There is nothing wrong with HS spam. Not one thing. One slow on the thief and you can’t HS. Not to mention you waste the initiative to hit nothing.
It has a longer animation than anything else and is queued. So a thief in a team fight chaining them will die to focus fire while he’s locked into his 3 HS spams. Especially since thieves are a top priority for team fights.
The only balance change left for thieves is that Backstab either needs a 2 second cooldown or when attacking from stealth, your next ability will remove stealth. Because right now spamming BS on a person that just chain blocks/blinds isn’t balanced. The class needs to follow the rules put in place for the game.

i simply used HS as a example, the problem i was addressing is lack of penalty for mindless spamming with the thief class. not to mention i stated that HS spam is a poor and weak gameplan both defensive and offensively…did you read that part?
giving BS a 2 second CD would do almost nothing. and thieves do get removed from stealth when they attack, they just dont get removed when they get hit while in stealth.
you cant spam BS, its impossible. you hit with it, your out of stealth, you get a 3 second debuff before you can enter stealth again.

What would this accomplish? Spamming these moves isn’t a particularly effective method of fighting (and will in fact get you killed more often than not). Really, what is the point of nerfing bad play?
For quite a few classes, it’s possible to play badly and still achieve results.
This contrasts starkly with other classes, where bad play results in almost instant death.
The issue this would partly address would be the very low skill floor.
I have no strong opinion on the change suggested, but I do believe all classes should have similar skill-floors and skill-caps. There’s no reason to reward people who just mash 3 buttons to victory, while others are busting their balls using their full skillset just to survive.
It’s just poor design.
But the only way you could achieve results with such a playstyle is if you were playing against other bad players playing badly. I don’t think it is wise to balance PvP around low level play, which is what this would be doing.
yes and the backstab glass cannon build is the worst group pvp build in the game in terms of it making a contribution to winning or losing, still gonna be nerfed.

If that build is nerfed, it will be due to the drastically low time to live it causes for some other players, which is a completely different issue.
I would hope that the discouragement for mindless spamming is dying to any player who has more than a day’s worth of PvP in this game under their belt.

That is just a blanket statement that most thief’s use in this discussion. Quite peculiar that, ingame 9 out of 10 times all i see is spamming thiefs in open matches and tournies yes. 9 out of 10 in these forums also claim that only bad thiefs do that and only bad players die to it.
Funny how that works.
Fact of the matter is that spamming is what makes thiefs win with the exeption of a condition build maybe and that is where the issue lies. Any other class will at the end of a fight have been forced to use most if not all of their skills wisely and it is a big difference from being able to rely on just one button.
As for the one shot skill , there simply should not be one on any class, period.

More simple. Put a minimal reuse ( 40 milisesc) for all thieves skills. This system block the “spam” skills.

Not every class even has a ‘burst’ skill. Nevermind a (somewhat) spammable one.

backstab would never be affected, PW played properly would never be effected, pistol mainhand will never be affected.
at least not by competent players.
the only thing this will serve is to make HS spamming even less feasible and hurt spammers in general. it should have little effect on good theives.
and @ Smackjack, despite what you think, most players (especially in hotjoin or pugged tpvp) ARE bad players. especially in a game this new.

1 single pool of initiative is something that force you to decide what to use. swapping weapons allow other classes to cycle their skills.
if you end your ini pool with shortbow, switching weap wont give u more ini.

Your suggestion is better than what we have now and would encourage some skill management. However it think it would be better to just give every class initiative.
You could do what TOR did with energy for the Gunslinger/Scoundrel. The more energy you had, the faster you regen. The less you have the slower you regen. Of course Thief skills would have to be balanced around this new system.
going OT: i would like that mesmer’s clones spam would be lowered the same way of how anet is going to nerf thief damage.
