Q:
incentive to stay relevant in PVP
First of all, it wasn’t short.
Secondly, it won’t be an impulse purchase if you bought it tomorrow or next week.
Elite specializations give you a different way to play the class. It’s 1/6 of the options.
Will some of the classes utilize these elite specializations? Most likely.
Will elite specializations be required to do well in pvp? No.
In many games people run niche builds to what is available to them, sure running the absolute meta will allow you to perform at the highest competition levels. But don’t expect to skyrocket just because of one different specialization.
I almost exclusively PvP. I bought the expansion and thought it was worth it. I’ve been in situations just like you, if you can’t spend $50 for a one time purchase, I don’t think your concern should be “can I stay competitive in a video game without spending $50.”
You should focus on cutting back somewhere else and start saving money in some form for your life in general.

GW offers some really cheap entertainment. If you think you will pvp a lot, then the $50 is worth it.
Just buy used textbooks to save money.
If you’re really tight on dough, get yourself a sugarmomma if you’re good looking enough like I did. lol j/k.

Total options in our case: n!/k!(n-k)!
k in our case= 3(you can combine any 3 specializations)
old n= 5(when we had 5 specializations) so total “old” options: 5!/3!2!= 10 different specs
new n=6(since +1 from elite) so total choices are 6!/3!3!= 20
that means theres 10 different specs that include the elite, from a total of 20
that’s 1/2 not 1/6, get your math straight
I am not using the elite spec as a guard and I am doing just fine. I have the expansion too, I just don’t like playing dragonhunter. That being said some of the new builds are OP, I am sure we will see nerfs in the following weeks.
