hello all

i was falling asleep and i had to get up to write this idea down.
i was thinking about solo queue, and the problems that face it. about wanting to shut down hotjoin, and how it would affect players. here is my idea:

  1. shut down hot join
  2. add a ranked solo queue
  3. add a ladder/visible rating for it (separate from premade, which should be locked at 5 player to enter)

so far, nothing new. a rated solo queue qould vastly improve new player experience. hotjoin is a poor introduction to gw2 pvp. although there might be some problems for players who want to play hotjoin and not worry about their rating. so then we would have to consider adding an unrated solo queue. but then we have to split already limited population again. so it’s not good.

here is the idea then:
1 solo queue, you can enter as ranked or unranked.
if you enter as ranked, everything works as you would expect.
if you enter as unranked, your rating is not affected, but you also recieve no rewards for winning.

2 kinds of ppl want to play unranked in my experience:

  1. those that want to test a new profession or whatever
  2. those that want to have easy time. maybe farming noobs.

the reason there is no reward at all for playing unranked, is that i know very well people want to farm noobs all day long for easy glory if they could. so i can imagine someone making a new acct, and playing unranked from the very beginning. so he never gains any rating, and stay playing noobs all the time. if he has no way to get any rewards, it is nearly pointless for him to play. the person who is testing builds out will probably not mind so much — after all he is only interested in testing a new build.

conclusion:
ranked solo queue would raise player satisfaction, and by removing hotjoin you instantly have a large population to make an mmr rating system work. entering unranked caters to “edge case” players without splitting playerbase.

discussion:

  • do you think this is a good idea?
  • what problems would this introduce that we did not have already?
  • is no reward for winning too harsh? what else could be done
  • should players that enter as unranked be playing at their regular rating level? or reduced?

sounds great for solos, but what happens to the people that only have a team of 2-4. or what if you want to play with another one of your friends. If they add a solo queue like this then there’s no reason for them to team up with anyone unless they have a full team. I can see this working if the population was larger but atm there’s just not enough people to make it happen.

I honestly don’t see solo queues as being the answer. The real issue to me, since these most recent changes to the queue scheme, seems to be the obscuring of competitive and casual games and thus the intermingling of competitive and casual players. Paids were initially an answer to this because not only did it require a team in order to queue, but the rewards were structured appropriately as well – providing a natural boundary between competitive and casual games. Currently there is almost zero difference in rewards between the 2-team single match queue and 8-team tournament queue – hence why no one is queuing for 8-team tournaments (well that and the new map holds some additional appeal by merely being new content). If they’d simply restructure the rewards to offer the greater rewards for tournaments than the 2-team matches and keep the full-team queuing requirement (not all barriers to entry are bad for a “team game”) we’ll see the casual and competitive player bases diversified again, and thusly less premades stomping pugs.

As well, ANet can change the queuing scheme all they like but it won’t make any difference until a visible ladder is made available. The biggest thing missing to me since these most recent changes is the utter lack of satisfaction from winning a match. Unlike the paid queues, I have no idea how invested the other team is, if at all, nor where the matches rate competitively. Have I moved up the rankings? Have I moved down? I have no idea, and thus I hardly care if I win or lose, and ultimately it’s becoming painfully boring with a distinct care-bear feel.

ANet: please, find a way to make tournaments relevant again. please, find better incentives for competitive play. and please, for the love of god, find a way to rotate the maps for single matches – the new map is cool and all but variety is king.

I don’t understand why “Battleground” and solo que can’t live side by side. I don’t see a downside to it. If im playing alone I like to solo que and do BG’s in the meantime cuz ques take awhile anyway

But I agree the need of getting a REASON to play. PvP Players like: Tittles, rankings, Hard to get Top lvl gear(looks). It’s all about kitten.

They took our gems. Which was actually even something. Now we’re getting crappy chests that we’ve gotten few times… I don’t even wanna freaking open them. I have hundreds of chests lying around. U know how much work to salvage them all? 1 chest turns into ~5 items and 100 chest turns into 1000 clicks due to multiple clicks required.

I would like to atleast have second option for a chest which would contain DYES/GLORY BOOSTERS/FINISHERS as second option(after tourny is finished) than gear i’ve received hundreds of times. I would also like to see return of gems. Don’t see how it would fit in 1 rank tourny though… Would destroy anets gem economy. I liked the gem system how it used to be. Atleast those who experienced high lvl of tpvp received something extra.

It’s so simple aswell. Copy paste working solutions from popular games(LoL for example) and tweak them in. Not that hard apart from time it takes to code & test dat.

People get bored fast. It’s better to have lots of stuff(that atleast work) than 1 that’s working flawlessly.
