, but being positive about how things are wont shear the sheep, so to speak.

I think the PvP in this game is fun. The problem is that those of us who feel that way are in the minority. PvP just isn’t very popular here. It is basically the third wheel between PvE and WvW.

I do want to see a team deathmatch at some point. I think that will be more fun to watch that conquest.

is it though? how big is the forum drama crowd, may be about a dozen? pvp community is in thousand, with hotjoins probably tens of thousand.

pvp community may be minor to pve/wvw numberwise (which is characteristic to mmo), but those who play it – enjoy it. why else would they keep playing?

i wish there was a member reputation on this frums where those +1/-1 on posts would accumulate. we would see what community really thinks and were the drama crowd stands in this game.

If there was a better pvp MMO out there I would play it, but there isn’t, sadly.

As far as it goes as i compare the 2 games gw1 & gw2 i kinda like more the 1st…
Gw2 has been a disappointment from the start

honestly people. i loved warcraft II back in the last century, but its 2014…

GW2 pvp isnt ‘really’ mmo pvp is it? With world pvp and duels etc. It is completely cut off from the rest of the game. To me it has more similarity to Smite than WoW. Grab a toon and play.

nope. it is the various profession haters who whine and complain so much are killing the game. warrior haters seem to be have a higher population.

the sPvP population seems to have increased due to the rewards restructure and will rise steadily with new game modes and better rewards coming.

those elitism haters will eventually leave the game while casual players will carry on playing the game. everyone will be happy. no haters. just happy players.

actually, i am trying out a minion master necromancer now.
not too bad. feels good. light and easy.

they say minion master necro will be nerfed heavily in march so i still got 1 month to enjoy wrecking some havoc with it. fun.
