If it’s playing your class that’s the issue, learn all your attacks know what they do and when you should use them. And learning every other class is just as important as learning yours, know what to dodge how they play etc

If it’s how to actually play a tournament that’s the issue I would watch a few streams see what the good teams do (rotations etc)

Try focusing on specific details of your play or things that you would like to improve on. Maybe you have trouble with 100b warrior match ups for example, you could get in a empty hotjoin with a warrior friend and try to rely crack down on timing for dodges/interrupts.

If you’re looking to improve mechanics or positioning you could try recording a few of your matches, then watching them later to figure out what went wrong when you died or when your team lost a point or ect…

The best advice I can give for training in any game is to be specific on what you want to improve on; don’t just say “I want to get better, so i’m going to play more”, try to think more like “I want to die less to X so I’m going to rely focus on improving Y”, and go from each issue you face with that philosophy until you work out all the little things -repetition is key.

You can’t be good at pvp here, that’s the obvious answer. At least good as ppl commonly think “being good”. There are some build/ classes better of others. Simply. Are you frustrated of you class build? Roll one of the untouchble good class/build and avoid without tears the frustating build. The pvp is not balanced and will never be. Wanna change that? don’t complain, they, yes THEY, don’t even read forums; just roll a op classs/build. when they’ll see everyone with same spec perhaps something will change. Can’t you do by yourself what is needed? Call your friend and zerg? Gw2 encourges game grp. Yeee i agree but if you translate that in pvp……zerg!
Evryone else who says i can do that i usually….bullkitten. against noobs you can do everything, but, when “skill”, whatever this word means, are equal, best class-build wins. Everything else is bullkitten.

What class do you play? My #1 tip would be to get some experience with all the classes before you decide on your “main”. That way, you’ll be able to identify when enemies are using a certain skill, meaning you’ll be able to counter it effectively.

Hotjoins probably aren’t the best for learning a profession from scratch. If you see somebody who’s good at the class you play, feel free to ask him for his spec, and some tips on how to play it. Then, practice practice practice. Good luck man!

getting good is limited in this game coz you can’t really find out how good you are relative to others. when leaderboards arrive you will see who is where and also maybe observe the top players so you can learn from them.

The most skilled players in this game are the one who were skilled enough to select thief or mesmer as their main profession.

why this soudns like wow 2.0 lol, i was glad in wow since the arena start i quit cuse the pvp got kitten by oneshoting classes and poor balance, some one told me this game got a better pvp, after trying for a few mounths it was pretty easy to adatp but, i was playing with a staff ele LOL i realzied it sucks big time.

moving on i change to a mesmer cuse i dont like the D/D melee mage that ele has to be, but i found that maybe i need more learning /training in this game or there just poorly balance stuff that doesnt make me be better, like thief they just spam heartseeker and i find no way to fight them i just run away and avoid dying

im not saying i should faceroll everyone here cuse i was good at wow, im thinking that i actually need to become better here, or this game is poorly balanced as wow is

If you are playing sPvP then go play tPvP you will have a lot more difficult encounters there and won’t be one shotted as often. Also, following the constructive advice some people posted like learning other builds to “counter” will help too.

I think the unbalance here is very different from WoW. If we for a second forget d/d-eles almost everything can be countered 1vs1; the problems/imbalances really arises when you look at it in a group-context and have conquest-mode.

You can’t compare this to WoW … sadly not really to gw1 either. Imho the latter is the bad news.

Roll a theif and spec burst its stupidly easy to play and if you fail you can escape very easily. They burst me down to 2k health within 2 seconds and im full toughness if I dont use distortion blink or decoy im pretty much screwed

Personally, I saw the greatest improvement playing engineer when I learned what other classes did. Everyone has their own way to kill you. If you don’t know how your opponent is trying to kill you and what they’re trying to do, then how do you expect to kill them? I know a thief is going to try to gib me (or harass me), a warrior is gonna try and gib me with no stun break etc etc. Being able to differentiate between the variety of options that almost every class has is essential. If you run up to a triple meditation guardian thinking he’s a bunker then you’re gonna have a bad day.

Secondly, always have a good build. If you don’t have a good build you’re gonna get schraped.

FINALLY, play more, get better. Solo queue, play in pugs etc etc. The one thing I can suggest is that you never rage at randoms or pugs. While you are only one player on a five man team and you can’t carry everyone to victory all the time, if you ever kitten up in a fight, if you ever lose a 1v1, if you ever screw up a rez or a stomp then you contributed to that loss yourself as well, and fixing that is how you get better.

also, talk to acandis. If any nub has any questions go see him, he’s trying to set somethin up to help new players

Choose ur top 3 nemesis,EG Bunker ELE,shatter mesmer,perma stealth thief.

Choose ur fav profession,make a build to counter the above 3.

If you have friends who use the above 3 you can duel them,everytime you lose,tweak your build accordingly to the reason of your defeat,if you can’t find friends,not to worry,those abovementioned 3 profession and build is so common in spvp you’re bound to run into them.

After awhile you realise that certain profession will be hard to beat due to superior trait/weapon/utility synergy thus that’s why people use these builds and profession.

Alternatively you can look for someone using the same profession and duel them,learn from defeat,what weapon skills,utilty,trait,eq,combos they used etc.

verdelet, that is not true at all and the exact opposite of how you get better.

Believe it or not, many of the top players (myself included) think that engis are the most overpowered class in the game right now by a decent bit. That goes so far against common knowledge that its ridiculous.

Some builds are hard to beat. You don’t try and counter them with a class/utilities you have 5 games with then call them overpowered once you die.

whats this? what the hell do you even mean?, what do i have to try? faceroll ppl who has lower skill than me i got tired of that get roled by players who are better? havent found one, dying by a thief who 2shot me yes often and its boring me

1- Learn basic mechanics/capabilities of your class
2- Learn the popular high level build(s) for your class (watch steams, read)
3- Study and practice a basic strategy for your build, develop your muscle memory with it
4- Learn popular builds/strats for other classes, especially ones you feel weakest against, learn how to counter them(watch streams, play it yourself some)
5- Practice, duel, get feedback and advice from other players

^ This is the order I’d take in trying to improve. #3 might actually be the most important there. Just being able to execute a solid combos or openers quickly and efficiently, and working on reaction time, stun breaks, movement/positioning. Needs to all become things you don’t have to think about, so you can concentrate on what’s happening around you.

Hey man, it’s what most people do, whether they are “good” players, “bad” players, or in between. People lose and complain about balance instead of figuring out a way to win.

Play a warrior. I suggest investing in toughness/power first (aka soldier’s amulet). With a huge HP pool and some decent defense, you’ll have plenty of time to learn how to “react” to burst, conditions, cc’s… Please be noted, you are there to learn, not to be a killing machine. Warrior’s are an ideal class to newbies! Easy to understand and farly good against other newbies.

After playing the warrior for a while, you’ll probably have a decent reaction to your stunbreakers / condition removals/ when to block and when to dodge, etc. Now you are ready to pick a class you feel like playing. First off, spec however you want, don’t listen to those scrubs saying “omg your build sucks!1”. Play whatever you feel comfortable with. After you get used to it, try to improve your build by checking it weaknesses. “I’m lasting much longer in fights, but my damage isn’t enough to kill my nemesis on time. Maybe I should change my traits/skills to something more agressive but still pretty tankable?” Do it, till you have the “perfect build” for you!

A big issue in this game is people copy builds, but don’t fully understand the build when they play it. So if they play against another build that destroys them, they complain instead of changing how they play, or changing the build itself. I run into this issue too, but once you realize this it’s a lot easier to deal with. I don’t want to give secrets away, so I’m going to give an extreme example, but it would be like playing a condition build yet you’re mind is set on doing as much direct damage as possible.

However, at first I would really recommend playing the most common/competitive builds without making changes. This way you get a feel for what has been working and why. You should learn why these builds take certain traits, sigils, etc. It’s a really good idea to do this for every class, too. It takes time, but when this game gets competitive there’s no reason not to know every class.

Again, if you want to be competitive you should be focusing on the long term. There were a lot of good players from other games that played this game and quit. A lot of people seemed to think these players weren’t that good, but honestly they didn’t stick around with the game for that long to really pull ahead from the crowd.

There’s a lot of little (and big) things that players/teams just aren’t doing, and instead it seems like everyone is focusing on the most overpowered bestest build in the game. It’s pretty clear to me that there’s only a handful of people that are going to continue being really good at theorycrafting builds, and that’s their strength. But for a lot of other people it’s not your strength (it’s not mine either!). If it’s not your strength, then stop focusing on it being the be all end all. By doing so you totally miss out on so many things that help make you become better. At this point if you’re still playing this game competitively, you might as well be playing for the long-term.

Anyways, i’m getting carried away and no one ever believes what I say when I tell them things, so i’ll just stop there. lol.

80/20. You learn the first 80% really fast, the rest comes at a crawl pace.
One thing is joining a team, because figuring things like rotations out and teamwork out gives you a higher level of insight. Theres only so much progress you can make as an individual. Also post your spec/class and get feedback, and watch good players on twitch.tv streaming.
Especially players who play your class in tournies. Not many high level players stream anymore, but a few still do.
