1). What game mode should I play? I noticed a ‘solo queue’ mode that has 1-2 minutes waiting time, so I chose ‘Play now’ or ‘join now’. The result was I lost 10/10, in most of them we were ‘farmed’ at the exit of the safe point by the other team. It was always hopeless and only part of if was me, since I’m new.

2). One time when we were close to winning a guy in the other team left and a message to switch appeared. My goal is points / rank xp / TREASURE! Should I switch or not?

3). Often even if I always click ‘random team’ at the start of the game, I was matched against the previous enemy team. A few times I quit at the end of the game and re-joined, but still got farmed. How does this work?

What you were playing is called HotJoin, where you are matched with random people, and theres always r80 farming others :p

Play unranked arenas, there you have a mathcmaking system

Play unranked queue. A couple of minutes queue time is kind of annoying, sure, but it’ll lead to much better and more even games. You say you want the rewards, which are much better in the queues, with faster reward track and rank progress and no restrictions on how much progress you can make each day. There’s no random/team switch in them, and you shouldn’t be matched against the same people all the time which will solve a lot of your problems.

Honestly, if you know what most of the buttons do and aren’t trying to play with your feet or something, you’re good enough to queue, so don’t worry too much about not knowing exactly how to play, since a lot of it is practice and experience. There’s NPCs in Heart of the Mists to practice against while you wait for the queue, so you can at least get the basics of your build.

‘Play now’ / ‘join now’ puts you in hot joins, which are full of people who stack on the same team to crush the enemy team, and other people who abuse the ‘switch now’ by leaving the losing team, forcing a re-balance, and spamming the team swap button to get on the winning team as the re-balance happens.

You are much better off playing unranked and waiting in the queue for a few minutes.

The best thing you can do to learn the PvP scene is:

1) Play a few games of “Play Now” formally known as “Practice” formally known long time ago as “Hot Join”

2) Once you feel comfortable with how Conquest works (Capture ABC) and you feel comfortable with your class, you should move to Unranked. With Unranked, there is not an ability to switch teams. With Unranked, you start to see how the competitive scene really is and should have a better understanding of Conquest.

3) If you feel very confident, you should move over to Ranked, with ranked you are playing against mostly premeds and the largest difference between ranked and unranked is that a few maps are removed from rotation. I would suggest entering ranked with a team of your own and only after you feel comfortable with your class.

Best way to learn your class or the game mode, is to enter play now and just spectate and see how other people are playing then dive in. I would suggest spectating someone of your class and see how they play.

There are numerous websites and streams that offer builds and helpful hints on how to improve your play.

Remember, as with any game, you will have toxic players that will rage and take things too seriously, try not to take this to heart… just ignore them and continue to have fun.

Side Note:
With new players, we really should start calling things by there current terms to prevent confusion for new players. E.g. new players will probably have no clue what Hot Join is.
