is spvp dead?
The main reason for this is probably that sPvP is so unforgiving to new players. The first thing that happens to a new player in a match (after spending 10 minutes figuring out how to join one) is being totally lost and running around randomly, then getting facestomped by a Legendary Champion D/D ele. He then respawns and runs to another point, where he gets double-teamed by a p/s engi and a mesmer. He then proceeds to quit the game, because that wasn’t fun at all.
The more people do this, the higher the concentration of veteran players becomes compared to new players, which in turn leads to a higher chance of getting matched up with veterans, and more new people quitting. It’s a cycle.
The only thing that can save sPvP isn’t some tournament or desperately pushing esports™, but to make pvp more accessible to newcomers by creating some sheltered learning enviroment or training area, where they can try pvp without running into highly-skilled people, and without the pressure of a scoring system.
Just my 2 cents.
Conquest, where “bunker holding points builds” takes in a bigger percentage than actual player vs player limit builds→unstable balance→messes up player mentality→poor pvp experience.

Ofcourse this games PvP is dead. Literally everything about SPvP in this game is terrible except for the combat.
One game mode, really? That promotes skill less aoe spam and tanks playing a silly king of the hill mini game.
The rewards being freaking awful, we have one, ONE armor set that is PvP unique, LOL. The reward tracks are horrific, just loot boxes full of absolutely useless junk.
Balance – Need anything be said on this?
Matchmaking, yeah never seen anything this bad in a game with a ranked mode, pretty much ever. It’s mindblowing in the skill ranges of players in one single game. Matching high end rank 1-10 players against people who can’t even break onto the leaderboards or completely new players? Seriously? Most matches I play are complete blow outs. 500-200 games all the freaking time, it’s no fun, it’s not competitive, soloq is nothing but a giant gamble when you hit that join now button, your gambling on who gets 4v5 or the ‘stacked’ team, seeming most games are stomp fests.
And the 4v5s, don’t even get me started. Soloq has been in the game for how long now? And over 6 months ago a dev commented they was working on way to solve this. SIX MONTHS, and they CAN’T ADD A READY BUTTON UPON QUE POP, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I only play PvP for easy achievement points and the reward tracks. The pvp experience in this game is awful.
Every time I see a turret enginer or get moad I feel infuriated.
it can’t be dead if it never was alive to start
The only exclusive skyhammer stream
Needs 8v8 back. 5v5 is too formulaic for casual PvP’ers and rarely is 5v5.
it’s completely dead, there isn’t even a real NA team.
I genuinely recommend just not playing.

100% agree with this! New players are just left with nothing to guide them. There are a post in the forums, but the majority of players never go to the forums to learn basics. We need a way better training area, with preferably a training match with AI that just do basic rotations. The veteran players also need to lend a hand to new players. I have seen people ask for hours in the mists for help with literally no response. I tend to do my best to help these guys understand the basics, but that ain’t enough in the long run.
What also seriously need to stop is the constant downgrading of players. If someone is getting roflstomped there’s a good chance that they will be told that they suck and they should get back to PvE. Those who say that are usually those who complain about PvP having few players.. Instead of do this they could instead offer tips or assistanse so that the new player can learn and enjoy PvP as much as we do.
There are a huge blame on ANet for having bad leaderboards (someone with under 15 matches was no 1 in eu for a few days….) and bad matchmaking. They should add two more queues, both solo and team, but not ranked and with hidden mmr. This would make it a perfect practice arena for new players and veterans to really try out tactics without hurting their score.

dunno, i made it up. it’s just that it coming from me is not much of a lofty quote.
They actually should make proper match up scalling like:
- people that have Glory level between 1~5 are in the same queue
- people that have Glory level of 30+ are in the same queue
Problem is when someone creates a class he’s playing for the first time.
Should be put in 10+ queue range, but that system may be abused with creating/deleting chars of the same class to keep it in same queue range.
Would need a script which realize that if I have a Necromancer with Glory level of 30+ then a baby necro I’ll make, will end in glory level 30+ etc etc.
As an experienced pvp player, the main issue is the leaderboard. I’m playing every day, having as many wins as loses, and i always end up with -30/40 ranks, because wins are giving +10 ranks and loses are giving -50 ranks ( even when it’s solo team queue against top premade..)
Meanwhile, there are players with 2 wins and 18 loses on top200. This isn’t entertaining at all.
There should be more competitive events in-game, such as daily tournaments or specific unique rewards on team queue as an example.

You can beat a dead horse and make it look alive.
but once rigor mortis sets in eventually even that stops working and even the slowest on looker can figure it out.
Gw2 sPvP arrived Still born, got some attempted Jump starts about 4 to 6 months way too late (as per typical Anet style when it comes to Gw2).
We’re now in the Rigor Mortis Stage, even tournaments aren’t going to mask it very well anymore :\
Different match types that play better off of the combat and speed/spam of the game would be more fun to play and maybe even watch…
“Gw2, It’s still on the Table!” – Anet
VeeWee is gone, there’s no reason to play GW2 anymore.
Unequal match-ups are a big part of the problem, I’ll agree. I basically only stick to Hotjoin, but even there I see lots of Autobalance Wars, 4v5’s and team stacking. Everybody wants to win (because there are actual rewards tied to it), so nobody is willing to join the losing team.
You can’t get rid of rewards entirely (or the population will just flat out leave), so the best way to level the playing field is to increase the incentive for being on the losing team (probably through equalising of rewards for wins and losses in Hotjoin, making victory played simply for pride and achievements).
Do yourself a favour and find another game for pvp. Most players have left to play other games and now the only seemingly fun thing left is teamq because of the awful matchmaking and leaderboard system for soloq but even then good teams are so rare.
at some point i wish the EU and NA PvP forums were separated, so i know what the OPs are talking about.
i had an alt parked on BG some time, pvp in NA seems surely a lot more dead and horribly matched than in EU, then again, i recently get roflstomped by cheesemode etc. a lot.

There is a huge need for deathmach 2v2/3v3 arenas. Conquest should be 10vs10/15vs15 on bigger maps, preferably with 5 nodes. I would recommend redesigning existing maps to be bigger, instead of creating a brand new set. Also, add some achievements rewarded with titles which are not about flat exp accumulation.
Creating new game modes will split the community (what is avoided by devs like fire), but it is going to increase total sPvP population, what is essential for it to survive.
Yes – It is dead.
After WTS, I don’t think they’ll even support sPvP anymore. They’ll probably even remove it eventually. It would probably be for the best if they did that and focus on WvW or PvE which still has some sort of life.

Apart from a few good teams doing e sports , which theyre only playing for the cash cos the game actually blows , whats happening to make spvp viable for normal players ?
How is PvP not viable for normal players?

4v5 , people had enough , no in game ladders , no progression , same game format , should i carry on ?
Its been on life support for a long time , there is an spvp patch coming , it will either be great or switch off life support n wait for a new pvp game , good luck

A lack of these things (and the inclusion of others) doesn’t mean that it isn’t viable for normal players. As a normal player, I am not too concerned with progression/ladders/ranks/etc. I play because I find it fun. Although I haven’t had much experience in a 4v5 situation as I generally play team pvp, not solo q.
As far as progression, I found it to have good progression, thats what the dungeon tracks are for. The more I play, the more rewards I get.
Basically it’s not so much as pvp isn’t for normal players, it’s that if you are concerned about such things, then I wouldn’t classify you as a normal player.

it’d probably set our minds at ease if they’d atleast fix the team swap exploit in hotjoin,
its been bought up repeatedly for months, there is no way Anet don’t know about it,
it is ruining every single match, it is turning away new and old player alike.
the fact that it is getting ignored while pve exploits get hotfixed within a week is extremely disheartening,
spvp might not be dead to us, the players,
but it certainly seems to be to Anet.
there is an spvp patch coming , it will either be great or switch off life support
Isn’t this what we basically say every time there’s a patch on the way?
I’ve completely given up on hotjoin and solo q. Team q at least almost always has 5v5 matches from the start, and even when I lose, I very rarely get completely roflstomped like I can in the unbalanced mess that is hotjoin.

thats true for most of the game tbh, what you said there in the beginning, about the combat system. its the reason a lot of wvw people played. the combat system in this game is absolutely amazing and fluid. tbh, if you honestly think about it, the reason most people play this game, despite what part, is because of things that have already been there since launch. spvp/wvw/dungeons. other than that its like a completely different team has been working on the game post-launch.
It would be nice if they could attract the pve crowd into spvp.
A few things throw people off:
Hotjoin is not fun. The autobalancer is broken and people stack teams. Its an intolerable pvp environment.
The rewards are quite decent now but not on par with other areas of the game. Not earning Karma is a real stickler for lots of people. Especially those working on an legendary weapon.
The maps are confusing to new players and objectives are not clear.
You get bad runs of people leaving and 4v5 are never fun for either side.
Similary bad mixes of classes, one team being all class X and an other being class Y.
The preset builds given to people are bad and if you are not sure what is going on they do not help you compete.
Unfriendly map chat in the game and the lobby.
I am not sure what the answers are to each of these. But I can offer a couple suggestions.
Hotjoin: Remove spectator mode and let the computer sort the new player automatically into the weaker or imbalanced side. Return of 8v8 perhaps?
Rewards: Wins and losses in Arnea give Karma.
Confusing: Not sure if you can combat a learning curve to pvp.
4v5: I am ready button that works. Replace the missing player automatically.
Imbalanced Teams: simple computer algorithm really
Preset builds: Easy fix. Give each noob player a meta-build that is pretty tanky.
Unfriendly map chat: Remove map chat inside the match. Team chat yes. Map chat no. This would help a little. Award positive contribution points – in LOL you can give people a vote as a good team mate and stuff, have it tie into actual rewards, this positive reinforcement would promote better behaviour.

This hit the nail on the head. A few weeks before this last patch I had gotten my wife all hyped up to play after 2 years of pestering her. She played PvE for a little while to learn her character and then began playing hotjoins, soloQ, etc. After two weeks of trying she quit with utter frustration. kitten happens soo fast it was hard for her to learn what to dodge / watch for, etc. The thing she was great at was being in the right places capping, helping team fights..For her the skill cap to learn wasn’t worth the frustration. Point blank it wasn’t fun. This was also before they removed rank viewing in spectate and she had to face team stacking. I do agree a progressive system would encourage newer players to stick it out and as a result the population will grow.
5k Hours Played over last 1.1k days – “I love this game”
seems that as of the last few months and even with the patch recently, the numbers i see in hotjoin and the que times i have are so much worse. there are like 100 people in hotjoin sometimes, let alone my stupidly long ques for solo que. 400 people watching tol 2 a month or so ago? ded game? whats going on gais.
Game isnt dead.
the players that want to try out pvp are by and large being scared off by general intolerance/stupidity and are in wvw/karmatrain/pve.
PVP is choking on its own toxicity.
