need an excuse to use mortar
fire field + 100% projectile finisher is a lot of burns if you’re a good shot. i use it in wvw on my p/p condi FT build.

Here’s your reasons to use mortar kit:
1) Prevent stomping interruption. Drop mortar 4 (blind field) on downed opponents before stomping or before an ally stomps to prevent from landing. The pulse of the field makes it better than the single blind from your grenade kit.
2) Counter rampage/Lich forms. Admittedly, the Moa from Elixir X is more ideal for this, but the blind field from mortar 4 is great for countering these skills.
3) Poison downed enemies. While your grenades can poison, your grenade 5 also hits pretty hard, so having the mortar kit means you can use grenade 5 offensively, while keeping the poison field available for once an enemy goes down.
4) Extra heal. Blast the water field from mortar 5 for an extra heal when your primary heal is on cooldown.
5) Remove conditions. Mortar 4 can also be used for a condi cleanse since it’s a light field. Mortar 1 is a 100% projectile finisher, which works well with this. Throw Wrench also is 100% projectile finisher.
6) Chill eles. Chill is a particularly effective skill against elementalists since it messes with their attunement cooldowns. Because of this, you should make sure to utilize mortar 3 on eles. After you’ve dropped the field, continue spamming it with mortar 1 for additional chill duration.
7) Early start on DPS. Finally, the mortar is also great for allowing you to drop in some DPS when you’re running to assist in a team fight. The extra range will allow you to help a team fight before you’re able to reach with anything else.
Oh yea…this also all before you consider the extra blast(s) from Orbital Strike.

Hey, new to the game and pvp. Enjoying a condi mechanic build more than anything so i think i’ll stick with it, but I can’t find an excuse to use mortar when having grenades out is just so much more effective. I love the range and the gas bombs really useful but it just doesn’t offer enough.
Any viable mechanic builds that use morter?

I like runing elite mortar on my engi for the utility, not for damage, and it is fairly effective. I have it traited for extended field duration and double orbital strike. Rest of my build is FT + pistol/pistol with focus on burn.
Water field from mortar + duble tap orbital strike on your team while in mid fight on a cap point is a beautiful thing and you can use it from 1500 range.
Flamethrower 4 + double tap orbital strike = a lot of wide area damage with some nice might stacks for you and your team.
the chill field is 2nd most useful when slowing down opponents trying to run away.
At max range, you can outlast and out play rangers using just mortar 1 and mortar 2 on the condi build. They will either retreat or die if they’re dumb and stand there long enough.
You can also start firing it at 1500 range as you are closing in to join in a fight to support your team mates, then switch weapons when close enough, this is really nice too and I do it quite often and it is effective.

i agree on everything except this.
It does not work well, just because it’s a bit bugged currently.
By the idea you need to shoot target in melee range to remove condis through lifhgt field projectile, but on practice it doesn’t works always (tested it 2 weeks ago) so during the actual combat it can mess you up more then help
